I do love watching the unrealistic people on Wanted Down Under.

Today's is classic. Mum with 4 Primary school age kids and a same-sex partner. Mum has always had a dream about living in Oz. Partner fairly meh about the whole thing.

The father of the kids appears to be very hands-on, very involved. Kids regularly expressing "missing Dad". Yet mum soldiers on with her selfish dream?

I've just posted stated a thread saying the same thing! How could the mum be so selfish.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/01/2021 11:25

Feel really sorry for the dad.

BaublesAndBawbags · 07/01/2021 11:26

Does Mum not just fancy a few weeks' holiday in Oz paid for by the BBC, even if she risks looking like a selfish cow in the final edit?

RaspberryCoulis · 07/01/2021 11:26

Completely. The dad has no say that his ex hoiks his 4 kids to the other side of the world?

I love when they do the follow up episodes, most of them who voted yes to go are still in the UK!

Ilikewinter · 07/01/2021 11:29

Ah just flicked over, see it is a 'revisited' prgramme and yep they are still in the UK! .....not seen the rest of the programme though

Toddlerteaplease · 07/01/2021 11:30

"Dad will come over all the time" err I doubt it.

Ilikewinter · 07/01/2021 11:31

......and they are living in Australia so that proves me completely wrong!! ...... oh well im off to make an early lunch 🙈

Toddlerteaplease · 07/01/2021 11:33

Dad gets seriously ill and mum uses the older son as emotional support. More and more selfish!

LIZS · 07/01/2021 11:35

Omg the poor kids Sad what a sad outcome

Toddlerteaplease · 07/01/2021 11:36

Can't believe they made a seriously ill person fly round the world. I'm Shock

Ilikewinter · 07/01/2021 11:37

Omg how sad, dad must have felt so ill yet dragged himself to the other side of the world to spend his last days with his kids

Toddlerteaplease · 07/01/2021 11:40

And the wife can't even use her teaching qualification.

Nitpickpicnic · 07/01/2021 11:47

Slightly confused Aussie here... can anyone on this thread be bothered to tell me (and maybe other aussies?) what this program is generally about? The premise? Always fascinated to see what programs we spawn for overseas markets, tells us so much about how the world sees us!

Thanks in advance, UK friends. Smile

Toddlerteaplease · 07/01/2021 11:49

Families who think they want to move to Australia spend a week there to see if they really want to move. They check out jobs and houses and have a trip to the local zoo. Etc

CarrieCat · 07/01/2021 11:52

I don't think it reflects on Aussies at all, only the families. It's about Brits deciding whether to relocate to Australia or stay put.

CarrieCat · 07/01/2021 11:53

I saw the original but not the revisited one. Sounds really sad

june2007 · 07/01/2021 12:04

A lot of the time they can,t move because of one reason or another but some do. I supose if you are genuinly interested it gives an opportunity to really look at the type of houses available in that area your looking at but if I look at houses and prices around Birmingham it doesnt give me the slightest idea about Inverness, or Snowdonia, or cornwall does it.?

sproutburger · 07/01/2021 12:06

@Nitpickpicnic basically a UK family is thinking of moving to Oz, expecting that they will be able to afford something off Neighbours unlike their grotty little terrace in some damp pommy shithole. They also want a more relaxed lifestyle, large garden, more time for the kids, more money etc which they think they'll get in Australia. So the tv producers fly them out there for a week or something to see what their lives would be like there, including a day doing their normal jobs here. They usually find:
-oz is bloody expensive
-they can only afford a slightly pokey house in the burbs miles from anywhere

  • they're on the other side of the world from their families. Who'd a thunk it! (cue video of tearful elderly parents saying "we'll miss you terribly but don't let us hold you back". All the kids and mum start howling)
-one of them will need to completely retrain as Oz doesn't need their particular trade
  • dad hates the idea because his mum is 92 and he'll probs never see her again, he'll miss all his footy mates and his brother who he sees every week, he earns a good wage as a plasterer and he is quite content where he is. he's only going along with it to keep his wife happy

at the end of the show they have to decide whether they want to move or not. 2 kids say yes because they met a koala, sullen teenager misses her mates so says no, mum is kind of ambivalent because she didn't realise that hairdressing doesn't pay $200 per hour in Adelaide and cheese costs a bomb. Dad still playing nicely but says no.

They don't move and had no intention of doing so really, but had a sunny holiday at the expense of the programme.

I stereotype slightly but you get the gist! I love the show btw!

KimKsButt · 07/01/2021 12:07

Oh my life I’m glad I didn’t watch this. The blurb put me off because it sounded so selfish

ginghamtablecloths · 07/01/2021 12:12

I find it rather sad sometimes. The grass isn't greener elsewhere - it's just different. The sight of heartbroken grandparents who try to suppress their tears at being apart from their families for the sake of one person's 'dream' is quite telling. It wouldn't be quite so bad if it was mainland Europe but the other side of the world is so far away and communicating by screen is no substitute.

YesIDoLoveCrisps · 07/01/2021 12:31

They film the elderly, poorly grandma crying. Sobbing because she raised her grandson from a baby alone as everyone else abandoned him or died in a horrific way. She gave up everything to raise him and loves him more than life itself. But he’s like hmmmmm it’s sunnier in Australia so fuck you grandma.

RaspberryCoulis · 07/01/2021 12:49

Exactly. Dad clearly knew he was dying but because his selfish ex fancied a new start he died in a foreign country?

Just awful. Those poor kids.

Oh and agree there is no reflection of comment on Aussies. In fact, Aussies don't ever feature. Sometimes in the work segment if they can't find a uk expat to interview.

Australia always looks amazing. It's the stupid British people who think they're going to quadruple their salary, work 20 hours a week and afford a mahoosive house which we laugh at.
