A thread for those watching Season 4 of the Handmaid's Tale on Channel 4 starting this evening. There's another thread for those who have already streamed it via Hulu, so it would be good if we could keep this one free of spoilers for episodes beyond those Channel 4 has broadcast.

OP posts:

Plus, is Esther the first wife we've had clear sympathy for? She's the next generation, isn't she? She wasn't part of setting up Gilead, who has been complicit in rape and stealing children.

Great character, they could do a lot with her.

Eleanor Lawrence?

@Horehound

Uft I've just read Elizabeth moss is a Scientologist.

Kids gone off her now

How do her religious beliefs affect her ability to do her job as an actress and director?
Horehound · 06/07/2021 16:34

It doesn't but it makes me disappointed and not rate her so much so therefore I don't enjoy it so much.. Same with Tom cruise.
Or the same if an actor or actress did something shitty. I just don't like Scientology at all and so I'm allowed to be put off by it.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/07/2021 16:40

I've had to give up watching it. It is too much for me.

Horehound · 06/07/2021 16:46

Did anyone see the last episode of outlander? I found it absolutely sickening. Way worse than handmaids tale!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/07/2021 16:48

I guess thats something else I'm not watching either!

Horehound · 06/07/2021 16:50

Ha yeh give that a miss, it really was horrific

OverByYer · 06/07/2021 16:59

Whose wife is Esther?

BroccoliRob · 06/07/2021 17:10

@OverByYer

Whose wife is Esther?
The older commander from the safe house/farm all the handmaids were staying at. The one that was slowly being poisoned.

Change the word Scientology to Islam/Judaism/Christianity and then read your statement again. Scientology has been recognised as a religion in the U.K. since 2013 and discrimination on the basis of religion is an offence.

You are correct that you are allowed to dislike a religion but I would be careful about using that dislike as a reason to discriminate against people who practice that religion.

MotionActivatedDog · 06/07/2021 17:56

I don’t think @Horehound plans to discriminate against elisabeth moss.

Iggi999 · 06/07/2021 18:05

I'd be much happier if she was a Christian/Jewish/Muslim - I think a lot of people have particular concerns about Scientology (I live somewhere where they try to recruit students, for one).

JoJoandGreg · 06/07/2021 18:05

@MotionActivatedDog

I don’t think *@Horehound* plans to discriminate against elisabeth moss.
Horehound stated that she has gone off THT since she found out Elizabeth Moss is a Scientologist. Seriously, re-read Horehound's statements and replace the word Scientology with any other religion.
MotionActivatedDog · 06/07/2021 18:25

She said she has gone of “her” - the actress- not THT. And that isn’t discrimination.

MotionActivatedDog · 06/07/2021 18:41

Fwiw EMs membership of the Scientology religion has been a point of discussion before on these threads. Specifically questioning how she balances her performance of June with the beliefs of her religion that relate to women and how they should behave.

colouringindoors · 06/07/2021 18:41

Horehound totally agree re Scientology.

Unnbloodybelievable · 06/07/2021 18:54

Oh FFS you are allowed to dislike people for ANY REASON. Including but not limited to:
Religious beliefs
Hair colour
One remark they made 8 years ago
Their parenting style
Their sex
Taste in shoes
Nationality
Etc etc.

Human beings are allowed to be autonomous in their feelings. It’s not a crime, so please back off Thought Police.

There. I said it.

Unnbloodybelievable · 06/07/2021 18:56

Disliking someone is completely different to discriminating against them. And as I doubt Elisabeth Moss will be going for a job interview with horehound or trying to rent a flat off her it’s really not discrimination is it?

Iggi999 · 06/07/2021 19:17

I still think she's a great actor and really carries off this role so well

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 06/07/2021 19:33

Oh yes, Jojo I'd forgotten that she was even a wife because she wasn't in teal. Yes, I had sympathy for Mrs Lawrence.

Horehound · 06/07/2021 20:38

@MotionActivatedDog

I don’t think *@Horehound* plans to discriminate against elisabeth moss.
Lol. Exactly. By Jove, people really need to get a bloody grip.
Coconutmeg · 06/07/2021 21:02

It was pointed out on Eyes on Gilead that Alma was delayed by enough moments to get hit by the train as she was trying to hurry June up. Sad

How was June ahead of her, she just ran faster? Poor Alma and the other one...Brianna?
BroccoliRob · 06/07/2021 21:35

I liked Alma.
