Am I alone in thinking Spooks has totally lost the plot and is completely lacking in any coherence or logic now? None of it now makes any sense, and the whole Roz & the Iranian ambassador's wife thing with Adam is just ridiculous.

Harrumph! Bring back Ruth!

I miss Ruth as well.

ChipButty · 01/11/2007 13:14

It does make sense but I find I'm having to watch each episode twice. The fact that RP-J gets his kit off quite a lot has nothing to do with it. Honestly.

Zebedeedoodah · 01/11/2007 13:28

That's absolutely NOT the reason I'm still watching!
And it may make some sort of sense, but it has lost any attempt at logic. I'm still hoping things will improve.

I am happy to confess I am totally in love with R P-J. Is it wrong to look forward to Tesco adverts to catch a glimpse of him? Is Zaf really well and truly gone (in france so no idea of UK gossip etc....)

scampadoodle · 02/11/2007 17:52

I watched this week's episode last night, & either I am thick as 2 short ones (not impossible ) or that plot was completely impenetrable. Was it a real cargo plane? Whose was it? Why was it shot down? What were the MoD doing?????

F*ck knows!!!

lovecat · 02/11/2007 18:11

Well, as far as I could gather...

It was a real plane, not carrying any chemicals, though.

It wasn't shot down, it collided with the US's super-secret new spy plane (hence that bit with air-traffic control where they were saying 'there's nothing on the radar, you're all clear' before they crashed).

The thing with the chemicals was to distract everyone from finding out that the super-secret plane was flying missions from the UK airbase and keep people away from the area.

The crusties outside the base thought there were aliens there because of the strange lights of the super-secret spy plane.

The MOD were in collusion with the Yanks to stop anyone finding out that the sssp was there.

What all that has to do with Ros and the water torture, though, I have no idea.

And is Zaf really dead, then??

scampadoodle · 02/11/2007 18:58

Very well explained Lovecat. I was obviously being a tad dim last night.

I think Ros & the Yalta people thing is a separate plot strand, to be continued... That French bint is bloody annoying though.

As for Zaf, well, I have a hunch he's still alive, though god knows how.

Also - when Rupert had the vaccine he was out of hospital the same afternoon ! Bloody quick recovery, considering he'd started to haemmorhage (sp?)

Ilovenutella · 02/11/2007 19:18

Yeah - and what was that bit about the SPy plane and the return of Zaf to the UK (at the end where they looked at the route of the spy plane over the map?)..... Gerschluuurrrr? Quite like Zaf too - if all spies were that sexy they would be rubbish at being undercover!

tigerschick · 02/11/2007 19:21

I thought that the whole outbreak thing was too swiftly over and done with. Surely if that Iranian chap was so infectious they would have had to spend days searching for everyone who he might have passed it on to.

The Ros/Yalta thing is definately coming back.

I'm not sure about Zaf. Remember they killed off Danny during a season break and just came back at his funeral the first episode

Still enjoying it but it doesn't seem to be as good as it was - or have I got rose-tinted lenses?

ChipButty · 02/11/2007 22:15

I think we are so used to stand alone episodes or two-parters that it's going to take a bit of time for us to get used to the new format. However, Spooks has some of the most fantastic writers and I'm sure all the strands will become clear as the series continues. KEEP THE FAITH!

scampadoodle · 02/11/2007 22:21

Oh yes, Nutella, that thing about the plane routes: Whaaaaat TF!!!

I will keep the faith, if only to prove something to DH, who thinks it's bollocks.

And do spy planes really glow fluorescent green like that?!

