Bbc I player or tonight 10 40pm bbc one.

It's nothing original or amazing. But I'm enjoying it.
Romantic comedy drama basically.
Set in 2012.. which isn't exactly long ago.

OP posts:

I didn't get a 2012 vibe; as others have commented, it felt way more current. It felt a bit forced, the fun with a capital F. I got a weird "Men Behaving Badly" sense from it, that I don't recognise from my female friendships/flat-shares, and the same with some of the dialogue - but maybe that's how female yoofs acted/talked in 2012 and/or now 🤷🏻‍♀️

mewkins · 11/06/2022 00:37

I finished it tonight and really enjoyed the whole thing. It's clearly left open for another series. I think the Maggie/Birdie friendship was spot on.

mowly77 · 11/06/2022 05:33

Birdie was amazing in The Morning Show is my takeaway

Yamyam13 · 11/06/2022 05:45

I'm one episode in and concur with everyone that it sometimes feels too current, language clothing, decor & small details wise.. but only by a few years.
And sometimes I find the script and acting a little cringey, but I often get that with British/London set shows about 'youth' being really 'real' ! Anyone else? I found the delivery of some lines from I May Destroy You similarly made me cringe a bit too.
Maybe because I'm a born and bred Londoner and it's a bit too close to home?

Yamyam13 · 11/06/2022 05:46

But I am overall enjoying it, and some of it is spot on. I read the book and enjoyed.

EBearhug · 11/06/2022 08:55

I finished it last night. I agree that it seemed slightly too current, the ending was a bit disappointing and clearly leaving it open for the next series. Also, my experience of flat shares was never so spacious and nicely decorated, especially not in London.

sleepyhoglet · 11/06/2022 10:59

Ugh I don't get Street at all. Complete turn off

JaneJeffer · 11/06/2022 14:20

He reminds me of Blake Fielder-Civil

Mooserp · 11/06/2022 15:36

He reminded me of Adam Ant.

I don't see how they could afford to rent that house.

EarthSight · 11/06/2022 18:02

Does anyone else feel a bit confused regarding the show's time? It's supposed to be set in 2021, but the fashion and some of the interiors look more like 2004-ish.

@Mooserp I guess they are all very middle class? No one I knew would be able to afford a house like that. The hall itself was the size of someone's bedroom and in rented accommodation everything would have been white and very plain.

@Yamyam13 It was a mixture of current (90s revival hairstyle in one scene) and fashion & interiors that mostly looked like 2004, especially in the end episode, What she was wearing there was typical of mid 2000s.

Also, why did they bathe so much of it in orange light & filters? Again, it was meant to be 2012, not the 1970s!! Millennial pinks would have been more fitting.

@sleepyhoglet He is an odious character, but then again, I suppose that's point? I guess the character enjoys abusive, negging men?

EarthSight · 11/06/2022 18:13

@toastedcat

It comes across like the design team was very, very young on this show and so they would not have such a keen eye of what was 2012 and what wasn't. Not sure if they were going for accuracy, but if they were, they certainly didn't achieve it. Some of the fashion was incredibly 2005, not 2012.

SwedishEdith · 11/06/2022 18:15

It’s ok, I thought it might be one of those things I turn off in disgust after 20 minutes, but I’ve somehow found myself halfway through episode two without really knowing how I got here 🤷‍♀️

Same. Some was filmed in Manchester though, I recognised King Street/Deansgate.

DH said this! I thought he was like Super Hans from Peep Show. He was a total prick anyhow.

Moanranger · 11/06/2022 22:58

I enjoyed it, but I don’t think it really gets the tone of early 20s singletons, flat sharing, partying, drugs, drink, random boys that I remember. Oh, we had all that, but an awful lot of angst. Just a bit too jolly & madcap.
To me, it’s a time of life where you are still discovering who you are, and who to trust/not trust. Not a time I would like to revisit.
But as escapist entertainment it is fine.

JoanWilderbeast · 12/06/2022 18:28

Street had a slight look of Dean Gaffney, to me anyway lol.

😆

I've watched it all now, enjoyed it the more it went on. Would definitely watch another series of it.

Does make me feel old and boring though

Crinkle77 · 12/06/2022 21:35

YetAnotherNam · 08/06/2022 15:08

I’m also enjoying it but find Maggie unbearable.

Oh god yeah she's so annoying and they all seem quite immature for 24 year old. More like 14 year old. Do 24 year old really make up dance routines to pop songs and roll down hills?

Faircastle · 14/06/2022 17:05

I'm watching the first episode now; it's OK, but not sure if I'll keep watching.

I shared a house with friends in London in my early twenties, and my boyfriend (now DH) lived in Camden, so I thought it might resonate and be fun to watch in a nostalgic way.

I think maybe the target audience is 15 years younger than I am.

EachandEveryone · 07/06/2022 23:10

i enjoyed listening to the book even though Im thirty years too old 😃 i will give it ago and hope it better than Conversations with friends.

Oh yes conversations with friends was truly dire and seemed to go on and on. I don't normally give up on something but I couldn't waste anymore time

Rollergirl11 · 11/06/2022 19:40

I thought Blake Fielder Civil as soon as he appeared (had to look his name up, but I thought, ‘that druggie-looking scruffy bloke who Amy Winehouse married’).

I really like it, unexpectedly. Thought I’d hate it. I don’t. Even the Maggie character is endearing despite being super annoying. The writers had some fun with the script, having the TV exec producer describe Maggie’s interview outfit as ‘Anita Pallenberg drag act’.

EBearhug · 14/06/2022 18:09

conversations with friends was truly dire and seemed to go on and on.

I preferred Conversations With Friends, but I did wonder a) does Sally Rooney write anything other than Irish students shagging? and b) why is the BBC making such similar programmes at the same time, young women discovering sex?

TabbyKat87 · 14/06/2022 18:18

I much preferred it to conversations with friends. That was just to try hard for me, and just boring.

Whereas I found this quite an enjoyable, easy watch! Some experience of a friendship similar to birdy and Maggies, so found that fascinating to watch.

100% didn't feel like it was set in 2012. The language, and decor etc just felt a bit too current.

Ended quite abruptly i thought!
