Anyone watching? I'm loving it so far!

Interesting @FindBetty I thought the model was a good choice as she had quite ‘blank’ features (this sounds like I’m insulting her but I’m really not). Quite pale and no high colour in her face, her brows and lashes were quite light so I thought it showed makeup we’ll and also made it clear if something was very visible. She had the type of face that could easily look very ‘made up’.

Queenie has such beautiful clear skin.

IntermittentParps · 05/05/2021 12:35

Have now watched the first episode (I know, I'm slow).
It was also really interesting to learn that Georgiana had such a highly paid hairdresser.
I have such a vivid image of Gilbert Grin

It was great. I thought it might be a bit lightweight being presented by someone not an academic, but it's a good format. The experts for the 'heavier' stuff give it heft, and I think it really makes it lively and relevant to have Lisa Eldridge doing her thing commenting on the products and using them. Lisa is a terrific presenter: so natural, and funny, and curious about everything.

munchbunch12 · 05/05/2021 18:28

I really enjoyed all 3 episodes, I hope they make more, although what eras could they cover next?

squidgle · 05/05/2021 19:24

If you liked the presenter (Lisa Eldridge), have a look at her YouTube channel. I've loved Lisa's videos for years.

whitershadeofpale · 05/05/2021 20:19
this was a fun video she did a few years ago when her book on makeup history came out.

@munchbunch12 it gives some insight into other eras. She had said that the series was originally meant to be broader but corona travel restrictions meant it became more UKcentric, so I suppose there’s still lots of scope for series 2.

tentosix · 05/05/2021 20:20

Fascinating programme, unexpectedly so

munchbunch12 · 05/05/2021 20:44

Thanks @whitershadeofpale what a fab video, I'll have to look for the book.

I'm not even that interested in make up, but thought this show got a great balance between that, science and social history!

I'd love the Egyptians, Tudors, perhaps a programme looking at men and make up?
ClingFilmAndGafferTape · 06/05/2021 01:02

I've tried the clove brow - it really works!

memberofthewedding · 06/05/2021 01:13

As someone who sells costume accessories on line and has hundreds of books on costume, jewellery and the history of hair styles and cosmetics I really enjoyed this series of programs. Yes, it was a little lightweight but these programs are made for entertainment rather than for academics. I thought the choice of the model (Queenie) was excellent because she has the kind of face which can be adapted for every era. It was amazing how she could be made into a 1920s vamp for this weeks episode. I do hope they extend the series.

BunnyRuddington · 06/05/2021 08:32

I didn't realise it had ended. Hope they do commission some more episodes.

diddl · 06/05/2021 15:59

I'm not a make up person.

Still thought that it was interesting though.

Loved the scientist!

IntermittentParps · 06/05/2021 16:20

Oh yes, me too! 'Let's treat it with care and respect ' Grin

It sounds as though more material was planned, so hopefully they'll make another series.

squidgle · 06/05/2021 16:52

Just bought Lisa's book. Have been meaning to for a while now!

Buggerthebotox · 06/05/2021 21:12

Loved that! The vintage makeup was fascinating, especially the little compact/fag holder. I'd love a shingled bob... often wonder why bobs are not more popular.

Sleepingdogs12 · 09/05/2021 14:28

Really interesting, I am not bothered about make up but pleased to see a programme about woman's lives (some) .

randomlyLostInWales · 11/05/2021 10:23

whitershadeofpale thank you for the you tube link.

DD1 and I absolutely loved this series and I've a couple of books to add to her birthday list.

Also know what TaraR2020 means having met said lady though I still watch those programs.
