Do we usually publicly thank interpreters?
I think on Strictly they're so visible (I've not seen ITT but I'm thinking of the actual show) that it'd be nice if they were acknowledged. In fact am I right in saying that on the first show they were? Or one of the interpreters, at least, maybe the one who interprets the judges' comments?
It is not customary to thank or constantly acknowledge interpreters when they are working. They are there to do a job - to interpret for Rose as an adjustment for her disability. Just like a PA for a person using a wheelchair or a guide for a person with vision loss, they are just doing their job and don't need "praise" or thanks for doing so.
Therefore when someone talks to Rose, even though it is through the interpreter, they should be talking to her and not the interpreter. If they were constantly thanking and acknowledging the interpreter then it would be highlighting the adjustment needed for her disability.
Because they would occasionally be visible on screen in the Clauditorium (as it is such a small space), or would be off to the side of the judges (so it would be obvious that Rose was looking elsewhere when the judges/Tess were speaking to her) or on ITT when they are in the studio and it is obvious there is an extra person with Rylan/Janette then they wanted to address who that person was and why they were there and probably preempt the covid social distance complaints but once explained they have done the correct thing in letting the interpreter do her job without drawing attention to her.
