I recommend Geoffrey Wansell's book 'an evil love' I think it's called. Wansell had access to Fred West's diary/autobiography that he wrote in jail which is an interesting piece of work.

Gonnagetgoing · 17/09/2021 11:22

@Buggerthebotox

I agree with you.

Even if there's anything to be found, it's unlikely the Police are going to fund any searches when the perpetrator has been identified.

As for the outcome of the cafe investigation, that's old news. Interesting though, particularly the discovery of the blue pipe.

Agreed with you too!

Yeah, the cafe investigation outcome was old news so don't know why they rehashed it in this programme last night and night before? Was the blue pipe discovery a new one do you know?

So basically I'm not sure what these programmes were meant to bring up/why they were televised really.

Ah good call about the diary/autobiography.

As I stated in an earlier post on this thread though, I think more and more that the killings were a part of a satanic cult - e.g. Rose and Fred belonged to one etc. I didn't know e.g. that Fred West was a freemason until I read about this recently.

OP posts:
Gonnagetgoing · 17/09/2021 11:29

Ignore me re the satanic stuff - apparently just a conspiracy theory.

But apparently a few believe Rose's dad Bill Letts, Fred's brother John etc were probably involved together in a child abuse/murder ring for the women/girls involved.

I'm guessing they only investigated the cafe because CB waitressed there and FW was a known Client and apparently lived nearby at Cromwell St (although he may have actually been living at Midland Road at that point).

I suppose it's natural to link CB's disappearance and FW, especially if fuelled by conversations between FW and his appropriate adult.

So they search, find nothing much except something blue in a void - and hey presto there's a possible link between CB's coat/ handbag and the blue item in the void.

Except it's a pipe. Must've been disappointing all round, especially for the family.

BrilloPaddy · 17/09/2021 12:27

We live locally, and I thought the program was horrific. Imagine the sorts of idiots that will now start trying to dig fields up.........

It was sensationalist, not substantial and I'm surprised that Gloucestershire Constabulary even began to get involved in it. All that work in Gloucester, the poor cafe owners losing god knows how much business, and for a broken pipe. Horrendous.

My uncle was a bricklayer and he'd worked on quite a few sites with Fred West over the years. His opinion was that he'd had so many places to dispose of bodies over the years, you'd never find them all. He apparently worked somewhere with a large well, and was very fascinated by the depth of it.

There will never be an end to this story, and I don't think that show should have been broadcast.

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 17/09/2021 12:31

It took them two hours to tell us there was nothing buried in the cafe cellar, they weren't allowed access to the 'farm' and they'd referred the findings from the two fields to the police - so nothing, basically.

The police won't be interested in taking it further because Fred is dead and Rose has the maximum possible prison sentence.

I hope this false hope of new information didn't upset the families of missing people who might suspect their loved ones were victims of the Wests.

the80sweregreat · 17/09/2021 12:36

I'm surprised that Trevor McDonald put his name to this show. It told nobody anything really and will cause more heartache for those how have missing relatives and think that the West's may have been involved :(
It was reported a while back that they didn't find anything in the cafe basement.

Yes, I remember it being on the news when the cafe basement was being dug.

If there had been any more definite findings it would be on the news.

Trevor McDonald has done other programmes on the Wests - I assumed it was because he was at the height of his career in 1994 so would have reported on the case and have knowledge of it from then. He also lends respectability and gravitas to documentaries.

I agree with all you say here.

All this upset and harm happening and for what? Nothing to be found and the police aren't taking it further.

I do wonder why Trevor McDonald has got involved after all these years despite him having had knowledge etc if he knew it would probably lead nowhere and come across as being sensational.

Do you mean MB? Mary Bastholm?

I would lay my last tenner on Mary Bastholm being a victim. How awful for her parents and brother, all th I g before finding out what happened.

Spidey66 · 17/09/2021 13:03

Sorry there should be a dying in the last sentence. I broke my right arm yesterday and have to type just using my non dominant hand

ohthatbloodycat · 17/09/2021 13:10

I haven't seen this, and feel like the Wests have been done to death, so to speak.
Does this offer anything different and is it worth a watch?
Thanks.

Buggerthebotox · 17/09/2021 13:51

@Spidey66: apologies - yes - Mary.

Also surprised at TM being involved. The psychologist Dr Youngs was also on those bbc2 daytime programmes which investigated miscarriages of justice.

the80sweregreat · 17/09/2021 14:09

When they showed the map of where West had been working it was a huge area to cover. To visit all those places would be massive and they do not have the resources.

These days there is cctv to track cars etc and would have been harder for him to cover his tracks if they had been around back then
Back then it was a bit easier.
I'm surprised they haven't interrogated Rose a bit more ? Can they even do this ?

I don't think they can interrogate Rose if she refuses to answer. Which she has done over the years, stayed silent.

A bit like Hindley, Brady, etc, refused to answer questions where children's bodies were buried.

OP posts:
ArblemarchTFruitbat · 17/09/2021 17:51

When I decided to watch it, I thought it would be more along the lines of investigating the missing people who are possible victims - talking to their families about their last known movements and whether these coincided with the Wests' whereabouts.

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 17/09/2021 17:54

I agree there would be little point to questioning Rose further. What has she to gain by co-operating?

Myra Hindley assisted with the search for bodies on the moor because she had hopes of getting parole. Mercifully small though Hindley's chances of parole were, I think Rose West's are even smaller. As far as I know Rose West has no influential supporters.

Susannahmoody · 17/09/2021 18:01

Let's face it, if you started digging up most of the concrete in Britain you'd find bodies. Which isn't to say that you shouldn't, if you suspect foul play, such as in the areas Fred worked.

I guess that kind of investigation is very expensive to perform.

Ariela · 17/09/2021 18:09

@Gonnagetgoing
My fairly distant (but in touch with them) cousins live in Gloucestershire but they just said Forest of Dean is a bit of a strange place.

Urgh, me too! I went on holiday there and just couldn't feel 'right' the entire time, could never live there. Rest of Gloucestershire is just fine.

DoylyCarte · 17/09/2021 23:22

The Forest of Dean is like Deliverance 😅 beautiful scenery though.

I’m intrigued about the farm/barn. Wasn’t there a well in a field mentioned as well somewhere?

I guess not only would they know the perpetrators - already either dead or incarcerated, but they also don’t have any actual victims to start with that they’re searching for likely or suspected to be in those locations enough to get warrants.

So I guess this would create more work/questions if successfully undertaken (such as identifying the victims) rather than providing answers.

Personally I think there’s more but I guess for now it’s just a (likely) theory.
