It's surprisingly rated 6th on Netflix in the UK, so wondering how many have watched and if they have any questions about it?

I've only watched the first episode thus far but I'm fairly familiar with the story and I was raised in the LDS church.

Maybe it's just LDS that have watched it then 😆

I've watched it but the only question I have is 'what happened to Shannon Flynn's voice?'

Newnamefor2021 · 12/03/2021 12:50

Haha, yes I wondered that too. No answer there I'm afraid.

Read up and he had cancer in 2018 and had part of his lung removed. I was thinking cancer but seemed odd for lung cancer for someone LDS. Although I realise anyone can get lung cancer not just smokers.

I've watched episode one but wasn't hooked tbh. Are they saying that the LDS Church blew up that bloke because he had documents about the church that they didn't want him to have? Something about a salamander? Odd.

Pashazade · 12/03/2021 13:00

No really it's all to do with document forgery and what people are willing to believe is real/pay big bucks for. I found it really interesting and the "baddy" is a fascinating character in a total sociopath kinda way!

IHaveBrilloHair · 12/03/2021 13:01

I got bored and turned it off.

MadisonMontgomery · 12/03/2021 13:01

Definitely more interesting than I expected it to be!

That's what they are implying in Episode 1 yes, and I guess from the information at the time that was what it looked like, but that wasn't the reality.

Salamander letter, well it's an odd one but not really that much more odd that the whole basis of the LDS faith on the whole really. Spoiler - it was made up anyway, it didn't exist and was fabricated but the church wanted to buy it anyway, along with other things that they did believe were true.

Yeah, he definitely seemed clever in a calculating kind of way to know how to play people and manipulate them.

Yeah, I was surprised it was at position 6 in the chart, I find it fascinating as having an insider view on it and seeing the undercurrent of what's happening.

Letsrunabath · 12/03/2021 13:28

I watched it, found it really interesting how much they wanted to believe.

Cocolapew · 12/03/2021 13:33

I thought it was just ok. I was very impressed at his forging skills though, especially when there was no internet to look stuff up.

Newnamefor2021 · 12/03/2021 13:54

Well hats off to Joseph Smith their prophet for creating the book or Mormon, doctrine and covenants and Pearl of great price without internet. Even with the blindingly obvious issues with those members still believe fully and see all the inconsistencies as an attack on their religion.

Read a book on this case when it happened. He had the church coming and going. He forged documents that strengthened the church's own history and others that debunked it. Of course, they wanted to buy both. Everybody liked him, but it turns out he was a remorseless sociopath. And an amazing forger.

WisnaeMe · 13/03/2021 14:11

I watched 2 episodes it last night.

last one tonight, I found it very interesting.

I struggle to believe any historical documents are genuine articles, but that's just me. 😂

WisnaeMe · 13/03/2021 14:12

please excuse that laughing emoji, fat fingers.

SinkGirl · 13/03/2021 14:14

I’m amazed people are saying they didn’t find it interesting - I suppose the first episode was less captivating but episodes 2 and 3 are incredibly good. Absolutely fascinating case. His skills were quite amazing and i wonder what he could have achieved if he’d put his mind to something legitimate.

It has also made me think about “experts” and how expert they really are.

If anyone was really interested in the forgery element I would really recommend Made You Look (also Netflix) about a huge art fraud case.

SinkGirl · 13/03/2021 14:16

The interviews in episode 3 genuinely shocked me.

oh great, DH and I are watching tonight.

can you recall what the Art fraud called? I think I'd like that too. 🌺

WisnaeMe · 13/03/2021 14:19

Made You Look

sorry I realised you posted that, thank you 🌺

ApolloandDaphne · 13/03/2021 14:21

I thought the first episode was boring but I decided to keep watching and by the end I was hooked.

Newnamefor2021 · 13/03/2021 14:41

Amazingly talented. All those processes and from such a young age.

Made we think about the expert opinions too, clearly means very little. It looks authentic so that's as far as they look.

The killing though and how cold he didn't care if the bomb went off or not. That was chilling.

OP posts:
SinkGirl · 13/03/2021 14:46

I don’t want to spoil it but there are a few things he says in that third episode that are beyond chilling. He’s a psychopath in the truest sense of the word. Very disturbing.

DulciUke · 13/03/2021 15:03

He got the paper from old books and 19th century stationery, which apparently can still be bought. He used 19th century ink recipes to make his own ink. This is how good he was--he knew that the ink as well as the paper would be tested for age. He burned some 19th century paper and used the ash in his ink. This was good enough to fool any spectrograph type of equipment that experts used to authenticate it. If he had spread his "discoveries" out a bit more and not gotten so greedy he could have kept it up for years.
