Just watched the program about Alison Hargreaves and her family.

Brilliant and gut wrenching.

Gosh I only managed half of it! With DC a similar age to Kate and Tom when their mother died I found it so difficult to watch!

I enjoy a mountain amble but I've never been able to understand the pull of real climbing of very high stakes peaks, particularly if you have children.

ssd · 27/09/2021 08:22

Im surprised more people didn't watch it. I found it brilliant.

It was sad wasn't it, the daughter is very broken. I felt rather sorry for Danieles family as he seemed to be getting blamed.

BikeRunSki · 27/09/2021 08:28

Is this about Alison Hargreaves the mountaineer? Brilliant woman.
I was heavily into climbing when she died, I remember this very clearly.

What channel was it on @ssd? I’d like to watch it.

GorgonzolaSouffle · 27/09/2021 08:29

I would like to watch this too.

BikeRunSki · 27/09/2021 08:31

Found it, The Last Mountain, BBC2 last night

BikeRunSki · 27/09/2021 08:31

@GorgonzolaSouffle bbc2, The Last Mountain

I remember when her death was reported, my mum saying how selfish she was, to take such risks when she had young children. I think she had a point.

i remember thinking that too. But then I read that she was desperate to leave her husband and was trying to earn enough sponsorship to make this happen. Don't know if it's true but it was reported somewhere.
trumpisagit · 27/09/2021 09:04

Also would the same be said of a man with small children who died climbing a mountain?
I don't think so.

Innovationstandard · 27/09/2021 09:40

It was a brilliant film, heartbreaking but wonderfully uplifting too. Loved it when she was reunited with Big Ibrahim x the Dad is quite a tough guy isn't he...

I'd say the same of any parent who puts their own lust for dangerous sport ahead of their duties as a parent. Once you have young children, stuff like that should get put on hold, regardless of gender. But I agree, far fewer men would be criticised for it.
MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 27/09/2021 09:46

Men often get away with behaviour that women are criticised for but I would judge a father equally harshly for needlessly risking their lives and potentially leaving their children without a parent.

HeartsAndClubs · 27/09/2021 09:48

Yes it was absolutely selfish, and I would say the same of a man. After all, often the man is the breadwinner so if he goes and does something which puts him at significant risk of death then there’s a good chance his family are going to suffer for it not only emotionally but financially.

ssd · 27/09/2021 10:34

The climbing seemed to be in their blood though.

I watched this, it was amazing but really brutal. I also remember Alison Hargreaves dying and, like @Toddlerteaplease's mum, my mother was very critical of her taking such risks when she had small children.

Tbh, watching the documentary, I think my mother was right - I would say the same about a father of small children. It is clear that both Alison's children were really badly affected by her death; Tom clearly took insane risks and it looked like Alison's death was a major contributor to this.

Toddlerteaplease · 27/09/2021 10:45

@trumpisagit yes, I think it would be Said.

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 27/09/2021 10:49

If you’re interested in knowing more about Alison, I can recommend this book.

I agree. Hargreaves was grotesquely irresponsible and selfish.

BUT I would also say exactly the same about a man who took such ridiculously extreme risks whole he was the father of young children.

IHateCoronavirus · 27/09/2021 11:11

I felt so sad at the end when the daughter was saying she felt she owed it to her mother and brother to be extra special. What a burden to carry Sad

ssd · 27/09/2021 11:13

I was glad to see her daughter getting a hug from her dad at the end. I couldn't really figure their relationship out.

In my experience men who injure themselves or die doing extreme sports are not criticised.
Women often give up or rein in their activities on having children (I did).
Men rarely do.

WhatDidISayAlan · 27/09/2021 11:58

Hi, I missed this and haven't seen any ads for it - please could someone post when it was on and on what channel so I can see if I can find it on catch-up? Thanks!

WhatDidISayAlan · 27/09/2021 11:58

Ah sorry - just seen it upthread - ignore me!

I know we can all post anything we want but i really didn't want this thread to be a big men v women thing. There's enough of that shit all over mn. I judt thought this program was so powerful and well done, with the correlation between the kids being young and growing up..the fact it was their mum who was an amazing climber was just part of it. The way the story is told from the daughters and sometimes her dads point of view is very heartbreaking.
