Blimey mrssunshinexxx that's a big bump you have there Smile.
Unfortunately I won't watch it as as I can't stand Ricky Gervais. I feel his comedy is quite often laughing at people but not in a good natured way, the Golden Globes Awards speech being one example. But that's just my opinion. and don't get me started on Rowan Atkinson

smallandimperfectlyformed · 24/10/2020 17:27

I love Derek! It's kinder than I thought it would have been, when I saw the adverts for it on channel 4 years ago I thought it looked like he was mocking people with learning disabilities. Am happy to admit that I was totally wrong!

TheQueef · 24/10/2020 17:29

It makes me cry.
I can't watch Gervais be Gervais but I think he nailed Derek.
The cast are fabulous and the pace just right.
I love it.

annonymousse · 24/10/2020 17:33

I loved it. Didn't watch it for ages as I'm not keen on Ricky gervaise brand of humour but thought it was beautifully done. Was expecting cheap laughs but not at all.

TheoriginalLEM · 24/10/2020 17:35

I cannot stand ricky gervais but i loved derek. Absolutely spot on. I loved the manager too.

mrssunshinexxx · 24/10/2020 20:02

Ah so glad others have enjoyed. I love ricky gervais in anything especially afterlife but can see thT he is abit like marmite.
There's not many tv programs that can make me sob and laugh it's really quite good

I loved it all except the one with the dog. Near finished me off.

I didn’t watch it for ages because in the clip it looked like he was taking the piss. I was very wrong. It was beautiful, sad, touching and hilarious in equal measure.

mrssunshinexxx · 24/10/2020 23:46

@AllAboutTheMonet it really was x

Everyone loves Derek and says how brilliant he is and how kind he is and yet we are never shown how brilliant and kind he is. He just hangs around with a pervert and a depressed handyman, gurning and explaining to the camera what's going on.

It strikes me that the whole series was created by Gervais purely because he got a lot of stick for taking the piss out of people with learning disabilities in one of his "stand up" shows and this is his way of saying "how can I be against the disableds when I'm so good at playing a nice disabled in this show what I wrote, directed and starred in?"

TheQueef · 26/10/2020 13:27

@blightyear I hadn't considered that.
I had some tics when I was younger and my speech was a little odd so Derek hit home for me.
I hope it wasn't self serving.

cushioncovers · 26/10/2020 18:48

Love it. It's so clever how it can make you laugh, cry and cringe all in one episode

mrssunshinexxx · 26/10/2020 20:11

@cushioncovers couldn't agree more
