Has anyone else watched this since it dropped on the 23rd? I saw the first hour or so last night and that was brilliant. I love anything to do with Sherlock Holmes. Enola is his younger sister. I can see sequels coming after this one.

My teens (16 and 15) thought it was utter bilge!

MintyIguana · 26/09/2020 21:07

I just watched it with DDs 11 and nearly 9. Great fun. Needed to pause occasionally for explanations.

JunoJigglewick · 26/09/2020 21:07

I enjoyed it. Originally watched it for Henry Cavill but thought MBB as Enola was great and I always love Helena Bonham Carter. Great supporting cast of strong women too.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 26/09/2020 21:08

I always feel quite uncomfortable with breaking the 4th wall, Milly Bobby Brown does it as very well, but I still don't like it. I did think that it was incredibly well cast, Henry Cavill was great in it and it was a delight to see Frances de la Tour, I haven't seen her in anything for ages.

The character was still only 16 by the end of the film so I think fair enough to let the attraction simmer gently and not go any further.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 26/09/2020 21:10

I did think that it was quite refreshing to see teenagers played by actual teenagers, they generally seem to cast people in their 20s.

GingerBeverage · 26/09/2020 21:15

MBB also exec produced, so I'd guess her team were actively looking for something like this to build up her range. Very canny, and good to see a young woman not being manipulated by the Hollywood machine.

StormBaby · 26/09/2020 21:18

It held all of our attention here, even my youngest with no interest in movies whatsoever loved it.

Norightorwronganswer · 26/09/2020 21:20

Ok for kids? I thought it was a kids film when I saw the ad then I was sure it said it was an 18!!

pinkbalconyrailing · 26/09/2020 21:22

imo it's for pre-teens/teens.
there is some violence, some of it quite brutal.

MintyIguana · 26/09/2020 21:25

My almost 9 year old was fine with it but probably best for pre teens.

Mynameisrow · 26/09/2020 21:25

It’s age rating is a 12.

I thought it was really good. The cast was brilliant. Millie has a bright future ahead. I thought it was okay for kids, some fight scenes but nothing over the top.

I thought the breaking the fourth wall worked in this film, I usually don’t care for it, but it fit with the feel of the film.

Bunkumum · 26/09/2020 21:57

Oh my goodness I forgot to mention Sherlock. I’d like a spin off with Henry Cavill...he’s rather gorgeous.

duletty · 26/09/2020 22:04

11 year old liked it..teenagers slunk away after a few minutes

GCAcademic · 26/09/2020 22:05

Henry Cavill was very easy on the eye. The film is great fun. Even grumpy old DH enjoyed it. We watched without kids.

TheDrsDocMartens · 26/09/2020 22:08

We watched it before we show the kids. I can see dd3 loving it, she’s very definitely strong and will appreciate the female characters.

TempestHayes · 26/09/2020 22:14

For those thinking of watching with kids, there's a rather hefty blow to the head in the final half hour which may or may not alarm some younger or more sensitive kids.

Norightorwronganswer · 26/09/2020 22:18

Thanks for the warnings. My eldest is a bit sensitive so will give it a miss!

Dunnowhat2do · 26/09/2020 22:37

I saw a snippet of the trailer a few weeks ago and it was Millie Bobbie Brown (who I cant stand!!!) So switched over. Then she was doing some PR with Helena Bonham Carter on BBC breakfast when I was getting the kids ready for school and she said she produced it....she's 16! I was actually quite amazed given how annoying I find her! But it looked good so I may give it a go tomorrow.

Plus the other cast members are really strong- Henry Cavill and the guy from the Hunger Games are in it too.

SugarMiceInTheRain · 26/09/2020 22:40

We watched it this evening with my 12 and 14 year old boys. All enjoyed it. Millie Bobby Brown was brilliant as the lead. And yes, I loved all the strong female characters in it.

Doryhunky · 26/09/2020 22:50

There is attempted drowning strangling and shooting so quite violent.

HasaDigaEebowai · 26/09/2020 23:05

We watched it last night with 15 yo ds1 and 13yo ds2. Dh and I enjoyed it, teens stayed til the end but said it was ok. Ds1 commented that with the blow to the head and the water scene he was surprised it managed to get a 12 rating.

cctvrec · 26/09/2020 23:22

Helena Bonham Carter is in it. What more reason do I need to watch it? Seriously, there's nothing I don't absolutely love her in.

GCAcademic · 26/09/2020 23:40

And Fiona Shaw!

ittooshallpass · 26/09/2020 23:42

@Dunnowhat2do why do you dislike MBB so much - she's an excellent actor?!

Yes, some of her interviews for Stranger Things were a bit cringey but she's very young, so she's allowed to be. She's very talented... it's great to see a strong British female actor. We've had to put up with the likes of Keira Knightly for so long (who cannot act) I think MBB is a breath of fresh air.

Borington · 26/09/2020 23:48

It was a film aimed at children/young adults, surely? We watched it last night.
