Our Girl Thread 60 "Our Girl, Soldier Soldier and The Musketeers Revisited"

We started to follow "Our Girl" back in 2014 and although there will be no further series, we do revisit from time to time. We are about to finish the final series of "Soldier Soldier" and will be starting on the first series of "The Musketeers". Of course, there is a definite connection between "Our Girl" and "The Musketeers" in the delightful form of Luke Pasqualino.

I am struggling to type as the cat is now sitting on my arm trying to push me off his seat.

Well at least Milady lives to see another day. I wasn't sure for a while.

So, Mr Constance pulls the sympathy strings and poor Constance is ridden with guilt.

Ilovelblue · 27/07/2021 21:49

Ooooh a snog between Constance and D'Art, only stopped when Constance has to go back to see her husband as he tried to top himself. Must be hard for D'Art to witness.

I can’t bear LP in tears.

Rhubarb01 · 27/07/2021 21:51

Yeah eejit reminds me othat tearful, drunken balcony scene in OG.

eejittwo · 27/07/2021 21:51

Athos’ look at Aramis!

Rhubarb01 · 27/07/2021 21:52

The King has the Cardinal in suspense - Queenie is pregnant, Whoops...Aramis looks shifty and Athos gives him the side eye of wonder.

Ilovelblue · 27/07/2021 21:52

So the Queen is pregnant after all. Aramis is the father we presume?

Oops - just heard thunder.

Rhubarb01 · 27/07/2021 21:54

Oh my...oh my. No wonder she is convinced of a healthy, strong baby. Love how they say it all without saying the truth.

eejittwo · 27/07/2021 21:54

Like Queenie’s dress ...

Rhubarb01 · 27/07/2021 21:54

Cardinal is suspicious...he knows. Now you need to be careful Aramis.

Rhubarb01 · 27/07/2021 21:56

A happy ending and more to come.

eejittwo · 27/07/2021 21:56

Well, ilove, was it worth it?

Ilovelblue · 27/07/2021 21:56

This series seems to be wrapping up pretty well.

Off into the sunset they go.

And we still didn't finish the thread!

I have to say I was a bit unsure for the first few episodes because it was hard to work out who was who but it got easier thankfully.

I've just had the second series delivered today.

Why don't we polish off this thread then we can start afresh the week after next?

I never really understood why this series was regarded by some as more suited to a Sunday teatime serial then its post-watershed slot, just because it didn’t have graphic sex and violence. It has always seemed to me more adult for that very reason, and children would never appreciate the one liners.

Ilovelblue · 27/07/2021 23:42

Well ladies, I'm off on holiday next week. Can you believe it, a holiday after all this lockdown stuff! See you for the start of series 2 in August.

eejit I think it's the swashbuckling nature of the action, the fact that most stories get happily resolved at the end and it followed in the wake of similar shows such as Merlin and Robin Hood - a bit of costume drama with the witty one-liners thrown in. I'm sure I read somewhere when it first came out that the producers or writers had been told it would be a pre 9pm show and so some of the sex and violence was toned down and then the BBC decided to schedule it after 9pm so people scratched their heads a bit when it came out, trying to decide what it was. The later series were definitely aimed at post 9pm and seem a bit darker.

eejittwo · 28/07/2021 11:22

Doesn’t answer the question of why people think swashbuckling is just for kids. Plus, I’ve never really bought the notion that anything adult has to be darker, or the equation of psychological drama with ‘darker’. Heck, there’s a lot of psychological drama going on in Pride and Prejudice, but no-one could accuse it of being ‘dark’. There’s plenty sex. of course, but mostly in the head of the characters (and viewers - Colin Firth’s swim, ladies?) and the actual stuff happens off the page - which is just as well, as regards Rev Collins and Charlotte. Blush

Rhubarb01 · 28/07/2021 15:56

Just going to say that the swim in the pond and Colin Firth in his wet shirt and breeches does nothing for me and never has. I know that's not a popular opinion - certainly not with Bridget Jones - but it didn't add anything to my appreciation. It does, however, display him in a more human light and break down that proud veneer. I suppose that's when Elizabeth starts to view him as a 'man'. Of course, it's a total invention by the BBC production, but it's part of broadcasting legend now.

As for swashbuckling - welll, I suppose Errol Flynn has a lot to answer for. All those jolly japes in Sherwood Forest and pirate adventures. It's hard to think of something of the swashbuckling ilk that hasn't either been a bit tongue in cheek or considered family viewing. I suppose that's the issue with Musketeers. A long history of being a classic tale and much filmed makes it seem - at least on the surface - to be a less serious tale.

Well, have a good holiday, ilove hope the weather stays fair for you. It was a bit too hot last week, but we certainly don't want weeks of downpours and grey skies. Enjoy and stay safe. See you back on on here the week after next!

Ilovelblue · 28/07/2021 23:49

Thanks Rhu. It'll be nice to go away. This was booked between Christmas and New Year, pre the last lockdown, and the hotels have rocketed up in price since then so it was a good move, even though there were times earlier this year when it seemed as if the country was never going to open up again!
