Best (non-comedy) TV shows of all time

Having just finished Season 3 of "Succession" I feel bereft and looking to find something good to watch.

"Succession" is the best thing I have seen on TV probably ever, but equally great I found
"Breaking Bad" (first 4 seasons); and
"Ozark".

Are there any other shows out there that can rival those three in brilliance of script, acting and twists? Looking for inspiration.

Agree with Breaking Bad. Also Game of Thrones, especially seasons 1-4. Even including the awful last season, the average episode ratings 8.8 out of 10 on IMDB, and various episodes on 9.9 or 9.8 which is pretty unusual.

hockeygrass · 09/04/2022 21:07

Better call Saul is very good and probably has 1 more series not aired yet.

Ozark is amazing you and I think back soon with last 7 episodes.

Sometimes I wish I still had Breaking Bad to watch....

The Americans was a brilliant show, up there with all those mentioned above but didn't get nearly enough recognition.

Our Friends in the North is on Britbox. It's still extraordinary.

The West Wing

Horridcreature · 09/04/2022 21:12

Factual- the David Attenborough wildlife documentaries are hard to beat

Not sure if classed as comedy - talking heads, both original and lockdown re makes

duvetdayforeveryone · 09/04/2022 21:14

I enjoyed Gilded Age on Now TV entertainment or Sky TV. It is similar to Downton Abbey.

Tothepoint99 · 09/04/2022 21:14

Making a Murderer...although it's been out a while now. Binge worthy though.

TCMolly · 09/04/2022 21:14

Ozark, Line of Duty, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Better Call Saul, Walking Dead, Dark, House of Cards, Mind Hunter.

grannyjacob · 09/04/2022 21:15

The Sopranos, The West Wing, the sadly cut off far too early Deadwood, Oz (apart from the very last episode).

kjv1234 · 09/04/2022 21:16

I absolutely loved Blindspot.

loopylindi · 09/04/2022 21:17

Sopranos, Homeland, Any David Attenborough series

Succession is a league of its own I think, it’s a seminal tv show, like Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones. Also would add The Wire.

But if you’re looking at historically important TV, it’s Cathy Come Home, Up the Junction, Abigail’s Party, Brideshead Revisited and, well, Coronation Street.

Comedycook · 09/04/2022 21:18

The Crown

Faffandahalf · 09/04/2022 21:20

The Americans is amazing. Seriously amazing and yet didn’t get the full recognition it deserves. No one really talks about it. It did get a couple of emmy awards (or just the one?) but the leads were astounding and the plot full of twists and turns. Great period setting (80’s US) and themes of patriotism, loyalty, family, deceit, identity, religion. It had it all!

Faffandahalf · 09/04/2022 21:22

Ooh someone mentioned Oz. Deeply disturbing show set in US prison. As bleak as bleak gets with some pretty black humour.
Also not talked about much anymore but amazingly well acted if you can stomach some of the graphic scenes. You find yourself rooting for some real psychopaths at times!

The Americans, every then. It’s excellent.

Every time not every then!

Yep agree with The Wire as seminal, but also seminal and historically important - The Americans Smile

It’s on Disney Plus.

It was me that said Oz, I love it, got the box-set, watch it every couple of years. Fabulous characters and acting, and still have to shut my eyes at certain bits 😀

Tezza1 · 09/04/2022 21:31

"I, Claudius" 1970s, about the machinations of the Julio-Claudians based on Robert Graves' novel, and told from the perspective of the Emperor Claudius, played by Derek Jacobi. Fabulous cast – even a young Patrick Stewart with hair, terrific acting and clever, witty writing.

Summersdreaming · 09/04/2022 21:34

Succession is on my list. Agree with breaking bad. Sounds like I need to rewatch The Americans and finish it.

Handmaid's Tale.

WellTidy · 09/04/2022 21:35

The Bridge (scandi, subtitles) is fantastic.