ChipButty · 02/11/2007 22:24

I guess it is bollocks, in that real MI5 work involves months of waiting around, boring surveillance and paper shuffling, but it's entertaining bollocks, nonetheless! x

tigerschick · 03/11/2007 08:09

Agree Chipbutty - none of this kind of programme ever gives a true represtentation of what actually happens (I'm referring to anything that focusses on one profession - The Bill, Teachers, Red Caps CSI etc etc etc)
But that's not the point - it's entertaining!

lailasmum · 03/11/2007 08:16

I don't think zaf is gone. The series is wierd cos before each episode was a bit more self contained but this time the story line seems to wander on and on. I am definitely missing Ruth from this series. The dynamic in the team seems a bit odd.

tigerschick · 03/11/2007 08:23

I'm so glad that Malcolm hasn't been killed off. When we thought he was going to die I seriously considered giving up with watching it.
Not sure how this new woman is going to fit in ... but they do change the cast fairly regularly and it always seems to work in the end

Ilovenutella · 03/11/2007 08:45

I was worried about Malcolm too - I liked the previous geek who worked with him and miss him too. Like the new character though - Connie seems like a nice granny but I get the impression she is hard as nails. respect. Didn't realise they were doing things differently this time i.e. ongoing story. THAT confused me - but if it is ongoing then can cope now.
Always fancied being a spy...........

MrsJohnCusack · 03/11/2007 08:57

is Ruth the one that always says 'dirty bomb'

TBH I never really got over Tom leaving - Matthew Macfayden is just too swoony

MrsJohnCusack · 03/11/2007 08:59

(can I point out I am very behind as well as in NZ and only watching it on UKTV)

tigerschick · 03/11/2007 09:03

Oh goodness yes, wasn't he called Colin, or Clive, or something. That was awful when they killed him off. Quite pleased they didn't replace him tho. It would have seemed odd to have someone new straight away.
Agree about Connie being tough as nails. I quite like her too, but I don't know how she is going to change the team. Think that they sort of wanted a replacement for Ruth in relation to Harry, you know, someone who can talk to him as a human being.

tigerschick · 03/11/2007 09:06

x-posts (phone rang) I agree about when Matthew McFadyen (sp). At about the same time they had a real 'clear out' and got rid of him and the other 2 main characters who'd been in since the beginning ... both in very odd ways. The woman just left after being accused of something like entrapment I think and the chap, Danny, was killed off in between 2 serise. Very strange.

BTW - sorry if we've spoiled future episodes for you! Ruth was the one who came on secondment from GCHQ and then stayed.

incy · 03/11/2007 09:08

For those of you (like myself) who were mystified by Tuesdays episode then here is a summary of what was supposedly happening -

'Section D receives intelligence that a plane has crashed near an American airbase on UK soil, and fear that it may have been shot down on purpose. They need to find out what really happened - if Iran were involved, the reprisals could spiral into war.

With the team unaware of her kidnap, Ros is subjected to mental torture but, when released, she learns that it was all a recruitment exercise. 'Yalta' is a shadowy international group of double agents and senior government officials who work together in an attempt to thwart American dominance in world politics - they want Ros to join them.

With their offer playing on her mind, Ros returns to the Grid where she and Jo interrogate a source of Jo's from the MoD who reveals that the Americans were illegally testing their controversial new spy plane, Aurora, in UK airspace when it collided with a freight plane.

The team investigate Aurora's recent flight routes and learn that the craft also tracked MI5's recent operation in Tehran. It becomes clear that America were behind the false intelligence which led to MI5 setting off the bomb in Tehran. Knowing that the bomb would expose Iran's possession of biological weapons, the US hoped to justify military action towards them.

Learning that the US is prepared to manipulate Britain, its closest ally, is the motivation Ros needs to make her first contact with Yalta. Not for the first time, she is on the path to becoming a traitor. '

MrsJohnCusack · 03/11/2007 09:27

oh don't worry about spoilers
I need to start watching it again, but I did lose interest rather when Tom and Danny and whatsherface that Keeley Hawes played all left quite close together

scampadoodle · 03/11/2007 15:08

That's a good storyline about Ros as I've always felt she was a bit untrustworthy - she was recruited under duress, after all.

Something else is confusing me though: at the end of the last series didn't we leave Adam & Ros drowning at the Thames Flood Barrier??? They got out, obviously, but it's a bit strange that it was never referred to...

scampadoodle · 03/11/2007 15:09

So miss Ruth though. She & Harry would have had such a lovely relationship (sniff).

edam · 03/11/2007 15:10

I'm not really enjoying this series, which is a shame. Have been a Spooks addict in the past, but there's something lacking about this one. Maybe it's the shift from individual episodes to one over-arching theme, I dunno.
