Our Girl Thread 59 "Our Girl and Soldier Soldier Revisited"

We have been following Our Girl since 2014 and although there are to be no further series, we revisit time and time again to discuss. As an alternative, we are also watching the 1990s series of Soldier Soldier. We are now on series 7.

Mark is really a mess. He used to be much better than this.

Angie and Chris want to have a baby now.

Angie's hair looks as if it's been attacked with a lawn mower.

She announces she's ready to have a baby. Ah, that's nice.

Andy and his Mum have to wash the primrose painted puppies in the bath!

Sgt Shouty needs to grow up.

I think that was a genuine accident, but he's gone and done it now.

Poor Mark - what a state of affairs. Why didn't just tell Kate the truth.

I think they are throwing everything into the mix in all episodes lately and never really seeing any of them through to a decent outcome

Hmmm, I thought that episode was quite thought provoking actually. The PTSD aspect and the attitude in the 90s towards homosexuality.

Yes eejit I can't imagine the paint coming off that easily. You know how difficult it is to get a paintbrush clean even when it's water-based emulsion.

The Mark storyline is realistic, at least. Sad numbers of ex-squaddies end up on the streets.

Apparently, the ban on homosexuality in the armed forces was lifted in 2000, so at the time this was made, it was under discussion. I suppose the writers thought it a good storyline. Shame they had to write Sgt Shouty as such a bone-headed Neanderthal. It's uncomfortable to hear some of the things being said, but I suppose it's something of it's time and reflects attitudes at that time.

As for Jacko - if Julie is persuaded to take him back, she needs her head examined.

Mark's story seems a bit rushed. We barely had time to see him leave the army before he was a down and out and relying heavily on booze. It can only have been a few weeks.

Harrumph! Unfair to Neanderthals who were sensitive and liked music and art. Archaeologists have found musical instruments at Neanderthal sites! 😂
