Anyone watching?
Really enjoying this, and I like how they are placing the music in context of current events at that time.

Love this. Smiths, Pixies, Prefab Sprout (remember them!). Quite liking the hip hop prog following too...

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 06/11/2021 21:34

Oh Jesus and Mary Chain…🖤

Going to see them in 2 weeks. Was always too scared when younger..

Jellykat · 06/11/2021 21:37

Did anyone have the Time Zone 'World of destruction' single? John Lydon / Africa Bambaataa..
So many different genres in the 80s, it was so fast moving, a brilliant music decade!

JellyKat - I had to look it up. Wow, there was some heavy stuff going on in the 80s.

ArseInTheCoopWindow - I'm with you - wonder what they'd be like now

Loving the hip hop too.

SayYouDontMind · 06/11/2021 21:42

It's a cut above those endless talking head recollection programmes. What I loved and lament is that real multicultural mix up of 2 tone and UB40 - people getting together to make music cos they were all pissed off and angry but creative and active. Less manufactured and self conscious than now. So much variety. Loved Jimmy Somerville's anger. And the Cocteau Twins and The Smith's and The Stone Roses and the joy of the Rock Steady crew. Lucky to have lived through such a creative era even though there was a load of rubbish too!

Attictroll · 06/11/2021 21:43

Enjoying it so much ... both the alternative one and now hip hop to house.even songs I didn't like at the time sound good now 😊

RobertSmithsHairbrush · 06/11/2021 21:43

"...it would go on to define the DNA of dance for the next 40 years" 😭 I feel so old.

SayYouDontMind · 06/11/2021 21:46

And to have featured Prefab Sprout too. Anyone else loved Lions in My Own Garden (sigh)

RobertSmithsHairbrush · 06/11/2021 21:50

Yes so much creatively and mixing of styles, cultures, beats...
Do you remember the uproar when bands first started using samples from other artists.

RobertSmithsHairbrush · 06/11/2021 21:50

Nenah! She's awesome.

Jellykat · 06/11/2021 22:00

Aw also got the De La Soul album 'Three feet high and rising'.. Grin

RobertSmithsHairbrush · 06/11/2021 22:07

Yep and soul 2 soul. Absolute classics!

Spiceup · 06/11/2021 22:10

Ooh I hope it's on Iplayer. I shall watch tomorrow evening.

I am horrified to realise that 80s now is way older than 60s (which were ancient) were was I was young. Grin

gettingolderbutcooler · 06/11/2021 22:13

Ooh we've been bum dancing on the sofa! Loving it!!

Jellykat · 06/11/2021 22:35

And just to round off the evening, Nick Cave on Jools Holland doing 'Red right hand', amazing...

Sparklingbrook · 06/11/2021 23:25

Sparklingbrook · 06/11/2021 23:37

Amillionnc · 07/11/2021 00:03

I just finished watching TOTP 1988 biggest hits - personally I think the best year ever! I love every song. Incredible Grin

KittenKong · 07/11/2021 00:06

Is too! However, Bros - really? And I don’t remember the Israeli singer at all.

Claymorekick · 07/11/2021 00:10

I just said that to my DC who were in the room whilst I was watching it - 1988 was my absolute peak pop music year and I swear I have never heard of that song or singer Hmm
KittenKong · 07/11/2021 00:14

We must’ve blocked it out...

absolutelynotfabulous · 07/11/2021 13:02

Haven't watched part 3 yet. 80s so varied musically. I loved the jazz/funk/soul of Sade and Shakatak particularly.

Also have a soft spot for Level 42 (went to see them the other night and they're still fab).

Feeling very old now - was a student in the early 80s.
