I'm not any better at sewing than poetry as it happens.

Anyways, line for Patrick starts behind me.

@PickAChew

My DM is in East Yorkshire and her WI has been trying to get in touch with local contestants. Andrew didn't reply but Cathryn, who DM was sure she recognised, anyhow, was very forthcoming and is doing a talk for them, later this year.
I really liked Cathryn, but I think she found the time constraints very difficult. (Not like Farie, who just ignores them and urns in unfinished garments.)

I'm a bit disappointed that Andrew didn't even have the courtesy to reply to your DM, even if just to say "Sorry - I can't." He's dropped a bit in my estimation.

That's why I think he thinks he knows better than the instructions he is given. and why he seems to pull it back with the last challenge that they have had time to research, practice and prepare for beforehand. I would hate for him to win or even be second or third as the others plainly love the craft and creativity in their different ways.

Same here, @cateycloggs

Did anyone else notice at the end that serena's blue checked pants matched Raph's shirt? Looked like they'd shared a pair of pyjamas.

This is how gossip starts . . .

Sorry - the reply to @cateycloggs was in regard to Damien - I just realised it looked like I was talking about Andrew.

Sanguinesuzy · 27/05/2021 13:02

I like Damien too ! Think he's got a nice sense of humour and most of what he says is tongue in cheek. Can't understand the hate for him on mumsnet. In the paper it said he actually attended sewing school and had been sewing for 3 years prior so I don't think it was a bet to come on the show.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 27/05/2021 13:27

I don't mind Damien. He's a competent sewer as shown by his shirt in the pattern challenge and with the dress.

He just has no flair or sense of style. Just like Andrew. Both very dated ideas of women's clothes.

Serena seems to be the best sewer, but Raph seems most capable of designing clothes.

I haven't really been wowed by any of them this year though yet.

SoupDragon · 27/05/2021 13:28

He's less annoying than he was in episode 1. Which makes me think it was mostly down to the editing,

kittykarate · 27/05/2021 13:57

I was a bit disappointed to see that the pattern Raph chose actually had the bow integral - I thought he'd made some magical innovation.www.sewessential.co.uk/misses-dresses-new-look-pattern-6571

Raph really does understand fabrics well though.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 27/05/2021 14:03

I preferred Damien’s dress.

But I never go to parties.

Interesting - I thought that his dress yesterday fitted badly around the chest and shoulders, with lots of gaping. But the pictures on the pattern make it look like that's the intention?
Ulysses · 27/05/2021 14:21

I wasn't keen on the design of Raph's winner, the square neckline looked too high and made it seemed a bit dated rather than modern. It did fit the party dress brief perfectly though.

I'm glad Farie managed to pull her purple dress off but do worry that she'll come unstuck soon because she's not great sewing to tight timescales. I thought it was the most wearable out of all of the dresses.

I thought Serena's design was very ambitious and not my cup of tea but appreciate the thought process. I bet she's ruing trying to thicken up her fabric with interfacing rather than getting a different one. The perils of online shopping!

I did like Damien's dress but it wasn't especially festive. I like him too.

Rebecca's was very middle of the road. Well made but no pizazz. For a young woman I find her choices are bit dreary and not terribly stylish.

I guess it was just Andrew's time to go. He's a bit hit and miss.

NutellaEllaElla · 27/05/2021 15:01

I think the fairy at the top of the Christmas tree in my childhood home wore the same dress as Raph's. Same fabric too.

Did it gape around her little plastic boobies, Nutella?

They made out that he had come up with that himself!

I wonder how much it's down to nerves? I talk more when I'm nervous, he could be the same.
Blowingagale · 27/05/2021 17:28

I wonder if the producers had an angle of annoying the wanted to push with Damian? They obviously can’t change how well each contestant does in the sewing, but a lot can be made of which comments/glances are shown.

Sanguinesuzy, I do hope you don't think I am showing hate for Damien for what I posted as I certainly do not 'hate' him. I did doubt whether I should've posted about him it as I am aware ' on all types of reality shows are edited to show characters in a particular way. His is the robust, 'cheeky chappy' role but I am sure there is more to him as with all the others.

To me he is one of those people who can attract (for positiveness, energy, enthusiasm) and repel at the same time. I had not seen the piece about him attending sewing school that's interesting.

iklboo · 27/05/2021 20:40

I think Damien is more exasperating than annoying. DH & I were saying he was probably one of those slightly cocky, funny lads at school who got the girls by making them laugh. Grin

TokyoSushi · 27/05/2021 20:58

Up to date now, right decision for Andrew to go, not sure who will win!

ContinuousMonotoneBeep · 27/05/2021 23:29

Just watched.

I really want Daniem to go. I was very 🤔 about hw they swooned over the office wear he made for a party.

It's ridiculous he is still in. Think you have it right @cateycloggs

I thought it was odd they nearly all made a dress in the transformation despite it being a garmrt for any gender.

GlencoraP · 27/05/2021 23:37

Given that Andrew teaches Maths at secondary levelI expect he is rather busy with his day job at the moment.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 28/05/2021 11:04

I agree Glencora - but a quick note saying "Sorry, I'm really busy at work. Best wishes etc" wouldn't take long out of his day.

GlencoraP · 28/05/2021 11:41

It would, but I wonder if he’s just not really a social media person. I think I remember reading that they all have to set up social media etc with new emails , presumably to prevent personal private ones being the subject of trolling. Maybe he’s just not good at looking at emails . Sounds like I am making excuses for him, it’s just that I hate one mistake to label people when it could just be an innocent oversight .

SnoopCatz · 28/05/2021 12:05

I thought Serenas dress was a bit baggy in the middle and far too short at the back.

Damiens was an excellent fit, I feel a bit sorry for him being snapped at by the judges, quite out of character for them (unless it has been previously edited out).
I do wish Patrick would untuck his tie from inside his high-waist trousers.

terrywynne · 28/05/2021 13:13

I have noticed that they seem to go for skirts or dresses most in the transformations. I guess they are the easiest to quickly assemble?

I liked Rebecca's dress Blush it is exactly what I would have bought for the party. But then I'm not fashion adventurous and it was the type of colour I love

SoupDragon · 28/05/2021 13:54

Yes, I think shorts and trousers/shorts would be far trickier. I think menswear is, on the whole, fairly dull too. Women do seem to be more likely to go for something "fanciful" so the transformations work better.

Men wear shirts/hoodies/t-shirts on the whole" women have all those plus halter neck, cold shoulder, Bardot, asymmetric...
