Jellykat · 05/02/2021 22:05

In tears, so many memories of that time.

x2boys · 05/02/2021 22:10

Whilst it's great the man you have refencedd in the article is still alive and well and has finally got effective treatment @HIVpos he's the same age as me I think it's sad that he must have lived for many year ,s if he was diagnosed in 1996 worrying that his life would be shortened.

MercyBooth · 05/02/2021 22:35

@Hivpos Thanks for your very informative posts. Ive learned a lot from reading them.

Re the acting profession , I remember an episode of Great Canal Journeys where Timothy West and Prunella Scales were talking about how sad it was that in the world outside the acting profession their fellow actors and friends had to hide who they really were. So from that ive assumed the acting profession was/is more accepting.

as if men were absolved of caring responsibilities, and Jill's inmate caring nature was down the the innate caring nature of women. It's very problematic.

He wrote Jill in the same way he wrote Donna in QAF - gay best friend trope (similar to what used to be known as a fag hag, before that phrase was quite rightly given the boot...) so she isn't fleshed out; we are supposed to see the advent of the virus through her eyes. That said, it was never meant to be about her - it was about the plight of gay men. That it shone a light on those like her, of which there were many, is a belated recognition - the same as the lesbian allies in Pride. Like this woman - www.theguardian.com/society/2021/feb/03/aids-angel-ruth-coker-burks-dying-gay-men
although the title chosen for that / as a young woman ministering to the sick - as an angel is also somewhat loaded in its language. We talk of gendered roles - forty years after the AIDS crisis began - it's now 2021 and 90% of nurses ARE still female. 84% of social care carers - women. Women twice as likely to take on unpaid informal caring.
There were male carers and male partners and friends and ex-lovers doing their bit - for example Peta helped take care of David Kirby (and in an awful twist of fate, when Peta then took ill, David's family helped look after him) but I still think RTD has managed to sum up many, many stories and lived experiences well in only five hours.
The fathers did not come out of it well either - homophobic, angry, powerless or falling to pieces. It is possible that the Keeley storyline happened. The show was based on many of Jill Nalder's experiences and she lost 3 friends to AIDS.

Watched episode 3 in real time then binged episodes 4 and 5 on All 4. So emotional

@LyraShaeLilly

I've just got to the end of this, such a good series and cant believe how they were treated. Was Colin raped or was it consensual, I couldn't figure it out from the flashbacks?
I think Colin wanted to explore his sexuality and was overwhelmed by having someone show him the attention he craved. I also think he was raped in the last scene with the son of the landlady, as in, he wanted consensual sex, but was forced into accepting something that was clearly painful.
AndreaMarteau · 06/02/2021 16:45

I really don't understand where people are getting this from. The landlady's son doesn't treat him well (as it seems he has internalised homophobia, hence the use of 'bender' when he's shagging Collin) but as I pointed out upthread, Colin clearly squeezes the son's arse during oral, and shouts 'Yes!' when they're having sex.

It's not a loving relationship but there's no suggestion of rape to me.

AndreaMarteau · 06/02/2021 16:47

Also, Colin makes it clear to the landlady's son that he'll be staying in the house when the parents go to 'ciinema club'. If he was going to be alone in the house with the son who was raping him, surely Colin would find somewhere else to be?

TheFirstMrsDV · 06/02/2021 20:21

It wasn't rape. It was loveless sex. Colin asked if the mum and dad were out every Thursday and then said he would always be at home.

LyraShaeLilly · 06/02/2021 20:44

@morninglive

Glad its not just me. I feel there was definitely some taking advantage of Colin's inexperience

Inspirationpending · 06/02/2021 21:42

Such an informative thread.
Just finished episode 3, absolutely broke me
Colins mum was just lovely Sad

morninglive · 06/02/2021 22:15

@LyraShaeLilly. I think poor Colin enjoyed the consensual side of sex and invited it, but I think the final scene where he is infected, clearly isn’t pleasurable. I think it’s telling that Colin doesn’t go on to have sex with anyone else. Makes me think even more he was raped and was desperate to get away from those digs to ensure it didn’t happen again.

Just because you enjoy and encourage oral and masturbatory sex, doesn’t mean you enjoy anal intercourse. I think definite coercion by that awful bully.

AndreaMarteau · 06/02/2021 22:27

Eh? He was moaning and shouted 'Yes!' when they were having anal sex. He sounded and looked very much like he was enjoying it.

It seems like he moved to the Pink Palace because he saw them enjoying an out gay lifestyle where everyone was living their lives free of restraint, unlike the landlady's son.

allycat4 · 06/02/2021 22:32

Agree, I think Colin's clearly enjoying the sex - big happy "oh yes!!" from what I recall. Agreed, the guy was vile as a result of internalised homophobia, but that's not the same as raping him.

NeedWineNow · 06/02/2021 23:23

We recorded 3 last night and have just binge watched that, 4 and 5. Both me and DH cried when Colin died and also the end. One of the best, most thought provoking series we've watched in a long time. DH just said he feels absolutely drained.

sailonsilvergirls · 07/02/2021 07:37

Yes Colin was clearly a willing participant. Sometimes you can be a willing participant in relationships that have a power imbalance that clearly isn't good for you.

ageingdisgracefully · 07/02/2021 09:12

I remember it all pretty well. As far as I can see, the KH character's reaction was typical for a woman of her time and in her situation. I thought Jill's attitude to her in the closing minutes was harsh.

I can't remember any outrage about AIDS at the time, as it was deemed to affect promiscuous gay men and not a threat to the population at large. I can't remember much sympathy tbh.
The outrage came when straight people were infected by blood transfusions etc, and there was shock when Rock Hudson died (mainly because he'd been outed as gay).

Twizbe · 07/02/2021 10:20

Colin was a very sweet character. We as an audience almost want to believe that he was an 'innocent victim' of the disease. 'We' want to believe he was raped because that means he didn't do anything to deserve his infection.

Ashleys63 · 07/02/2021 10:25

Jill did seem to devote her life to her gay male friends - I wonder why?
I mean, she didn't have to, she obviously got a lot out of looking after them ( so to speak ) I'm sure if she packed her bags and said 'I'm off' they would have understood and sent her off with a cheery wave.

AndreaMarteau · 07/02/2021 10:28

@Twizbe

I know exactly what you mean when you say that. But that's buying into the attitudes that were around back in the 80's. It's the Chris Morris sketch of 'good AIDS' and 'bad AIDS'. 'Good AIDS' were haemophiliacs and 'bad AIDS' were gays and drug users. Like some victims were more worthy of sympathy.

And it seems like some people still can't get out of that mindset Confused Colin couldn't possibly be a willing participant in rough, consensual sex, because he was so sweet and lovely and didn't 'deserve' to get AIDS.
