Katie Price: What Harvey Did Next BBC1 7th March 2022

This documentary followed Katie Price’s son Harvey making the transition to a full time residential college (National Star provides specialist further education and residential services for people with physical and learning disabilities/brain injuries). Harvey has been diagnosed with Septo-optic Dysplasia, as well as autism and Prader-Willi syndrome, which means that he requires constant care.

I don’t usually like to see people’s private moments documented on tv when they may not be able to give informed consent. However, putting the ethics to one side for a moment, I did find this documentary very insightful. I feel like it gave a realistic and quite respectful depiction of Harvey’s issues and the conflicting emotions that parents go through in ‘letting go’ of a child with complex needs. The staff who work at these residential colleges are wonderful at supporting these young adults and no doubt get little recognition for it.

Did anyone else see it and find it insightful?

Not watched it but very uncomfortable with the idea for the reason you stated -

//// Too often this sort of thing is done under the guise of raising awareness, using platforms for good, increasing understanding, etc. I'm not sure how much of this is ever really achieved. What is guaranteed though is it keeps KP on tv, relevant and provides ££ for her. I think her energy could at times be better used really being present in her kids lives for them and just them.

That aside I'm sure that the topic and conditions it covers are in themselves interesting.

Villagewaspbyke · 08/03/2022 14:57

I agree with @tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz - Harvey can give informed consent and shouldn’t be subjected to this.

DaffodilDandilion · 08/03/2022 14:58

I saw the advert and decided it wasn’t something I was comfortable watching due to the reasons given above

SoupDragon · 08/03/2022 15:05

I've not seen this one but I watched the one before this and it was very respectfully done and gave a huge insight into the struggles he and his family face.

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 08/03/2022 15:06

Katie price uses her children to generate income. Harvey is no different.

forlornlorna · 08/03/2022 15:14

I watched this one. I watched as I'm parent to a child with significant medical problems and ASD. This programme really helped me. Seeing there's places/colleges like this was very reassuring and seeing how the staff were, and how they dealt with and cared for Harvey was very helpful for me as I start navigating my child's future.

I'm no Katie price and and purely watched as it's a toad I may go down soon.

Bit unfair to knock the programme without watching it. I don't think it was intrusive.

Samcro · 08/03/2022 16:20

@forlornlorna i didn't watch it. but assume they showed Star college. just wanted to say its a brilliant college. my dc went there and it was the making of them.

forlornlorna · 08/03/2022 16:35

@Samcro yes it's star college! I was so impressed!

Margot78 · 08/03/2022 16:48

I didn’t think it needed to cover her drink driving incident though. By including it in a documentary about Harvey it could lead to people drawing incorrect conclusions about what caused her to do it. I also felt I shouldn’t be watching her terminally ill mum getting upset about the crash. It felt intrusive. However, I feel that overall it will have done some good if it educates people about disabilities and the impact of them on families.

if you want to watch a show about star college, I would recommend the unbreakable"s

this show covered disability really well.

I would really recommend it, its like university for disabled young people.

Anyfeckinusername · 08/03/2022 17:02

I thought it was excellent.

Harvey is really so very loved my his mum. None of them are an island, they affect each other, it seemed fair to call out what mum is going though too. The staff are so good. And hearing about his friend and the chats caught with his friend, and her parents is so insightful. It is really worth watching.

Musicalmaestro · 08/03/2022 19:20

I thought it was done well and with respect.

purpleme12 · 08/03/2022 19:42

Actually I thought it was an amazing programme/documentary
Way better than the first one

In the first one we didn't truly see his difficulties/how difficult he could be
This time we saw the good and the bad times
And we saw how they dealt with it all
It was just as fascinating and really useful and insightful to watch how they all dealt with his issues actually

I really appreciated watching it.

I'm now watching the documentary... Ds2 went away to residential school when he was seven. When the school and college closed down I did think about looking at National Star for him but his life took a different path and he's now living independently....

Howeverdoyouneedme · 08/03/2022 22:05

I thought it was really well done. The bit about the drink driving wasn’t necessary, but I thought it allowed people who aren’t familiar with people who have SEND an important insight.

CallmeHendricks · 08/03/2022 22:46

"I have nothing but admiration for Katie Price as a mother - to all of her children, who all seem lovely and well balanced"

The younger four children all live full-time with their fathers (for the last few years) and she rarely sees them nowadays, particularly since the recent issues with her current fiance.

Rupertgrintismyguiltypleasure · 08/03/2022 23:14

I’ve always followed Harvey’s story but since my son was diagnosed with autism 4 years ago and is getting diagnosed with adhd, I’ve been particularly interested In Harvey’s college progress. DS struggles with school, he struggles with new things, I see very big similarities between him and Harvey and it actually made me think how we will both manage when the time comes to go into higher education. My DS has no where near the same other medical needs and is slightly more independent in terms of certain life skills, but he wouldn’t entertain new people as easily as Harvey does. It’s been very interesting and I hope they do another one in the future.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 09/03/2022 08:12

I thought it was sensitively done and KPs love for Harvey shines through, she’s great with him. And what an amazing place that college is!

Clymene · 09/03/2022 08:14

Her children should be taken into care. If she weren't famous they would be. She's an absolute disgrace

steppemum · 09/03/2022 08:16

I am not a Katie Price fan, and haven't watched any of her stuff, but I turned on this and actually thought it was very well done.

It was respectful of Harvey and showed the college in a really good way.

The interview with the parents of the girl who is Harvey's friend was also very good. What a lovely family.

There are a few amazing places around.

A friend of ours lives in a community on a farm. They have house groups of about 8 with live in 'house parents' and then they all work in different places, eg looking after animals, working in the kitchen, they eat together in the main building etc.

Loads going on, drama and trips out and so in. Fantastic place. he must be about 45 now and has lived there for more than 20 years

ItsaMeanOldScene · 09/03/2022 08:23

I thought the first documentary was good as you saw the struggles people have in getting appropriate care for their DC. It was good to have a follow up and was interesting to see Star College. However this time it seemed more about Katie than Harvey. I would imagine very heavily edited to hopefully protect Harvey. The transition would be hard - it looked very smooth.

purpleme12 · 09/03/2022 08:43

I thought it was more about Harvey actually
And I thought it was more balanced showing the real side and struggles of it cos you saw the good and the bad things about him
