We really shouldn’t buy our way into the final. It’s just embarrassing.

We'd still have to pay them a chocking great amount, as your national broadcaster member has to pay the EBU a proportion of their 'turnover' (not entirely sure how they calculate that). Italy was paying them a fortune every year, even during the years when they had flounced declined to participate because of artistic differences.

I don't even know if the Big 5 deliberately struck a deal with them, or if it just happened that way organically because we have a combination of the biggest populations and the most internationally-respected/profitable media.

TL;DR - We'd still have to pay the same amount of money whether we participated in Eurovision or not, so we may as well go along with it anyway for the giggles.
