The early series were amazing (not that the latter ones aren't good, but like many things there are only so many storylines and so things get repeated)

Pipandmum · 23/01/2021 18:51

After avoiding it for years I binged watched it with my teenage daughter during lockdown in the Spring. Its up to mid 60s now and horrifying to think that's when me and my sisters were born - though my mother did have us in hospital my dad still wasn't allowed - and he was a doctor!

CoffeeWithCheese · 23/01/2021 21:01

I avoided it for ages because I'd had horrendous birth trauma myself and it was triggering - but then started watching and loved it from the social history point of view. It's become a bit shit and Call the Turners now.

It's good while they follow Jennifer Worth's stories. Once they go on to write their own it gets a bit soaplike. I still love it though :o

@Iamblossom

I love it too. But I do agree the early series are the best and if you can make it through to the most recent episode without wanting smack the Turners or shove Sister Monica Joan off a cliff, then you’re a better person than I am!

Incidentally, the “jump the shark” moment for me was the Africa Christmas special. Without giving anything away, it’s definitely a turning point.

Having said all that, I can’t wait for the new series!

Agree with all the comments about how the early series were really good.

Am I right in thinking that there was no annoying background music in the early series. It is part of what makes the latest ones seem so naff. Its like they themselves dont believe it is any good so have to give these heave hints about what we are meant to feel.

I cant remember the early plots but do remember both the shock of how bad it was for (some) women and what an amazing service the nuns were providing.

I’ve been watching them from the start on iplayer- they are feel good even when they have sad endings. I love social history side of things.

janeymacaronie · 24/01/2021 03:52

My mother was a midwife in Belfast in the late 60's. I grew up listening to her stories of cycling to births and living with the scary nuns , so I absolutely love this program as it makes me feel close to her!

If the Turners could bog off wholesale it could still be great. The family planning and abortion stories have been superb.

But the early series are such a joy. Hope you keep going and love them.

LizFlowers · 24/01/2021 18:38

It's great. I've watched every episode of every series at least three times and never tire of it. I can't wait for the next series.

Toddlerandtwinstobe · 24/01/2021 18:49

I couldn’t watch this for ages after my birth either, then got back into it again a few years later! It’s just lovely to watch, even though it’s emotional it’s one of those things that puts life into perspective.

I do feel like they’ve failed Trixie’s character though. And whilst I love sister Monica Joan, she’s had so many nice story lines that you think it would be the end for her by now... end on a high and all that.

Oh and I love the Turners. Blush

madameMscastle · 24/01/2021 19:56

I still cant watch " one born every minute" for similar reasons but im ok with call the midwife.
Love the history part of it.
I'm so emotional with it though and always have a tear in my eye by the end of a episode haha
