Has anyone else watched this since it dropped on the 23rd? I saw the first hour or so last night and that was brilliant. I love anything to do with Sherlock Holmes. Enola is his younger sister. I can see sequels coming after this one.

Enola seems absolutely uninterested in romance/marriage, and I'd love to see more of a brother-sister bond between her and Sherlock

Absolutely. So many films are ruined by a determination that the two leads will form a romantic relationship, however unmatched or lacking in chemistry they may be. I'd love to see films where they form a great friendship, or familial bonds are repaired/explored.

I also didn't quite get the whole thing with the headmistress and Mycroft. I was hoping that would be explored a bit as something slightly more interesting!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 09/10/2020 21:18

I've just watched. Why did the Headmistress occasionally slip into an American accent?

I agree the plot seemed to disappear a bit (what was H B-C thinking of blowing up?), and then reappear, but I did enjoy it over all.

MBB is a fantastical actress, and like somebody else said, nice to see a teen played by a teen. I only had one teeny complaint —the way she spoke the rest of the time, every time she pronounced "new" as "noo" it completely broke the Victorian feel for me.

I wish we'd seen a few more of her charicatures, I loved those.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 09/10/2020 21:24

I didn't think she slipped into an America accent, there was a slight Cork twang now and then which is where Fiona Shaw is from.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 09/10/2020 21:35

Oh, thank you BANS.

She'd been sounding very RP, and then there was a point where she said "answer" with a very obvious "ann" rather than the "arn" I was expecting, then a bit of a twang again later on. I thought it was intentional, but couldn't work out why! Your explanation makes more sense.

Only just seen this thread, we watched it a couple of weeks ago and enjoyed it.

I have to say though the lasting impression is Henry Cavill as Sherlock - bloody perfect casting.

I watched today and agree it was over long. Would work much better as a series.

JamminDoughnuts · 11/10/2020 06:56

i thought Fiona Shaw was perhaps being Scottish
i enjoyed it
it was long and i watched it in two parts

JamminDoughnuts · 11/10/2020 06:57

Watched it with the family on Friday. Of all of us dh enjoyed it the most and dd1 (16) the least. Overall I thought it was enjoyable but overlong. It’s worth it for that adult women actors who are all superb. Sets and costume design are all great too.
I cannot bloody stand storyline that revolve around parents abandoning their children to protect them though. Fuck’s sake not even one single letter to explain why you’ve fucked off out of your kid’s life without warning? Drives me crazy.

I'm looking forward to the sequel (now confirmed by Netflix!) Grin
