Daði Freyr has done a lot of eurovision covers over the last year, he did a brilliant cover of Brotherhood of Man in JúróDaði 2

There's also a 3 part documentary on his channel (in Icelandic) which is a great watch.

banivani · 21/05/2021 11:39

MÃ¥ns loves Eurovision (and Swedish try-outs, Melodifestivalen). Just loves it. He genuinely feels it's important that it's taken seriously and is a good show. I was listening to an interview with him on the radio the other week and he was very enthusiastic. About that and padel, lol.

RedToothBrush · 21/05/2021 11:42

Mans got a good gig with Eurovision. He was lucky to present the show and lucky the BBC picked him up.

A lot of other winners may do really well post Eurovision - but we don't know about it in the UK because they dont do stuff in the UK. Mans getting the BBC gig (remembering we are one of the big 5) AND presenting Eurovision itself rather than merely just performing is where he differs as UK viewers know about it. But I don't think that means other winners dont have ongoing Eurovision careers and are less successful.

I believe the Russian Shower Guy (who was in it years previously) has a pretty good career and certainly he loved Eurovision enough to return. (There are numerous artists who do so from other countries too). We just arent Russiancentric.

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 21/05/2021 11:50

Do you mean Sergey Lazarev? (Fun Fact alert Wink) He's just done the Russian version of All Together Now (that thing with Ginger Spice) and Michael Rice (UK 2019 - Bigger than us) competed in it as he won the UK one. He made it to the final but didn't win.

So excited for tomorrow. Come on Italy!

Bulgaria did nothing for me in the build up to the contest, but I thought it was such a lovely performance last night. Hope they do well.

OublietteBravo · 21/05/2021 13:23

I’d like to see France or Italy win. Actually, Italy really deserve a win - they’ve been consistently good for years.

Giantrooster · 21/05/2021 13:33

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll Terry Wogan made us a lot of enemies for years after with his 'Dr Death & The Tooth Fairy' comment!

Ah i think it was quite an appropriate and funny comment. Still gets referenced at times in DK Grin.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 21/05/2021 14:44

At no time did I intend to suggest that it wasn't appropriate and funny! He spoke the truth - and we still remember and laugh now Grin

I get the impression that most of the ordinary punters throughout Europe (and beyond) would chuckle along too - I'm sure they find things to giggle at with out performances; not to mention the fact that, in spite of auto-qualifying every year, we haven't won for 23 years - and when we last did win, we needed an American to do it for us!

It's probably just some of the officials with the cat's bum mouths who 'really don't find that amusing' Grin

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 21/05/2021 14:45

*with our performances

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 21/05/2021 14:50

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll

Ah bless him, FloRida opening yesterday, closes the show on Saturday night!

Nothing against him personally, but they should have European equivalents instead: Lim Eric, Bert Mingum, Sarah Yay-voh....

Eurovision has a long history of non Europeans representing participating countries.
Giantrooster · 21/05/2021 15:23

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll in spite of auto-qualifying every year, we haven't won for 23 years

I've wondered about your 'non-winning' streak Wink. When we were all supposed to do our own language, I think it was to your great advantage being understood. But despite having produced some of the best music and singers through time, it really doesn't show when you get to choose your own inputs Grin.

(As an aside there was gossip here, that nobody was interested in winning and hosting the competition, therefore the invites to participate and the voting reflected that. No idea if it's true, but last time we held the contest it was as a huge financial scandal).

WeAreTheHeroes · 21/05/2021 15:47

Right - I've name changed for Eurovision. Formerly MotherOfGodWeeFella.

Come on, it's not that embarrassing, it it?! Grin

WeAreTheHeroes · 21/05/2021 16:06

Ha ha ha - I'm not remotely embarrassed. Love it!

EsmeeMerlin · 21/05/2021 16:48

Just found this thread. I love the Eurovision! My 7 year old son has had to homeschool and isolate all week due to his class being closed and will be isolating all weekend. He has been pretty miserable but has done well with his school work and got the class achievement award today. I thought I would throw a little Eurovision party tomorrow for him, his younger brother and myself. Dh is at work all day. I am going to get the boys to decorate some flags bunting, we have some balloons and glow sticks and then we will have pizza, meatballs and Belgium chocolate ice creams. If anyone has some cost effective activities and food ideas for a 7 year old and a 3 year old, do share!

LookItsMeAgain · 21/05/2021 17:11

@EsmeeMerlin - why don't you make your own Eurovision "Bingo" cards. Have a little prize of some sweets or chocolate for the kids and maybe a glass of wine for you (if you win) and have on the bingo cards things like wind machine, three backing dancers, Graham Norton laughs, Hosts say "Let the Eurovision Song contest begin" or "Voting Lines are now Closed"
things like that. Your 7 year old should enjoy trying to fill out their card. There are ones available on the internet that you could copy and make yourself if you don't have access to a printer.
The three year old could try to count the number of countries that have crosses on their flags maybe?
Would that be the kind of thing you're thinking of?

UCOinanOCG · 21/05/2021 17:56

I'm glad I have found this thread. I am in for tomorrow night. I have bought a smorgasbord of food to consume. Just need to do a wine pairing for the eurofeast. Any suggestions?

EsmeeMerlin · 21/05/2021 17:59

@LookItsMeAgain great suggestion, thank you.

Very much doubt the 3 year old will stay up to watch the actual show so planning on having the little party before and letting the 7 year old stay up to watch the show.

Sakura7 · 21/05/2021 19:25

Any suggestions?

I think something Italian would be fitting. Or maybe French!

UCOinanOCG · 21/05/2021 19:32

I am not fond of Italian or french wine. I. Gout her a Spanish Albariño.

UCOinanOCG · 21/05/2021 19:32

Might look I mean.

OublietteBravo · 21/05/2021 19:51

I quite like Portuguese wine.

OublietteBravo · 21/05/2021 19:55

But feel I should be drinking something ridiculous and probably blue.

(The blue curaçao in the cupboard has been through two house moves with us and is still unopened. It’s probably old enough to be doing A-levels).

JaneJeffer · 21/05/2021 19:56

I think you've had enough.

Ooh great idea. I might do an under the kitchen cupboard cocktail!
