Also, did Pru say she is 80 earlier in? Is she really?!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 10/11/2020 21:13

Sorry to lose Marc, though.

He had a bad week.

kidscreatemess · 10/11/2020 21:13

...The handshake is a shit show anyway though. Why does Hollywood get an extra say in judging?

kursaalflyer · 10/11/2020 21:14

It's annoying we didn't see her do the poppy. It was stunning

She is. I hope I'm as energetic and sharp minded as her when I'm 80.

I couldn't believe that either - I said so to Mr Schaden. She doesn't seem remotely that age - not just her skin, bt her posture - everything suggests at least a10 years younger woman
thegirlwithkaleidoscopeeyes · 10/11/2020 21:15

Shock well my fast is well and truly flabbered!!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 10/11/2020 21:16

Bright colours and loads of dosh obviously keep you young!

ChessieFL · 10/11/2020 21:16

They did show Hermine doing the poppy - she had a wide flat tool to inject in the petals.

tasmaniandevilchaser · 10/11/2020 21:18

What's next week's theme? The DC we're shouting and I missed what they said. ..

I saw that but if I did it, it would just be a messy blob. The technique was very skilled.

I don't think they said.
ChessieFL · 10/11/2020 21:21

No theme as it’s the semi final.

dementedma · 10/11/2020 21:27

Shame to see Marc go but also glad Peter survived. Dave’s jelly was technically beautiful but Hermine’s was out of this world!

kursaalflyer · 10/11/2020 21:45

Lol I must have been writing a post at the time Hermine did the poppy, I completely missed it! Shock

merryhouse · 10/11/2020 22:20

My Good Housekeeping book says to steam Pond Pudding for four hours...

"they don't make Christmas puddings" was on my lips too Grin

Nooooooo Marc! still, he's been wobbly for some time

haggisaggis · 10/11/2020 22:29

First time I’ve been close to switching off before the end. They needed more time for the technical. If one or 2 messed up fair enough but for all of them to mess it up shows the issue was with the time limit.

Sadik · 10/11/2020 22:35

I think the problem with the technical was that none of them had made a steamed suet pudding before - as well as faffing with the pastry they were even struggling with doing the foil lid with a pleat which I'd have thought was a trivially basic technique. As Pru said, it's probably an age thing. I've made Sussex Pond pudding in various incarnations & would think of it as a pretty easy & showy thing to do with the key in a limited time situation being to get it on to steam ASAP. I prefer an Apple Hat though - similar but packed with sliced cooking apple & lemon juice/rind mixed in with the butter & sugar - haven't made one for years, but it's just gone on the list for the next wet weekend!

ilovecardigans · 10/11/2020 23:07

Hermine is killing it this week! That showstopper was stunning. Go girl!!

Sorry to see Marc go. Lovely man and a fine baker.

CherryValanc · 10/11/2020 23:24

What's the story with Peter and Christmas?

When he grows up he's either going to work in a all year Christmas shop or be an Elf!!

SequinsandStiIettos · 11/11/2020 05:51

Or it's all a cunning ruse to be invited to go on the Xmas bake-off special sooner rather than later! Wink Grin

SequinsandStiIettos · 11/11/2020 05:53

Or a festive book? Pete's Xmas Treats.
He a missed a trick there not using Pete as a nn.
Hermine to win for me although from the remaining four, I think I like Laura the best. I can relate to her mini-breakdowns! Grin

CaptainMyCaptain · 11/11/2020 08:01

I think it must be an age thing. I learned the techniques for suet pastry and steamed puddings at school in the late 60s/early 70s and it's really easy stuff compared to all the fancy work they do on Bake Off.

CaptainMyCaptain · 11/11/2020 08:05

If anyone is interested in knowing why traditional British cookery is so full of steamed puddings and the like, as opposed to patisserie, they should read Ruth Goodman's The Domestic Revolution. It's about Britain's relatively early adoption of coal as fuel for cooking and heating and how it affected our diet and the way our homes are built and decorated.

IntermittentParps · 11/11/2020 08:51

They were given ages for the technical. The issue was that none of them knew how long to steam the puddings for. That pudding sounds disgusting anyway though. I loved Hermine's face when she was making it Grin

Marc is such a nice guy. I thought Peter should have gone, but then Peter annoys me. His showstopper was rubbish.

I loved Dave's – the colours and the structure within the jelly bit. Hermine's was exquisite.
Laura really should have gone by now. She's slapdash and makes too many mistakes.
I'm still Team Dave.
