New thread.

NO SPOILERS

Its really disheartening to come onto this thread after watching the show this morning (I work Saturdays so can't watch live) and see so much bashing of Tilly.

She can't help who her family are or that her dad obviously helped kick start her career but why is everyone so determined to kick her down for being young and inoffensive? The same happened to HRVY, Masie, Saffron, Joe Sugg etc it's like people think that younger/social media stars don't "deserve" their stardom or place on the show, but just because a celeb isn't from a specific demographic doesn't mean they should be denigrated for their participation. I didn't know a lot of this series' celebs (or I knew their faces but not really anything about them) but the fact that Tilly and Rhys are in it drew my preteen daughter into watching - in previous years she has had a passing interest in the sparkly dresses and flashy dances but hasn't wanted to watch the whole thing as she didn't know any of the celebs but this year she has actively asked about watching it as she knows Tilly and Rhys from watching CBBC and so has someone to follow and support. If younger stars get younger/wider audiences in that should be encouraged.

Tilly hasn't been a drama school diva or bratty celeb child, she has been a perfectly down to earth young lady who has taken every challenge and criticism thrown at her with grace and more decorum than some far more "professional" people have.

She also can't help the scores that the judges gave her. I loved her performance (despite being unsure at the start of the week when I saw the song choice) and it was very much a decent Musical Theatre style performance that fit to the music, the song and the musical it came from. It is meant to be stompy and some of the choreography elements were very similar to the actual choreography from Revolting Children and I think a lot of the people complaining about it haven't seen the show so can't compare and therefore are judging it as a standalone.

Was it a 40 dance? I think that it was - Tilly danced all of the steps she was given, followed the choreography she was given, made no mistakes, threw herself into it and gave a great performance... if you can't get 40 for doing that then when can you? None of the judges could come up with any criticism in their feedback so why shouldn't she get 40? The fact that other people didn't get 40s for other dances on other weeks isn't Tilly's fault and she shouldn't be held back because of that.

SmellyOldOwls · 21/11/2021 13:13

@TomelettewithGreggs

I can't express in mere words how much I hated Tilly and Nikita's dance. Sorry but I do not want to look at Nikita in unfllattering shorts. How did that get more than AJ and Kai's Charleston for god's sake?

I thought Rhys was actually good.

Annoyingly you'll probably have to watch it again later tonight Grin
SmellyOldOwls · 21/11/2021 13:18

@Claymorekick

Been thinking about it and I much preferred Tilly's halloween cha cha cha in terms of quality/character etc and that didn't get 40 Hmm

Reading on another forum and suddenly realised it is probably true - a good pro will deliberately dance down so they are a similar level to their celebs so as not to highlight the differences so if Shirley couldn't tell the difference between Tilly and Nikita, then Nikita was actually doing a good job but it came across as plain insulting Confused

Final thought - if, as expected, we are heading towards a Rose and AJ finale, the conversations in Gio and Kai's house will be interesting Grin

Nikita's face said it all really, I would have been a bit hurt if I was Tilly, he should have laughed and agreed Confused

mydogisthebest · 21/11/2021 13:19

@melj1213 I don't think there is that much bashing of Tilly.

Lots of posters don't think her dance was worth 40 but that's not bashing her is it?

That is purely down to the judges and their biased, for whatever reason, judging. No there was no criticism from them but it would have looked even more stupid to criticise and then give full marks. Mind you Cynthia mentioned Rose's mistake but still marked it 10! Surely a 10 should be for an absolutely perfect dance?

I can't stand Gordon Ramsey but Tilly can't help having him for a dad. She seems normal and down to earth. She has done some very good dances but last night was not her best.

TomelettewithGreggs · 21/11/2021 13:20

In re the "bashing" of Tilly, I don''t really care about her personality, which seems fine as far as anyone can tell from a scripted show. I only care about the dancing, and to me she is very heavyfooted and clompy in most dances.

For the same reason, I don't hate Tom ( though I wouldn't want to go out for a drink with him ever.

Tabbacus · 21/11/2021 13:26

Tillys a double- famous parent and a young woman, of course she was always going to be judged more harshly.

EvilRingahBitch · 21/11/2021 13:30

I think there is quite a lot of Gordon-bashing. I can see that it's annoying to have him keep cropping up if you don't like him, but it is unfair on Tilly who seems nice enough and is obviously working hard to improve her dancing. TBH any contestant whose fame is mostly derived from their connection to someone more famous normally gets a rough ride on here and DS.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 21/11/2021 13:33

I didn’t care for Tilly’s dance - that is not to say that I dislike her or her family though.

It just wasn’t for me.

I agree that it was meant to look stompy/disgruntled kid-ish but it has to stand alone to an extent because not everyone watches every musical. And I thought she did well with what it was.

For me, and I’m a squaddie two step kinda girl, it has to look absolutely incredible for a 40. It didn’t give me the wows but I can see why a lot of folk might like it.

As I’ve said, the outfits have been iffy and I blame the fact they looked like the gru hoofers on the costumes mainly. I know they have necks.

It isn’t a campaign against Tilly in my eyes at all. For me, she has done better before.

I like to feel when I watch a dance. When you watched Oti and Danny Mac do the samba it blew your socks off. It was thrilling.

