Our Girl Thread 61 "Our Girl, Soldier Soldier and The Musketeers Revisited"

We started to follow "Our Girl" back in 2014 and although there will be no further series, we do revisit from time to time. We have watched all seven series of "Soldier Soldier" to keep up our military terminology and have almost finished the first series of "The Musketeers". Of course, there is a definite connection between "Our Girl" and "The Musketeers" in the delightful form of Luke Pasqualino. We will start on series 2 very soon.

Thanks ilove I actually got one about an hour ago. Earlier the only one on there was a Blue-ray. Left it for about an hour tried the site again and indeed there was the same site you are mentioning so I rapidly ordered one and it will arrive next Wednesday. Thanks again for trying to help

Hi all. There I was this morning sitting in a coffee shop with a friend and we were also chatting to the man on the next table. He reminded me of somebody but I was wracking my brains trying to think who it was. As we left the cafe, it dawned on me. It was Spanner from OG!

Magi84 · 09/10/2021 17:58

Oh ilove bet you couldn't believe it when you realised. I take it he has got rid of the beard otherwise that might have triggered a memory. I hear he is a really friendly guy.

Ilovelblue · 09/10/2021 19:04

This chap only reminded me of Spanner. Sorry to disappoint! It wasn't actually him unfortunately. Coffee Shop man had the hair and the beard.

I did wonder as I couldn't quite get why you didn't rush back there and pin him down with masses of questions. 😂

Rhubarb01 · 09/10/2021 22:56

Must admit ilove that I thought it really was Spanner sitting at the next table too. For a moment I had flashbacks to the Polish Cafe! But I can see now it was just a pesky look alike.

Just seen a trailer for Ben Aldridge's new series on ITV The Long Call. It looks like a prime time main role at last. Hope it's well received. Sounds interesting.

Ilovelblue · 10/10/2021 11:43

Believe me ladies, I would have taken him hostage if it really had been Mark Armstrong. Well if he was channelling his inner Spanner, it might not have been my best move though. Haha. The friend I was with was a big fan of LP in the Musketeers so we could have picked his brains about LP. Strangely she wasn't a fan of OG though.

Does the trailer look good? When is the series starting?

eejittwo · 10/10/2021 15:13

You’d have taken him hostage in the hope that Elvis would show up. Pity if Bones arrived instead

eejittwo · 10/10/2021 15:14

And here’s me only watched OG for LP, too! But then, I’d never have found Spanner.

Magi84 · 10/10/2021 15:37

I only caught the tail end of the trailer for The Long Call ilove but did manage to see that it is this month it starts but no definitive date was shown.

Ilovelblue · 10/10/2021 16:24

Yes maybe Bones would have been a disappointment but if it had been Blue, he would have at least made me smile. He had some great lines to deliver in OG.

BA is playing a gay Detective Inspector who returns to his roots in North Devon with his husband to investigate a murder in a community in which he once lived and left many years after being rejected by his family - on religious grounds, I believe. It's written by Ann Cleeves, so has good pedigree. He looks as wonderful as ever in the trailers. I am glad he's doing something on primetime but also something he really wants to do and feels is true to him.

I'm not a fan of Vera or Shetland, but as BA is in this, I will definitely watch it, and I'm sure he'll do a grand job.

Lawrence of bloody Arabia Grin

Ilovelblue · 11/10/2021 09:37

That's the line I remember the most eejit, delivered whilst on that funny little motorbike/scooter.

Afternoon everyone. I will be on parade at 9pm for the next episode.

Listening to the news today, I couldn't help thinking that it's a pity TG stopped writing OG because there's so much material for a British based series. When you consider everything the army is being asked to do at the present - supervise and give vaccinations, Covid testing, drive ambulances, not to mention drive petrol tankers. Instead of dishing out dubious support in refugee camps around the world, Georgie could have been dishing out medical care in a crisis here...and probably adding to it as well! That sounds a bit like a plot for Soldier, Soldier doesn't it? Remember the episodes driving rubbish lorries and fire engines. Perhaps that's why TG chose to send Two Section abroad all the time.

On another subject, are we going to do an OG revisit after The Musketeers or are we searching for something else that has at least 3 or 4 series? Do we fancy more costume drama or something more contemporary? Should we search the free streaming services to see what there is or are we prepared to buy cheap second hand DVDs?

So many questions! Let's throw some suggestions into the ring!

Magi84 · 13/10/2021 17:52

I had the same thoughts about possible home based OG series. All the situations the army or military in general have had to step up and do would have been real meat for the writers.

As far as what we might continue with once we have completed The Musketeers I think it should be possible to find something on one or other of the channels streaming. There seems to be absolutely tons on there. It would of course be best if it could be BBC as that cuts out the chances of adverts but if it had to be one of the others I guess we could cope. No suggestions in mind at the moment so hope one of us gets inspired.

Rhubarb01 · 13/10/2021 19:27

So, I had a scan through the BBC iPlayer lists. A lot of the dramas only have a single series, but I can see four programmes available with multiple series that might be considered...Spooks (avoid episode 2 of series 1), Hustle, Last Tango in Halifax and Waterloo Road. Another one with multiple series is The Fall but not sure how we feel about crime dramas - I know Spooks is crime-related but on a spy level so not real life. I haven't seen Last Tango, The Fall or Waterloo Road before. Food for thought!

Ilovelblue · 13/10/2021 20:56

Evening all.

When you write everything down like that Rhu, it is just like a modernised version of Soldier Soldier. I think I'd like that!

As for what to watch once The Musketeers is over (third series has just arrived on DVD), I did wonder if we could watch one of the OG series again. Maybe series 2 before going on to something new.

As I think I've said before, my home technology isn't the most amazing so I would probably need something available on a DVD. I do quite fancy Last Tango in Halifax. What does anyone else feel?

If he hadn’t murdered Elvis, he could have been back at Hereford doing selection or training, as he did offer, and Georgie could have been screwing up the Covid response. GrinGrinGrin

Ilovelblue · 13/10/2021 20:59

Haha eejit, not entirely sure Boris needed much assistance in b&ggering up the Covid response but if he did, then Georgie was probably the woman to lend a hand!
