Is anyone else watching?

yy superoz, I think it was extra flagging up how perilous Will's world is?

AaronPurr · 18/11/2020 19:18

Confession time - I haven't read the books

I definitely recommend doing so, you won't regret it. -Although every time I reread, the ending...

Thimbleberries · 18/11/2020 19:28

yes I enjoyed this week's much more than the first as well. I'd sort of lost touch with what was happening, but I could follow this one better.

the sets are amazing.

I love Ruth Wilson's hair, always.

Mary was great!

Cittegazze was also how I pictured it, almost exactly.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 18/11/2020 19:28

I thought Will being close to puberty was mentioned in the book.

Damn. I’ll have to reread ....

CountFosco · 18/11/2020 19:37

Watching with DD1. I'm loving it so much. Agree Will is wonderful and Cittagazze looked perfect.

AngeloMysterioso · 18/11/2020 21:47

I haven’t read the books either... I saw the film adaptation when it came out so I had a very vague idea of what was going to happen in season 1 but from here on I haven’t a clue!

Stradivari · 20/11/2020 13:30

We could always do a read-along thread of HDM, always good fun!

JayAlfredPrufrock · 20/11/2020 19:41

I’m waiting for the third book in the Secret Commonwealth

AaronPurr · 20/11/2020 20:42

@JayAlfredPrufrock

I’m waiting for the third book in the Secret Commonwealth
I'm hoping it's better than the 2nd, as I really didn't enjoy the book of dust.

Here we go

Is that the kitchen from Outnumbered??

AaronPurr · 22/11/2020 21:04

Another great episode. However, I couldn't read what was on the note the barmaid gave to Marisa, anyone manage to decipher it?

GrishainDisguise · 22/11/2020 21:20

This was a very short episode.

GrishainDisguise · 22/11/2020 21:22

The note says:

"Mrs Coulter,

I know where Lyra is.

Boreal"

Thimbleberries · 22/11/2020 21:28

wow, how did you read that? I was wondering what it said.

I thought Lyra was looking a lot more physically grown-up in this one, and yet it's Will that they keep saying will be at risk of the spectres.

GrishainDisguise · 22/11/2020 21:34

I went back and checked the note on the iplayer Blush in my defence this is what I thought it was anyway.

CountFosco · 22/11/2020 21:41

That conversation between Mrs Coulter and Lee didn't happen in the book did it? I think it made sense of their motivations so was happy with it but I feel like we are seeing things we don't see in the book.

EllieQ · 22/11/2020 23:24

Yes, that scene wasn’t in the book, but didn’t feel out of place/out of character to me. I’m really impressed with this adaptation so far.

I couldn’t read the Mrs Coulter’s note at all, and had to check on iPlayer on my phone afterwards.

The scene with Pan watching Paddington made me laugh!

FlibbertyGiblets · 23/11/2020 10:44

The episode flew by, so engrossing .Another one had to re-read the note here.

It Is all very well done. The costumes are outstanding.

PaddyF0dder · 23/11/2020 12:31

I love this show.

But this season is feeling a bit padded-out. Get to the knife already!

And I agree with the above poster - Mary Malone is perfect. She was my favourite character in the books (until Malcolm Polsted).

Olderbutnotmuchwiser · 23/11/2020 12:40

I adore the opening titles. I see a double helix, one world reflected in another, multiple worlds with different physical properties, (the stairs), Lyra as the epicentre, endless worlds compressed like geologic rocks, and the whole compressed into lines, which further compress. I don't explain it very well, but to me it's pretty impressive.

The opening titles are very well done. I liked the way there were some changes from season 1 - the details of the knife, and adding Cittegazze (sp?) to the layered worlds. You also see Lyra through the amber spyglass, the machine that Mary is using to analyse the dark matter/ dust, and I realised yesterday that the lines at the end could be the lines from the dark matter/ dust analysis.
CountFosco · 23/11/2020 13:01

Yeah, I've been impressed. The changes they have made are for reasonable story telling reasons but they are true to the story. Like the film of The English Patient, it has added to my enjoyment of the book.

Spoiler (ish) for those who have not read The Secret Commonwealth. In the discussions on here about that book someone speculated that the thing we learnt about some people and their dæmon in that book might be true of Mrs Coulter and her dæmon so I've been looking for signs of that in this adaptation.

Olderbutnotmuchwiser · 23/11/2020 13:06

I'm seeing more and more in the titles now.

poorbuthappy · 23/11/2020 13:06

Its this sort of adaption I pay my licence fee for.