But I loved Judi and Graz’s Get Busy just the same. Technically it was not the same of course but it made me want to wobble my fat and it gave me joy.

It has to have everything for a 40 and that includes the ‘feels’. I had an appreciation for the CC but no feels. 🤷‍♀️

Piggywaspushed · 21/11/2021 13:34

I agree melj although, on a side note, am surprised that children watch TV these days! I remember BP heyday when we allwatched telly!

I think some people's dislike of Gordon is clouding their judgement of Tilly.

I take your point about the other SM stars who have been somewhat vilified on here. However, I would add that I don't think HRVY got anything like the level of criticism.

Strictly has long been a programme which has promoted the profiles of BBC employees or people looking to move on from sport into presenting or stage work. It's not new and I am not sure why some are in such a lather about it. I am not sure where Tilly's career goes from here. All the bitching seems to be about the use of Tilly to promote her father's BBC profile.

I still didn't like the dance, though!

SequinsandStiIettos · 21/11/2021 13:38

From the seven partnerships remaining there's been criticism of
Dan - for being overbearing and preachy
Johannes - for being ostentatious and emotional
Rhys - for being frenetic and stage-school
Tilly - for being privileged and favoured
Tom - for being bland and smug

Only AJ and Rose haven't come in for a lot of flak, even then AJ was considered a loudmouth when she first started.

Dan, Tilly and Tom seem to have had the most reactions on here - I assume they are marmite/seen to have outstayed their welcome but there does seem to be more robust opinion than in previous series where we had Why do they keep saving Mike Bushell and Why does Seann have two ns? Wink Grin

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 21/11/2021 13:42

Aye - that one didn’t even need a ‘k’ - nnob sufficed…

SequinsandStiIettos · 21/11/2021 13:43

AJ, John and Rose

(the lack of criticism of these three might mean finalist. I do hope so as they have all provided dances I have re-watched).

Ellmau · 21/11/2021 13:46

Its really disheartening to come onto this thread after watching the show this morning (I work Saturdays so can't watch live) and see so much bashing of Tilly.

I haven't seen any "bashing" of Tilly personally - just of this week's dance which many, including me, thought dreadful. A few have said they liked it.

Phineyj · 21/11/2021 13:49

I have Covid so I might just alternate John and Johannes' pirate dance and rhumba all afternoon. Reasonable use of an afternoon, no?

Runningupthecurtains · 21/11/2021 13:50

It seems to be a Strictly thing to bring out extreme reactions - the whole elimination filmed on Saturday has loads of people fuming/frothing/raging and claiming that they are being lied to but A) it's an open secret B) it's done on loads of TV shows but I've never seen anyone fuming that they are sick of Countdown or Pointless lying to them when they do the yesterday/tomorrow thing when episode are filmed back to back with clothing changes for the contestants/ presenters and shuffling of the audience (if seen) to maintain the illusion.

Gooseysgirl · 21/11/2021 13:50

I've just watched Tilly's dance again... and I'm still baffled at the scoring. My kids could have done that dance.

SequinsandStiIettos · 21/11/2021 13:51

I liked it - but I liked all of them last night.
It has had 90k views though (you tube)
Rose 119k
Tilly 90k
Tom Rhys 37k
AJ 34k
John 33k
Dan 30k

SoupDragon · 21/11/2021 13:52

SoupDragon I think you might need to get a cardiac checkup, because I thought AJ's waltz tugged at my heartstrings like nobody's business.

Maybe you need an emotional health check up 😉 😂 I think it was maybe the music - just a bit too slow and therefore rather dreary.

SequinsandStiIettos · 21/11/2021 13:55

Yes - House of Games does the same - we're here all week, when a week is a day's back to back filming. Some even ad lib, like Clare Balding saying she had gone to the pub with Jamie Laing the night before Confused or Kev Clifton wearing his winner's fleece from 'yesterday'.

SequinsandStiIettos · 21/11/2021 13:58

My favourite musicals number not to have appeared in musicals week still robbed

All daily /weekly quiz/game shows do it. Obviously it would be a complete waste of time and energy to set up a studio for Pointless film one episode then kick everyone out and set up the studio for Impossible film one episode send everyone home set up for Only Connect one episode then House of Games and repeat the next day but I've never seen anyone moaning about it or claiming we are being treated like children but some the exact same device is a hideous unbearable lie when Strictly do it.

[quote bonfireheart]Usual hyperbole from this newspaper but you get the gist

From years ago. Doesn't mean it happens now and making trouble and insinuations for no good reasons imo.

OopNorfDahnSarf · 21/11/2021 15:02

This thread has cheered me up 😊
Mumsnet is more entertaining than the dancing this week.

I never understand why people are irritated by this either, and I don’t really think they’re trying to deceive the viewers anyway, they just refer to “last night” and “Saturday’s show” because that’s when the part they’re talking about was aired... same with other shows filmed back to back, the exception to this rule being X Factor, which actually was 2 shows, one on Saturday, results on Sunday.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 21/11/2021 15:49

For me its not so much that its an "unbearable lie" or anything. I just don't see there was anything wrong with the old 15 min show the same night, no dragging it out, no dance off no wheeling out Gimmer Pop Stars with a record, no Judge Twaddle, real potential for a shock exit, Bish Bash Bosh Done
