Just watched episode 7 of this series. Can't explain how much this has got in my head for some reason. I know it's a dramatisation. Is there an alternate point of view?

I can't believe the utter moral depravity of the sackler family, and Purdue pharma execs. I'm sure it's not isolated to that pharma company either but not getting into big pharma conspiracy land.

Just horrific how far reaching and devastating the opioid crisis is in the US (and presumably other non European countries?)

I've just watched episode 6 and I'm shocked at the corporate greed. Richard is a psychopath.

Teaandcakeordeath83 · 15/12/2021 22:21

This is an excellent documentary on it... m.imdb.com/title/tt14055432/

Also last week with John Oliver does some excellent sections on Purdue and the Sacklers.

JacquelineCarlyle · 16/12/2021 07:53

They're disgusting- it really is a hard watch as the complete destruction and devastation was known and ignored all so they could make even more money!

boogiewithasuitcase · 16/12/2021 13:09

Where are you watching it? I can't find it on Netflix.

crypticandsober · 16/12/2021 14:41

@boogiewithasuitcase I'm watching it in Disney plus. Not sure if it available elsewhere sorry.

Thanks for the other links, will check them out.

The outcome of the legal proceedings is available to read online.

I think Dopesick is a very generous depiction of the people responsible considering what they did and how they have continued to abuse their power to get away with the money they made from destroying lives.

Porridgeislife · 16/12/2021 14:47

I read Dopesick about a year ago. It’s absolutely horrifying and I’m not sure the TV series (on my to do list) could actually make it more dramatic.

So many people with stable, normal lives who ended up with life altering addictions due to being given handfuls of opioids after routine surgery and even c-sections.

Just watched episode 7. I was elated at the end of the last one where Bridget thought she’d nailed them. It feels like there’s a lock of reckoning to happen in the final episode.

I’m watching them gain from the start with my son. We’ve just finished episode 3 where Dr Finnix is given oxy after his car accident. It’s just too sad.

That Craig W bloke from the FDA who wrote the label should be forced to walk everywhere with a woman ringing a bell declaiming “shame!” Like in GoT

HermioneWeasley · 16/12/2021 21:03

Curtis Wright, not Craig

StylishMummy · 16/12/2021 21:23

So glad people are finally discussing this - we're on episode 5 & the opening of the funeral scene when the little boy talks about his mum taking oxy Sad
It's absolutely horrific as a drama, and more shocking that it's all true

LynnInAVan · 16/12/2021 21:27

Betsys mum tho 💔

colouringindoors · 16/12/2021 21:33

I've just finished Ep7. Betsy's mum's voice was so realistic.

It's an excellent series. Totally agree about Richard being a psychopath. The devastation and pain caused by OxyContin is utterly horrific 😪😪😪

NameChangeinHaste · 16/12/2021 21:44

I’ve been watching this and it’s so shocking. It’s the idea of
Thoroughly “normal” people, who trusted their doctors, being given medication that would ruin their entire life.
Made me very thankful that Oxy never found it’s way over to this side of the pond.

Nospringchickendipper · 18/12/2021 09:42

I’m enjoying this series but it is depressing to watch It shocks me the greed of the Sacklers family and Purdue. They ruined peoples life and all they were bothered about was the sales figures and making more money.

Berthatydfil · 18/12/2021 09:45

Judge rules Sacklers can be sued over OxyContin scandal

My worry is that the level of greed we see is fairly normal in big business. If you look at the food industry and some of the ultraprocessed food that isn't really food that is making so many people obese and sick there are similarities I think.

Do we know if the characters are real or composite characters?

Berthatydfil · 18/12/2021 14:26

The documentary The Crime of the Century is on sky

HermioneWeasley · 18/12/2021 16:56

@Berthatydfil that’s excellent news. I hope they’re left penniless as a warning on corporate greed, they killed half a million Americans

I'm so pleased it never came here. Why didn't it though? Luck? Or we have better regulations?

Thanks for this
Teaandcakeordeath83 · 18/12/2021 21:55

It is a prescription drug over here. It's typically px for end of life care as a morphine alternative. It is a known drug problem here but not on the scale seen in the states. You see in the series that some oxy addicts are priced out of oxy and end up on heroin- heroin here tends to be more accessible than oxy due to our healthcare set up. That said you can buy it prescription free on the dark web like most things.

I think theres a few reasons it didn't explode here like it did in the states is the regulations. Cultural- UK doctors don't tend to px opiates if they can avoid it. Regulatory- we have the MHRA and were part of the EMA at the release of oxy which probably shielded us. Sales wise we don't have the same sales techniques /perks/ benefits to incentivise doctors to prescribe certain drugs- I've been in pharma sales rep meetings on wards (usually new dressings for wound care...) and you get a free pen/ hand gel holder and a handful of chocolate if you're lucky. 😂 No paid trips to Florida ... In the series Sackler is desperate to get into Germany as they had the strictest pharma rega in Europe- had they managed it it may have been a completely different story.

succession · 19/12/2021 19:45

The documentary is even more jaw dropping

notapineapple · 19/12/2021 19:51

I'm loving the show, think the acting is really good and so emotive. When Finnix comes out of rehab and you see him on the floor I was literally in tears.
