Just before I start there is a thread for watching at tv pace, this one may contain spolers.

So I’m on episode 4, wtf is actually going on?
She’s moved in with the dead (is she dead? Surely her nhs health records would have shown she was and so Sasha/Becky wouldn’t have been able to get her contraceptive injection?) husband, please can someone just pm me with how this all ends?!
I feel it’s going to be very uncomfortable viewing when it all inevitably unravels for her.

@HipHipPuree

What/whose was that huge country pile where Livia conducted her PR strategy meetings/arsey 'Shut up! No! Shut up!' phone calls? Was that Nish's? Or office space?
I assumed that was managed office space. There's one similar near me, it was an old big fairly posh house when it was built, it's been converted to offices (rented).

@BoreOfWhabylon

I couldn't work out quite what she did at the end, sharing the recording of Elliot's raging. Was that a recording made whe he had her by the throat or a call he'd made to Chloe? was clearly sent to all of Chloe's contacts and Olivia said Elliot was now in a lot of trouble.

So she'd outed him as a violent abuser at the very least. But how had she done it?

My take on it is that Becky had got access to Chloe's phone when she used Elliot's fingerprint when he was asleep (obviously, Elliot would have his own fingerprint access to Chloe's phone because he was a controlling creep). So she then had access to Chloe's insta page on Chloe's phone (lucky that Chloe had obviously had set it to non-password protected access on her phone).

She then posted the video of Elliot ranting on Chloe's insta page. (Seems she had kept Chloe's phone and taken it with her?) so the post seemed to be an eerie message from beyond the grave from Chloe, which would attract a lot of attention (as opposed to posting it on her own social media). Thus outing Elliot as not the gentle pillar of the community as previously presented.

Hellosunshiner · 16/02/2022 14:06

Motnight agree with the loose ends re Becky's mum - the 5K would only last 2 weeks in the nice care home. They'd given up the tenancy on their flat. Becky was living in (whose?) caravan, which wasn't hers. Thinking about it, it is probably Chloe's parents' caravan? Seems it would be their kind of thing. But the longer term plan... her mum still needed care facilities... And still, why did Livia go to the caravan at the end? Even if they'd been there before, it was obviously out of the way for her and she came and left without any particular reason, and was surprised to see Becky there, so it wasn't as though she was expecting to confront Becky.

But anyway, like her mum said to her, follow through was never Becky's strong point, so I guess Becky would have dodged on the care home bills for a couple of weeks, in which time she would have wangled some other job or loan or something. Maybe Livia would have paid up the money she owed Becky and/or continued to employ her. Also, didn't Elliot give Becky a lump sum of money when he heard Livia hadn't paid her? So she would have that as well.

Hellosunshiner · 16/02/2022 14:15

Ooh - perhaps she reset Chloe's social media password so she could access it on her own phone. I think I remember seeing that. So she wouldn't need Chloe's actual phone.

MrsSiba · 16/02/2022 14:55

Great summary

I agree, Becky and Chloe loved each other completely for who they actually were.

MrsSiba · 16/02/2022 14:57

That was agreeing with @planningtomakeaplan

Quote didn't work for some reason

BoreOfWhabylon · 16/02/2022 15:08

Thanks @Hellosunshiner. So was the recording of Elliot ranting a message he'd left earlier for Chloe or did Becky somehow record him when he had her (Becky) by the throat?

HipHipPuree · 16/02/2022 16:59

@BoreOfWhabylon

Didn't Becky press something on the phone while she was hiding in the wardrobe, so all that conversation they had in the kitchen was recorded?

I agree that Livia turning up at the caravan doesn't really make sense, other than for convenience - when Becky said, (IIRC) 'How did you find it?', Livia said, 'The same way as you did', so... what? By finding a random key with 28 on it? How did she know how Becky had found the key? How often had Livia been there? Were they even talking about the caravan? And what was the significance of Chloe's birth certificate? The camera lingered on it every time.

Pretty amazing right-on-the-sea-front view though.

I did wonder if Becky might end up trapped with Elliot because he was paying for her mother's care home, or doing some kind of cold-eyed deal in return for her silence.

BoreOfWhabylon · 16/02/2022 17:01

Oh I missed that!

HipHipPuree · 16/02/2022 17:12

I feel as if I missed quite a few key details too! Mainly because of the on-screen mumbling and DH asking 'Do people actually wear that?' and 'What's happening now?' and 'Who are these two young girls again?' every ten minutes.

MrsSiba · 16/02/2022 18:10

@HipHipPuree yes, the outfits!

What was Liv wearing at her husband's art exhibition?! Looked like a court jester. Other stuff was gorgeous like Sasha's green and black dress.

