The six-part drama from World Productions (Line Of Duty, The Pembrokeshire Murders, Save Me, Bodyguard) stars Suranne Jones, Rose Leslie, Shaun Evans, Martin Compston and Paterson Joseph.

When a crew member is found dead on board the Trident nuclear submarine HMS Vigil, police in Scotland are called in to investigate. The catch? The UK’s nuclear deterrent must remain unbroken, so the submarine stays on patrol and Detective Chief Inspector Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) must go aboard to begin an investigation. Although the death was written off as an accidental overdose, Amy suspects foul play. But when the crew close ranks in the face of Amy’s questioning, a new threat overshadows her inquiry.

Vigil
Vigil’s stellar ensemble cast also features Anjli Mohindra, Connor Swindells, Adam James, Gary Lewis, Stephen Dillane, Lolita Chakrabarti, Daniel Portman, Lorne MacFadyen and Lauren Lyle.

The fictional six-part series is written and created by Bafta nominated writer Tom Edge, with episodes by Ed Macdonald and Chandni Lakhani. It is directed by Bafta winner James Strong, and Bafta nominee Isabelle Sieb. Vigil is produced by Angie Daniell, executive produced by Simon Heath and Jake Lushington for World Productions, Gaynor Holmes for the BBC, James Strong and Tom Edge.

Vigil
Vigil is set and was filmed in Scotland, and is supported by the National Lottery through Screen Scotland. International distribution is handled by ITV Studios.

They keep referring to the air quality. How the o2 levels are lower than on land.

Ekofisk · 12/09/2021 22:14

@ImFree2doasiwant

The Cox'n?
I wondered if it was coxswain - looked like him but is that too obvious?

And was that custard or vomit around the cook? (I thought custard?)

I'd have thought they were kept to the minimum level that's safe to reduce the risk of fire oboard and to use as low of an amount as possible? Not sure, but seems likely something like that's the case, I suppose if the levels were tampered with it would cause issues!
TheRebelle · 12/09/2021 22:18

What I’m finding unrealistic is how abrupt she is with everyone and how no one seems to cut her any slack for being a civvy on a submarine, surely a police officer knows you catch more flies with honey than vinegar.

Haudyourwheesht · 12/09/2021 22:22

@Laaaaa

Why does MC have such a small part? Unless there are flashbacks to come

He was apparently just about to film LOD so didn't have much time. Slotted it in.

Graphista · 12/09/2021 22:24

Coming from a military background the whole premise from the beginning is not how it would happen in real life. The military have their own police forces including cid and a military police officer would have been put on the sub but would have then been liaising with the civilian police when they civilian girlfriend was killed.

But...dramatic licence and all that!

In addition the cook wouldn't have been serving on board while all that was going on with her son as she is too vulnerable to blackmail etc her vetting would have been suspended until that was resolved.

Affairs happen Alllllll the time! Huge problem within the military. The captain wouldn't have had trouble believing that at all but also probably wouldn't bat an eyelid.

The coxswain I felt was too nice at the beginning which made him suspicious in my mind. When the Russian spy stuff started I'll admit he was my first suspect as he's been too placatory towards Amy. He was trying too hard to get her on side while also keeping well in with the captain and the ex o.

Coxswain is supposed to tread a careful line between ratings and officers but he was a bit too good at it I think - but that may be a misdirect.

But I'm also thinking he's fair colouring which would tie in with being a Russian spy possibly

Any show about the military generally gets it very wrong! I've thoroughly enjoyed various shows based on the military experience but there are holes galore! I do kinda wish someone who actually KNOWS how the military works would write one.

I watched endeavour instead… doesn’t look like I missed any world changing plots. Will catch up tomorrow. I didn’t like 70% on land last week sounds like this is the same. You’ve build a sub set use it!

O2 levels might be depressed to mitigate against fire risk - you’d get headaches and be tired, so not ideal for crew expected to be ready for serious action.

Me too. 'Did you mean to be so rude, Amy?'

Even with the coxswain. So he was having an affair? Maybe that's not something he'd readily disclose. Surely she gets that?

Fordian · 12/09/2021 22:31

What's the music playing that they kiss to?

I low it but can't place it!

Fordian · 12/09/2021 22:32

Know, not low!

SpindleWhorl · 12/09/2021 22:36

According to another thread, Anchor by Novo Amor.

Fordian · 12/09/2021 22:38

Thanks.

Eurghh, curdled custard 🤢
ImFree2doasiwant · 12/09/2021 22:50

I was thinking she'd passed out in a custard induced sickness.

JanglyBeads · 12/09/2021 23:08

And what is her medication for - pain or depression? The captain referred to it as painkillers: was he just being tactful? The illness he mentioned, was that depression or something else?

JacquelineCarlyle · 12/09/2021 23:11

I really enjoyed tonight's episode - feels like a proper whodunnit!

queenjaneappro · 12/09/2021 23:13

I enjoyed it tonight. Haven't got a clue what's going on mind 🤦‍♀️

CocoHeart · 12/09/2021 23:53

Bang goes the theory that Rose Leslie is the little girl grown up....

JanglyBeads · 12/09/2021 23:59

There’ll be something which answers all the questions about the time devious relationship and the little girl, and possibly the on/off relationship with RL, revealed just as she’s about to die in the last episode!

JanglyBeads · 12/09/2021 23:59

*time devious = previous, obviously ....

Never understood diplomatic immunity either. If you killed someone or attempted murder why do they get off

Never understood diplomatic immunity either. If you killed someone or attempted murder why do they get off

It's an unwanted side effect from preventing the persecution and harassment of diplomats going about their proper duties. Because we want to know what is happening in hotspots round the world, and do not want our diplomats carted off to jail.

Diplomatic immunity can be waived, and for some countries it inevitably will. But others don't - look at US, as well as Russia and, in the case that put it in the headlines here, the murder of Yvonne Fletcher. It's also the reason why Julian Assange could hole up in an Embassy - governments, no matter how totalitarian/repressive cannot enter diplomatic premises without consent, and thus interfere with the work of another government

The chances of harm being committed by those with government protection are held to be low, and in for most countries, if the act was not part of your duties then immunity will be waived and you will stand trial. And the potential harm, if other countries decided to suppress diplomatic activities, is held to be much greater.

But in Vigil, he was a GRU officer, so likely acting in an official capacity, and no way will the Russians give him up.
