I felt so sad for The Queen - it is the first time I have felt she is genuinely much more frail now and she was very open about the loss of Prince Phillip and how missed he is. I felt many people will relate to her message this year.

I don't normally watch the Queen's Speech and I'm not normally an emotional person but listening to her talking about Prince Philip brought a tear or two to my eye.

I also felt emotional watching the kite flying away to find Mary Poppins later. I had to confess to my sister because she thought I had a cold.

NOTANUM · 25/12/2021 19:15

@ArblemarzipanTFruitcake

handing over the baton etc.

I wondered if this was sowing a seed for Charles to take on most of her duties, perhaps after her jubilee has passed.

I wondered the same.

There was a sense of it becoming too much and continuity being very important.

Geamhradh · 25/12/2021 19:20

She looked very thin and her voice sounded different. Not the emotion- the actual mechanics of speech. I've noticed it in very elderly people, not exactly slurring the words, but definitely hesitation and slowing down as she was reading the autocue.
To be expected at that age, she is definitely looking and sounding very very frail.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 25/12/2021 19:23

Loved her comment about the tunes of hymns.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 25/12/2021 19:23

Carols.

SunshineCake1 · 25/12/2021 19:25

I thought she looked like she had lost a lot of weight Sad.

I know we have to but I can't quite grasp that we have to get used to the idea that we probably won't have her until she's over 100. DH thinks a couple more years at most. Thinking of sending him to the Tower.

BeLessMe · 25/12/2021 19:29

I’ve never watched before but really felt I wanted to watch today. It was quite moving, I really feel for her after losing Philip.
She has lost quite a bit of weight but she looked well.

ArblemarzipanTFruitcake · 25/12/2021 19:34

I also felt emotional watching the kite flying away to find Mary Poppins later. I had to confess to my sister because she thought I had a cold.

I watched that - didn't have high expectations but actually I enjoyed it. Loved the cameo from Dick Van Dyke.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 25/12/2021 19:51

I always watch her.

And this year I cried. She sometimes makes me feel emotional but this year my heart aches for her. She looked like my nan did. Tiny little and frail. And frail is a word I could never imagine using to describe either woman. She is the same age my Nan would have been, give or take four months. A world apart but similar in so many ways.

I knew this speech would address the loss of Prince Philip and it was as sad but loving as I thought it might be.

And yes, some were conspicuous by their absence. But given that the montage was about the Institution, then for me that was fine.

It shouldn’t be about those who do damage to her life’s work through their actions or those who don’t want to be part of it.

It was just poignant and fitting.

And I too loved the bit about the tunes of hymns!

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 25/12/2021 19:54

Aye - carols!!!! You put me on the wonk jay 🤣

MrsWooster · 25/12/2021 20:03

I actually teared up a bit. I’m officially a republican but the Queen has done /is doing a lifetime of duty and looked thin and frailer than before.

SpanielsAreMyLife · 25/12/2021 20:05

I sadly think that could be her last Christmas broadcast. Losing Phillip has well and truly aged her 10 years, sadly very common in long term traditional marriages. It made my eyes well up at one point.

Her dress was very poorly fitted, which is something I can't ever remember seeing. It was far too big around her neck and shoulders.

PiesNotGuys · 25/12/2021 20:07

She dropped her Hs

It was very noticeable and a big departure from her usual accent and inflection.

It was sad, I’m not a royalist but she has my respect.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 25/12/2021 20:21

She wasn’t really the same. Very tiny frame now. Her dress was gaping at the neck.

I’ll miss her. She is definitely fading away. Normally you see a sparkle, but it’s not there.

Toddlerteaplease · 25/12/2021 20:22

She looked fine. The lip syncing was off though.

AshLane · 25/12/2021 20:22

Yes, her dress was.

Can I even say his about the Queen ( maybe in a whisper) ....I think she needed a well fitting bra...🤭

Toddlerteaplease · 25/12/2021 20:24

She's made of stern stuff. She'll be around for a while yet.

SoupDragon · 25/12/2021 20:24

I thought she looked fine. Yes, she's lost weight but she is naturally small anyway (in her youth). She was ill recently too.

As for losing her sparkle - she's lost her husband! Who can blame her for being a little flat?

Bluntness100 · 25/12/2021 20:30

I was taken aback this year too, she’s lost a lot of weight, and she seemed either sad or unwell. There was none of her usual in control tone. I don’t know but I said to my daughter this isn’t quite normal, something isn’t right.

She is really old though, we forget she’s 95. It’s astonishing she’s as capable as she is.

diddl · 25/12/2021 20:36

I thought it sounded quite flat as if she was just reading it with no interest in what she was saying.

That said, it was probably a way of being able to get through it.

I lost my remaining parent this year, just a few weeks before PP died & still find it hard to say much without bursting into tears or my voice breaking.

TenoringBehind · 25/12/2021 20:42

I think she looks very unwell. It’s all in the eyes.

When she talked about the events due to take place next year I thought that she’s unlikely to be here for them. Very sad.

rc22 · 25/12/2021 20:51

I don't have children and get a bit upset when people say Christmas is for children or imply it's meaningless if you don't have children to share it with so it meant a lot to me when she said the special thing about Christmas was that it appeals to the child in all of us. Thanks HM!!

wheresmyhairytoe · 25/12/2021 21:00

We thought she looked very frail and like the background was green screened.

MrsHGWells · 25/12/2021 21:06

The Queen definitely has slipped a little this year. Not sure when the video was recorded, but normally well tailored clothes were ill fitting and her years are catching up. Her consort should be pulled up (the poor fitting dress & undergarments). I have a lot of sympathy & forgiveness however I feel her time to step back is drawing near to enjoy her family more.

LlamaParma · 25/12/2021 21:16

Absolutely exquisite from HMQ as always and very, very sincere words. Brought a tear to my eye - to have a first Christmas after the death of a loved one is a very profound feeling of sadness and loneliness. And she captured that wonderfully without making it about her. She is setting a bar so high I worry for the RF when she goes
