Series that have run their course

I am thinking of series which used to be great, but have been on for so long that they have become hackneyed. There are a number of these, but I am particularly thinking of Grey's Anatomy. This used to be a top class series, but some time ago lost it's gloss, becoming toe curlingly trite and dull to the extent that it would not be out of place on the Hallmark Channel. IMO it should have been put to bed about five series back. Why are some originally fine series allowed to become parodies of themselves?

I agree with most of these but I physically need strictly to get me to Christmas especially this year

SpectralPlot · 14/11/2020 10:04

jojo I still hear that theme tune in my head when I read any Roman history Blush.

WellTidy · 14/11/2020 10:12

Homeland. I watched until the very end, but the first three series were absolutely amazing.

GCAcademic · 14/11/2020 11:08

All of the soaps. Are people really still watching this hackneyed, formulaic drivel?

Appears they do....I agree with you though total rubbish

totally agree. it should have stopped when brody died.
tofuschnitzel · 14/11/2020 12:08

I stuck with The Walking Dead for so long, but I think it was around early season 9 when I realised I just didn't care anymore. I read episode recaps for a bit, but stopped watching the episodes completely. It's a shame as it was a good series for quite a while, and it still gets good ratings.

Redcrayons · 14/11/2020 12:10

All the American ones, they just don’t know when to stop.

Stellaris22 · 14/11/2020 12:12

I absolutely love Supernatural (especially the Dean and Castiel relationship) but sadly I agree that it should have ended by now.

Gogglebox should have ended, I guess it's cheap to make but it's boring and repetitive now (plus some of the people are downright offensive and unpleasant).

Stellaris22 · 14/11/2020 12:13

Oh, and all the 'talent' shows like the voice, britains got talent etc. Yawn.

This is why I watch Korean tv now. 16 hour long episodes. Every single show has a proper, well thought out ending. They're like tv books.
Fishfingersandwichplease · 14/11/2020 12:18

Benidorm!

mum2jakie · 14/11/2020 12:18

Modern Family went on for at least two series past its expiry date. The first few series are amazing and can be watched over and over again.

Fishfingersandwichplease · 14/11/2020 12:22

Totally agree with pp who said Not Going Out. After the kids came along it wasn't funny at all.

LadyCatStark · 14/11/2020 12:23

Line of Duty. They really need a new storyline now. I really don’t care who H is anymore and I’m sick of hearing the words (well letters) OCG.

FippertyGibbett · 14/11/2020 12:26

I would like Strictly to go back to the actual dancing rules of ballroom/Latin. They get away with bad footwork because their outfit looks good and they’re popular.

FippertyGibbett · 14/11/2020 12:28

NCIS used to be good at first, then it became repetitive.

jambeforeclottedcream · 14/11/2020 13:05

I know it's not on this year because of covid but the apprentice has past it's sell by date.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 14/11/2020 13:09

In all honesty The Wire and Breaking Bad are the only major series I can think of that ended strongly and at the right time.

In most cases they just keep milking it because the money doesn't come in until contracts are being renewed.

woodhill · 14/11/2020 13:32

I'm a celebrity possibly?

midsomermurderess · 14/11/2020 14:09

Agatha Raisin. It pains me to say, it but most recent series feels tired and oddly crude.

PuppyMonkey · 14/11/2020 14:18

Came on here to say Line of Duty too - the first three series were superb but after that, just so unnecessarily complicated and up its own arse.

Agree with lots of others here too. Can I also add Coronation Street? No way will they stop it but when I think back to the glory days of the 70s and compare it to the shitfest it is now, it makes me so sad.

PurpleDaisies · 14/11/2020 14:22

I agree with so many of these. I stopped watching Greys a while ago because it went really stupid. Homeland we ditched after a couple of series. Killing Eve was rubbish after series one. House and CSI (all of them) should have ended at least a series before they did and when Lee and Lucy got together, Not Going Out just died for me. I’m not sure what they’re doing with Law and Order SVU now.

Currently ones in need of putting out of their misery are Bake Off, Have I Got News For You and any structured reality show.

I wish they would make more Fleabag.

PurpleDaisies · 14/11/2020 14:27

@squashyhat

As a huge West Wing fan I really hope they never reboot it. A lot of fans think it should have stopped after Aaron Sorkin left but to my mind the 7 series (2 presidential terms) was perfect and wrapped up very satisfyingly.
Yes! Season five was a bit duff but season six and seven were great. They really did tie it all up very well.

I am avoiding a reboot, particularly because of how some of them (Bradley Whitford) have aged. It makes me feel old.
