Has anyone else watched this since it dropped on the 23rd? I saw the first hour or so last night and that was brilliant. I love anything to do with Sherlock Holmes. Enola is his younger sister. I can see sequels coming after this one.

Just watched it with my 6yr old DD. We really enjoyed it. She asked lots of interesting questions so she was definitely concentrating. Would love a series.

MrsKappa · 26/09/2020 23:56

We watched it tonight with 9 and 11 year old DS's and they absolutely loved it. 11 year old DS was astounded that women lived such a life in those days so it was a good way to discuss these things too Smile

WitchWife · 27/09/2020 00:00

It was great! Quite a bit of violence but nothing you wouldn’t find in a normal children’s action/adventure. Maybe it seems more shocking somehow because it’s a girl involved? I mean Home Alone for example is much grimmer!!

Bellabluea · 27/09/2020 00:03

I watched it with my 9 and 10 year old daughters and we absolutely loved it too. Such a positive message for my daughters!
Have to say I also watched stranger things with them so the fact that Millie was in it was a definite draw as we’re huge fans.

Frenchfancy · 27/09/2020 06:55

Watched it last night and loved it. I hope there is a sequel.

Star555 · 27/09/2020 15:39

I loved watching Enola Holmes! I just enjoyed it for its own sake and considered it to be an entirely different set of characters of the real Sherlock Holmes (I am a huge fan of Arthur Conan Doyle's original work) who just happened to have the same names.

I don't want Enola to get romantically involved with Tewksbury or anyone else, full stop. She even yells "I don't want a husband!" at one point. I would love to see more brother-sister close moments between Enola and Sherlock. I was really disappointed that there was no hug between them...I feel like they could become even closer from now on in a strong, platonic, fraternal way since Enola will be Sherlock's ward. They could become close colleagues, confidants and soulmates, since neither is interested in being conventional and getting married.

Anyone agree with me?

Abraid2 · 27/09/2020 15:42

It could have been twenty minutes shorter but we really enjoyed it last night. Just the right kind of thing for these rather grim times.

My sister told me about this last night. I'm horrified. Holmes does not have a sister!!!!!! I'm a total Holmes purist and will only watch the Jeremy Brett version!

Watched this last night with 12 year old dd, we enjoyed it but dd kept on shouting: “Stop breaking the fourth wall!!” at the tv. I’ve got to agree, it was a bit on the nose and happened a bit too much. She also commented that the mother storyline was forgotten about in the middle and then tied up at the end too quickly. Great cast though would love to have seen Helena Bonham Carter do more.

GuyFawkesDay · 27/09/2020 23:12

Apparently MBB is a right royal PITA to work with

Sam Claflin is good, Henry Cavill was too, and both nice blokes. And HB-C is the dogs dangles, and from what I hear very funny and lovely too.

Dunnowhat2do · 28/09/2020 04:22

@ittooshallpass I'm not sure, something about her doesn't sit well with me. Maybe it is the fact she tries too hard to hang out with people twice her age. Just been a teenager FFS, enjoy being young instead of hanging out with 30-somethings.

I did end up watching it and I have to say she is a good actor however it did go on a bit and lost the way a little. Very pretty girl too, doesn't need all the make up she puts on when I see her pics, she has a natural beautiful.

For anyone whose children enjoyed the movie, there is a series of books about Enola Holmes' adventures. I think they are aimed at pre-teen.

mizu · 29/09/2020 07:22

Watched on Saturday night with 2 teen DDs and we loved it. What's not to love with such great actors. Love Fiona Shaw and Helena Bonham Carter and we are Stranger Things fans too.

The girls loved spotting people, the giantess from Harry Potter, Jane from Outnumbered, Aunt Petunia from HP too. It was fun.

IntermittentParps · 29/09/2020 09:34

This almost sounds worth watching for Frances de la Tour and Fiona Shaw, but I think the trailer looks a bit hearty and toe-curling in a very BBC family-film way.
I also thought at first it was a series, which I'd be much happier to watch than to sit down for a whole film.

Don't mind the idea of Sherlock Holmes having a sister per se, though.

ittooshallpass · 29/09/2020 16:28

What a disappointing comment. The film had such a strong positive message for girls and then 'boom' MBB just has to be brought back down to size.

Can't we just congratulate her on a job well done for now?

She's 16! She's going to make mistakes and piss people off, but can't we just applaud the messages she is trying to give our daughters?

GuyFawkesDay · 29/09/2020 21:00

I speak as someone with knowledge of the film industry.

You can be 16, give a great message and not be rude to crew and other cast members 🤷‍♀️

LadyIronDragon · 03/10/2020 22:49

Bit late to this as only just managed to watch it, but was really disappointed. Loved MBB in Stranger Things and was really looking forward to this, but found the dialogue clunky and false and acting incredibly wooden. It was utterly cringe. I wasn't a fan of the romantic storyline either, there was no chemistry between them other than as friends.

I'm amazed to see so many good reviews of it on jete. Although I probably would have liked it as a teen.

middleager · 03/10/2020 22:53

I did not enjoy this. It was a children's film (I didn't realise) in the style of last Chrisrmas' Wurzel Gummage series, it felt, and ridiculously far fetched.

KindKylie · 03/10/2020 22:57

My dds loved it but the 9 yr old has commented on the drowning scene and 'the bowler hat man' a few times so I think some caution is needed with more sensitive dc.

We watched as a family and really enjoyed it and look forward to the series.

I think they've missed a trick not having the books available in the UK.

Shortncurly · 03/10/2020 23:20

Put off by adenoidal delivery of MBB's lines

LadyIronDragon · 04/10/2020 08:43

@KindKylie agree, I think below 10 could be a bit scared by some of the violence and themes.

adagio · 04/10/2020 08:56

I watched it with my DH and really enjoyed it

Star555 · 04/10/2020 19:10

I wasn't a fan of the romantic storyline either, there was no chemistry between them other than as friends.

@LadyIronDragon I completely agree. As I wrote above, Enola seems absolutely uninterested in romance/marriage, and I'd love to see more of a brother-sister bond between her and Sherlock.

HereBeFuckery · 04/10/2020 19:19

I disliked it. I wouldn't say I hated it, as I watched it through, but it was very unengaging, and the lines were clunky as a wooden box full of marbles. HB-C was wasted! She spoke in fridge magnet cliches!
And the infant love interest needed a good meal. He was v irritatingly wafty.
