Zelenskyy in Servant of the People - C4 tonight

Seemslikeagoodidea · 06/03/2022 21:58

People might be interested to know that tonight, at 10.35pm, Channel 4 is showing the comedy drama series "Servant of the People", which is the series where Zelenskyy plays a teacher who accidentally becomes the President. C4 has certainly timed this well as there is so much interest in Z right now.

I will be watching to learn more about this interesting man, while having uncomfortable thoughts that the reality of Z's current situation is definitely no cause for laughter. I wonder if the series will change perceptions of Z in any way?

Have set sky to record

HollowTalk · 06/03/2022 22:08

He came across incredibly well didn't he? Putin on the other hand…

mum2jakie · 06/03/2022 22:11

Brill. Thanks for this. Have set Sky Plus

Seemslikeagoodidea · 06/03/2022 22:30

@HollowTalk Yes, he does come across very well. Being an actor probably helped him to develop his communication skills, and he seems very at ease in front of a camera. He previously trained as a lawyer, and in 2006 he won "Dancing With the Stars". It seems there's nothing he cannot do! Grin Next they'll probably tell us that he's also a qualified brain surgeon/rocket scientist and/or has invented the cure for cancer! 😀 (I really like him, I'm just amazed that one man has so many talents - it seems a bit unreal.)

He reminds me of Boris really…

Etinoxaurus · 06/03/2022 23:51

Watching it now. It’s fun but heartbreaking to think of what all the actors are doing now.

AlexaShutUp · 06/03/2022 23:58

Wish I'd seen this, will have to look on All 4.

Seemslikeagoodidea · 07/03/2022 00:37

Watching this was so surreal. Things I learned:

  1. Kyiv is a beautiful city
  2. Ukrainians are just as cynical about their politicans as we are.
  3. Zelenskyy is a bit shorter than I realised, but he looks hot in a suit and he sure can act.
  4. Ukrainian humour seems similar to ours.
  5. The writers took some clever swipes at other world leaders.

It is all so weird, this art reflecting life which then reflects art again.

Well, they are both comedians, I'll give you that. But only one is a strong world leader who has earned the respect of his country's citizens...
Seemslikeagoodidea · 07/03/2022 19:16

@mum2jakie Indeed. I wonder what made Zelenskyy decide to actually run for President, after playing this comedy role... did he think that he couldn't do a worse job than some of the corrupt politicians he'd observed? Or was it a sort of protest/tongue in cheek thing, that ended up with its own unstoppable momentum? Very interesting man. He has said that he will not run for a second term, so I wonder what he will turn to next (should he survive this war, which sadly is not guaranteed).

Things I have learnt about Zelensky:

  1. He is very corrupted, has close connection with Ukrainian billionaires who of course fleet Ukraine.
  2. He put his opposition to jail as soon as he won elections
  3. He didn't want to Ukraine to stay neutral. He had a little push from the USA to provoke putin.
  4. He doesn't understand that Ukraine, Russia and other Eastern Europian countries could be united. As we are mostly all od Slavs.
  5. He plays nicely to western propaganda.

Things I have learned about Zelensky

He is a good actor
Right now he is the bravest man in the world. I don't give a fuck where his money is

When he is murdered by the Russians I'm sure the cash will be of little comfort to his family

I'm sure that he does understand that Ukraine, Russia and other Eastern European countries could be united, but I assume that he also recognises that lots of Ukrainians (and indeed other Eastern European countries) don't want to be aligned with Russia. Frankly, there are lots of Russians who don't want to be aligned with Putin's Russia at the moment.

But you go on spouting your pro Russian propaganda.

One more for your list: he's also the Ukrainian voice of Paddington.

As opposed to Putin propaganda?

Are you Russian or just pro-Russian/Putin?

TheOnlyMrsMac · 08/03/2022 23:48

provoke Putin
You think Putin is raging war against Ukraine and committing war crimes because somebody provoked him? Oh dear.

I feel the same way. If Kyiv is bombarded heavily by the Russians (which it might well be, when the Ukrainians refuse to surrender the town and/or abandon it), Z will undoubtedly be the number 1 target. If he is killed it will be such a blow to the Ukrainians, and of course to his family and friends. I'm sure he's not perfect and I'm not saying his life is worth more than anybody else's, but he has become such a symbol of their struggle that I'd fully understand it if he leaves Kyiv ahead of the main assault, even though his instinct is to stay and fight.
