Every man on The Big Bang Theory was awful…

…and every woman who ended up with them could have done so much better.

Has there ever been another sitcom with such awful depiction of men?

@Notonthestairs

For a comedy to work you need a sane relatable character to act as a foil to the bonkers characters. The contrast is important because it gives the viewer an "in". So Leonard plays straight man to Sheldon, Penny plays straight woman to Leonard etc.

In a good ensemble they rotate characters as sane or bonkers depending on the situation (awful Howard understands why Bernadette hides in the Wendy house after work rather then come in to wrangle small children).

Friends did the same.

I suspect that it's generally the male characters that have the most unpleasant characteristics because there are more men are writing these sorts of long running comedies.

It is also why Miranda, Pulling, Fleabag etc were so brilliant and interesting.

So we need more women writing comedies.

I'm putting off packing to go on holiday, can you tell? Grin

I really enjoyed reading this.

Like a PP, I am a physics graduate with a physics PhD and there's some very recognisable character aspects in BBT from people I know! They are supposed to be caricatures I suppose. I think I might be Lesley Winkle...I think HIMYM men are worse though!

I don't necessarily agree with that, Lily was often pretty awful to Marshall and generally quite a controlling, Machiavellian character.

@SprayedWithDettol

But if they were paragons it would have (and any sit com would be) dull.

The whole point of comedy is to expose the human condition. We can do that in the most simple form by showing exaggerated characters and characteristics.

This in spades. I don’t think the point of any fictional character is to provide insight into perfect character traits - not sure what those would even be.

Howard was the worst of them all. Really really creepy and in the one episode where Penny calls him out for it, he sulks and all the others pressure her into apologising to him!!! It is outrageous.

How dare you say such things about the Big Bang theory
Those men are my hero's
I watch at least an episode in the morning before I head of to work and it makes me so happy and cheers me up
So disappointed in you guys for hating on Sheldon

Sisisimone · 07/12/2022 11:42

They're supposed to be awful, thats what makes it so funny. It's a comedy, not a documentary about 'well rounded males'.

PlasticTatMNBingo · 07/12/2022 12:04

Shit unfunny show for stupid people to laugh at smart people. It was an odd premise.
The writers clearly hate people with autism as well.

Needmorelego · 07/12/2022 12:13

Stuart was ok and seemed a nice bloke yet we (the viewer) were meant to find him a 'loser'.
I liked the relationship between Penny and Sheldon. Having now watched Young Sheldon I see the relationship is similar to Sheldon with his twin sister Missy.
They should have not bothered with Amy. Left Sheldon as asexual and basically him and Penny being total best friends despite being totally different. Leonard should have moved away and Penny and Sheldon live together as Odd Couple roommates.

oreo2020 · 07/12/2022 12:31

Oh I do love TBBT an so the characters.
All of them are quirky enough to actually be valuable to the show. With an exception of Leonard who kind of got cocky in the later seasons and mini-cheated on Penny; and Bernadette who became kind of a bully, and there wasn't any need for her squeaky voice too.

I'm smart and I enjoy it.
Sheldon isn't diagnosed, but I see no hate of Sheldon in the writing. They write him pretty sympathetically most of the time.

God I really hate this trend of analyzing a show using a modern lense. It wouldn't be funny if they were all perfect super guys, that was the whole point.
Also no one is perfect and while Howard started off a a creep he didn't end up that way. It was a great great show and so funny.
Its probably why none of the current shows are any good or funny.. trying to appease the professionally offended is impossible.
