No history lovers amongst the Masterchef fans then?

Prince Philip has been an enormously significant figure in the history of our country, and indeed others. His passing warrants coverage which reflects that.

I imagine there may be some sort of contract/arrangement with the National Broadcaster, there was certainly a plan, as there will be for when The Queen dies.

I’m looking forward to the Final as well, and will enjoy it when it is broadcast; I keep searching the forward listings but no sign yet.

bonfireheart · 11/04/2021 08:37

Worth following @scottygb on twitter, who works in broadcasting and seems to have latest information on scheduling changes.

Peregrina · 11/04/2021 09:17

I am certainly a history lover, and for example found Lucy Worsley's recent programme about the Blitz well done and informative. But the complaint about the BBC was that they devoted all their channels to this, with the information on repeat. I think few of us would have minded if they had shunted programmes across to BBC 2 and 4, or at least told us when they expected to run them.

I couldn't help wonder, what would have happened if Prince Philip had died a day later. Would they really not have shown the Grand National? I think not.

IstandwithJackieWeaver · 11/04/2021 09:36

Being a history lover and wanting to see the MasterChef final are not mutually exclusive. The BBC broadcast blanket coverage across it TV and radio networks on Friday afternoon. Imho shelving the evening TV schedules in favour of even more coverage, much of which was repetition, was too much.

bonfireheart · 11/04/2021 09:40

I haven't watched a single minute of the Prince Philip coverage. And on the day of the funeral DD has a skateboarding lesson so won't be able to watch it and doubt I'll watch it back. Feel like I might have to hand in my passport for not partaking in this "historical moment".

LaMarschallin · 11/04/2021 09:42

Quite.

I have a lot of respect for some of the things the Duke did and was happy to read all the coverage in the Times.

But to have exactly the same coverage on a (small) loop on both BBC 1 and 2 didn't make it feel more of an historical occasion to me; it felt more like brain washing.

Although, given the tone some posters have taken (not just on this thread), emphasising the historical import of his death, the respect due and comments like "Well, turn off the television and read a book" or "Watch Netflix instead" makes me feel they think someone objecting to the mass coverage has very little brain to wash.

Actually, I read far more than I watch television and don't have Netflix because of that.
One of my "must watches" is Masterchef with GBM following hard on its heels.
I still don't understand why BBC2 couldn't have carried normal programmes or, at least, have different coverage of the news.

And I don't think that implies I'm ignorant of history or unaware of the implications of various news events.

You can't possibly deduce that, from this thread. I am a history lover but I wanted to watch the MC final. I didn't need wall to wall coverage about the death of a man I feel somewhat ambivalent towards. I don't think he was a great example of manhood, with his frequent gaffs and racist comments, well documented.

Prince Philip has been an enormously significant figure in the history of our country, and indeed others. His passing warrants coverage which reflects that.

In your opinion. Clearly many people disagree with you.

Sunbird24 · 11/04/2021 13:47

I was sad to hear the news, particularly for his family, and especially for the Queen who has loved him for nearly 80 years. I did watch some of the programming about his life, and I had absolutely no problem with wall to wall coverage on one of the main BBC channels, but can’t see the point in showing the exact same thing on two or more channels. I wasn’t bothered enough to complain though.

Peregrina · 11/04/2021 14:01

I feel a bit sorry for the Masterchef winner. He or she must have been bursting to tell their friends and celebrate and now have to keep schtumm for a while longer.

Horridcreature · 11/04/2021 14:07

Could have continued normal coverage on one channel. Maybe have a strap line across occasionally (not all the time) that there was coverage on BBC 1/2/news of death of Duke of Edinburgh. Anyone who maybe only tuned in for a specific programme and not followed the need that day gets the news and where to find out more.

Horridcreature · 11/04/2021 14:08

News not need

mazylou · 12/04/2021 12:16

I can see it programmed for 23rd April. At 03.20?!

I’m actually shocked it wasn’t leaked. So often things like social media announcements are scheduled ahead of time, I can’t believe everyone managed to keep it to themselves!
Peregrina · 12/04/2021 12:22

3:20!

I won't be staying up to watch.
Couldn't they have found a slot before then?

Rukaya · 12/04/2021 12:25

He really really has not. His passing warrants a couple of hours of coverage on ONE channel, not the faux-national mourning of simulcast for days on end.

Rukaya · 12/04/2021 12:25

Has to be the originally scheduled repeat...that won't be the rescheduled showing.

mazylou · 12/04/2021 12:29

Good point, so it looks like they’ve not scheduled the actual broadcast yet.

IstandwithJackieWeaver · 12/04/2021 12:52

It's probably contractual that it can't be leaked by those who know.

MoltenLasagne · 12/04/2021 19:21

It looks like the Final still hasn't been rescheduled. Was hoping a new week may have given us some updated time. Can't they put on iplayer if they can't find a time to put it on?

Pebbledashery · 12/04/2021 19:36

Oh the delay is just so unfair 😡

It's farcical. I bet they're wishing they hadn't been trailing the Greta Thunberg programme so heavily or they could have postponed that tonight.

GrandTheftWalrus · 12/04/2021 19:45

Was literally coming on to see if it had been rescheduled yet.

I know they've moved football on Saturday and the Scottish grand national is now going to run on the Sunday.

ScaryMimeker · 12/04/2021 19:58

WHAT?? The 23rd? You're shitting me. Where is this on the TV guide?

ScaryMimeker · 12/04/2021 19:59

FFS Phil (RIP) did you really have to go on final day?? Couldn't have waited 1 more day?

Pebbledashery · 12/04/2021 20:10

I bet the winner is livid!