Hellosunshiner · 16/02/2022 18:56

HipHipPuree I watched with subtitles on for most of it due to on-screen mumbling, and also the dream scenes etc which were hard to keep track of! Somehow, if I've been able to read what's being said (ie subtitles) the confusing scenes make more sense!

IvyTwines · 17/02/2022 09:48

@IceandIndigo I think the reason she went back to the house was to record proof of Elliot's behaviour. It's a thriller based around social media, so in the end that's what she uses to expose him. Realistically, there would be little chance of getting enough evidence to actually arrest or convict Elliot, but social media exposure will at least show the world what he is. There's a similar plot device in an Agatha Christie, where a young woman riskily goes back to her stepfather's house because he's a pillar of the community and it's the only way to 'out' him as a killer.

On the care home point, Becky has proved that she is every bit as capable of operating in the well paid, middle class jobs world as those born into it. She's bright and talented and grows in strength and self-confidence through the series. There are hints that she may go to London, or stay in contact with Livia, so be able to earn enough to support her mum.

Needdoughnuts · 17/02/2022 11:21

Yes I don't understand the certificate and the practising of Elliot's signature. Liv turning up at the caravan was a bit odd. Also Liv's character was so undefined and wishy-washy. Thinking about the whole group, there was no one actually likeable apart from the girlfriend at the dinner party.

Loved Becky's ability to morph into whatever personality was needed. Reminded me of Villanelle in Killing Eve.

HipHipPuree · 17/02/2022 11:27

I think the practising of Elliot's signature was to explain the £5000 that had been sneakily withdrawn by Chloe - her running away money cash in the box*, and also the reason Nish tipped Elliot off, when he saw the withdrawal and texted Elliot to alert him. (I think he texted 'is that Chloe?' or something.)

  • is that right?

She'd have to walk into a spectacularly high earning job (in the arts too, it seems Hmm) because a care home like that will cost around 52k pa, so she'd have to be clearing 75k pa after tax (about £125k pa) just to stay for free in that caravan and wear ebay cast offs.

Didn't she withdraw 5K from the joint account (or Elliot's account?) I thought the signature practice was linked to that. She got outed by Elliot's friend who alerted him to the fact Chloe had withdrawn 5K. (Becky found a message on the phone).
Needdoughnuts · 17/02/2022 12:24

Ah I see. I'd forgotten about the money withdrawal. Got a bit confused towards the end!

Needdoughnuts · 17/02/2022 12:27

The cost of that care home will be in excess of 1500 a week if my own experience is anything to go by. That lovely room with garden access and lounge area looked lovely. Lucky mum!

I know ,that was truly ridiculous. I really hate things like that, it obviously isn't a documentary but things like that are laughable!!

I don't think she went back to the house specifically to confront Elliot. If that was the reason then why did she hide in the wardrobe when she heard him (and seemed genuinely terrified he would find her)? And then she tried to sneak out of the house without him seeing her? I think she only decided to confront him when she realised he had locked the front door from the inside, and she didn't really have any choice.

Yes, the practicing of the signature was so that she could fake a cheque for the £5000 - when Becky went into the cabin there was a cheque book there as well and she saw it recorded on the stub. Which in itself is sort of incongruous, does anyone actually use cheques these days? I didn't really understand the purpose of the blank birth certificate, perhaps it was so she could create a new identity and Elliot wouldn't be able to find her?

It looked a lot like the club where they did yoga, I couldn't work out if it was supposed to be the same place and Livia was able to use it as a workspace?
lazymum99 · 17/02/2022 14:11

Becky recording Eliot abusing her was similar to the recent drama where she went back to her house and her husband tried to strangle her under the CCTV by the front door. Can't remember its name. But when you watch so many of these they all morph into one ghastly scenario of abusive men!

NeedWineNow · 17/02/2022 14:17

Well I finished it on the train going home last night. An intriguing story and I liked the premise ie, living your life on social media - not everything is as glossy as it seems.

Erin Doherty was extremely good I thought, especially how she seemed to glide into the 'glossy' persona.

I couldn't get over how dark it was (the filming not necessarily the story). Trying to watch it on my tablet on the train, and the screen was so dark I felt like I was sometimes just listening to a podcast!

I'm glad this thread seems to have cleared up a few loose ends for me - for instance I was really confused about the money until I read about her withdrawing the cash.

All in all it wasn't the best thing I've ever seen, due to the loose ends, but it certainly wasn't the worse.

HipHipPuree · 17/02/2022 14:32

I sometimes wonder with these head-scratching endings whether there were a couple of scenes that got cut in favour of some arty flashback wankery which would explain everything much more clearly. And then when the producers view the final edit and realise there are some wildly flapping loose ends, they have to insert a hastily-written 'Livia turns up at the caravan' type scene with whichever actors were still available.
