Those pontificating about how it is “important political drama” (mother of god!) should watch earlier series. Series 2 and 3 with Keeley Hawes - brilliant.

IcedPurple · 04/05/2021 16:57

@IntermittentParps

But I don't think people are saying it all has to be about 'car chases and shootouts'. Just that they'd have liked to see a more coherent plot and less of a flat ending.

Well, some people were saying they watch it for entertainment/drama/action. That's what I was really addressing.

But it is entertainment and drama! Or at least it's meant to be!

Why else would anyone watch a drama about fictional characters, if not for entertainment purposes?

IntermittentParps · 04/05/2021 17:07

IcedPurple, OK, take out 'entertainment' from what I said and just read 'some people were saying they watch it for drama/action.'
My point being that yes, it's always had that – and it has also always had office/procedural scenes and people being delayed and foiled by bureaucracy.

I think we're talking in circles so this will be my last reply.

Sure, there have always been office based scenes, but they added to the intrigue. The most famous aspect of LoD is the intense interview scenes, which certainly aren't about 'action'. So it's not that people were only going to be satisfied with an ending involving a car chase or a shoot out. It's that they wanted a finale in keeping with what they've come to expect from LoD over the past decade. However, if you enjoyed the ending, that's great.

IntermittentParps · 04/05/2021 17:32

We really are talking in circles.
All I was 'arguing' with you about was what the office/bureaucracy scenes added to the show/if they were intentionally dull. I didn't want a big argument...

Definately · 04/05/2021 17:56

I think there's a halfway place between the people who wanted madcap stuff like Kate to be H and Ted to die and Steph to be hiding a still Alice Jimmy Nesbitt in her house, and the ones who are happy with the ending because it reflects mundane reality. And that halfway place are those of us who thought Osbourne would be taken down, preferable like this Grin

Definately, my fond hope is they're saving that for the next series...!

BobBobBobbin · 04/05/2021 18:29

LoD has always been a bit of a commentary on the police - but when you go back to S1 it was a combination of drama with a bit of satire (lots of swipes about box-ticking etc, the stereotyped ‘civvy’ jobsworth etc).

This season, particularly in bringing in references to Stephen Lawrence / Christopher Alder it’s taken that commentary into a much more serious place - TBH this was developing quite strongly already through the child abuse storyline, but the Lawrence case really wasn’t a necessary part of the plot this season and was really only there as a commentary.

So I think the ending was in keeping with that tone - but I think it could have been done better.

Definately · 04/05/2021 18:47

Oh please ignore all the spelling errors in my post. My phone has a mind of its own. A still alive Jimmy Nesbitt that should read.

Has to please God!

GellerYeller · 04/05/2021 19:21

I read they have a police consultant on hand to ensure the jargon and processes are accurate. So my question is does anyone know the protocol for someone whose murder was attempted to interview one of the possible conspiracists? I'm thinking the CPS may not consider Kate impartial and it could hinder the chances of a conviction had they charged Buckells? Can anyone clear that up?!

GellerYeller · 04/05/2021 19:43

Conspiracists? ConspI raters! As you were fellas Blush

GellerYeller · 04/05/2021 19:44

Conspirators FFS

cardibach · 04/05/2021 21:42

All this talk of series 7 - this series was billed as the conclusion which is why it got the numbers it did. A 7th series would be very cynical and I wouldn’t watch. Not going to be suckered in again.

@GellerYeller: no idea what the answer actually is, but I'm guessing impartiality is the key. I don't think the evidence would be inadnissable necessarily but it would give the defence an opportunity to claim ipartiality. Probably not good practice for that reason. Interesting thought.

IntermittentParps · 05/05/2021 08:33

this series was billed as the conclusion What, explicitly to the whole thing? or just to this season?

IrmaFayLear · 05/05/2021 08:41

The political comment was very clunky. Just to make sure we all “got” it. Yes, those who are sneering at us “drama” types. We did indeed get it, because it was slapping us in the face like a wet kipper.

Agree, liked the earlier series’ observations, such as the jobsworth admin person in series 1 who was always giving heartfelt sighs and then going off with stress. We all know these people - but I guess by series 6 it’s no longer “approved” to lampoon them.

@StopTryingToSellMeYourBollocks

There are some bits that don't quite add up, but I think you need that if a S7 is going to be made. Most shows do this unless they give a definitive "we won't be making any more series".

I do wonder what S7 will bring since AC-12 has been weakened. I wonder if the main AC-12ers will go into other roles from different stations, but have a secret unofficial AC-12. There is only uncovering the OCG left, but finding out who is running them might be a way to go (my bet is that Andrew Laverty is out there somewhere). There is also the option of looking at journalism and politics in association with crime in more depth, rather than direct police corruption.

I think Jed could do really well with creating a drama around politics. He likes to put a message across doesn't he? There is plenty of material about at the moment too. The main character will be John Borisson.

On a side note I would really love it if James Nesbitt won a best actor award for his part in the show.

I think the locks in Jo's flat should get all the awards, they terrified me.

Yeah, I posted it only about 20 posts back up the thread and everyone ignored it.

It's very, very good. The toddler does a great job too!
