Anyone else looking forward to this? Starts tonight at 9pm.

OP posts:
Oblomov20 · 13/09/2020 22:33

Liked seeing Maimie McCoy, Lady de winter, from 3 musketeers, in episode 2.

Maireas · 14/09/2020 01:12

Siegfried was only a few years older than James. It would make sense if his younger brother was still a student. It was nice seeing Mamie McCoy!

Purplekitchen · 14/09/2020 01:34

Mrs Hall has far too prominent a role for me. She's too familiar with the men and I don't recall anything about her son in the books or the 1st series. She shouldn't be hugging Tristan or sitting down to drink tea with Siegfried.
I've been rewatching some of the original series on YouTube and much prefer it.
Did like seeing Neville Longbottom as Helen's admirer though.

Maireas · 14/09/2020 07:21

Was that Neville Longbottom? He looks different! You're right about Mrs Hall. She should be off to her room to listen to the wireless, not playing board games with the men.

IntermittentParps · 14/09/2020 09:02

Siegfried is too young. He's supposed to be old and cantankerous.

No he isn't.

She shouldn't be hugging Tristan or sitting down to drink tea with Siegfried. Shock
I haven't watched any more so haven't seen this, but WTF?! While I liked Mrs Hall in the books, she's definitely more formal with the others than this.

Maireas · 14/09/2020 10:32

Yes, I think Donald Sinclair was just a few years older than Alf Wight. The casting of Robert Hardy did mean that he was a much older character.

Kit19 · 14/09/2020 12:54

The lovely Samuel West who plays Siegfried is 54 so he's not that young

IntermittentParps · 14/09/2020 13:05

Kit19, yes, that's what people are saying. Along with Robert Hardy in the last iteration of the show, he's too old.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 14/09/2020 13:10

There definitely a bit in one of the books that say something like "although barely five years older than me, Siegfried could don the mantle of the wise greybeard with ease" (not quite right, but that's the idea).

Maireas · 14/09/2020 13:41

Samuel West doesn't jar too much. At least James and Helen look and sound right.

KayakingOnDown · 15/09/2020 22:12

I liked tonight's episode. We got to know the characters better.

And James looks good with his top off

SallySeven · 15/09/2020 22:16

I have to say I like this series.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 15/09/2020 22:18

Haha Kayak I thought the same thing!

I love it, easy watching, nice characters and beautiful scenery. I'm itching to reread the books again now!

Hearnoevilspeaknoevil · 15/09/2020 22:19

I enjoyed tonight's episode. I think the characters have settled.
Really like Samuel West as Siegfried and found Tristan less jarring.
Not sure re Mrs Hall still, as others have said. She's not sufficiently gruff.
The poor horse. 😔 Very well done

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 15/09/2020 22:59

Jess the dog is absolutely lovely.

Yes, I enjoyed tonight's a bit more. I think how everybody has been introduced it's easier to follow the stories rather than the characters.

toffee1000 · 16/09/2020 03:56

Actually, Alf Wight was not actually Scottish by birth. He was born in Sunderland to English parents, and they moved to Glasgow when he was three weeks old. He continued to support Sunderland Football Club for the rest of his life.
Also, according to a quote from the biography, the real Siegfried was much more eccentric than he was written in the books.

MrsMayo · 16/09/2020 08:06

Still enjoying it. I didnt watch the old series but I did take a look at the first episode and agree Mrs Hall is very different. I dont mind the new one though

5foot5 · 16/09/2020 08:41

Really enjoying this as nice undemanding TV.

I am old enough to remember the 1970s version and I have read some of the books, but I still think this version is doing well. I think the central cast work well together. I especially like that the female characters are more interesting than the 70s version. I barely remember Mrs Hall from the previous incarnation whereas here she is quite an important character.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 16/09/2020 14:07

'Mrs Hall has far too prominent a role for me. She's too familiar with the men '

Yes and she seems to young, not matronly enough.

I like Siegfried and Tristan, such funny characters. I wish James wasn't quite so wet. I know he's new and underconfident but all the wide eyed dithering is irritating. Why didn't he just give the horse a hefty dose of painkillers until he could get a second opinion?

KayakingOnDown · 16/09/2020 15:47

Why didn't he just give the horse a hefty dose of painkillers until he could get a second opinion?

Because that's not what happened in the book?

GetOffYourHighHorse · 16/09/2020 15:50

Ok. I wonder why irl he didn't dose the horse up on painkillers then get a second opnion as he didn't seem so sure afterwards. Maybe that was what they did in those days.

SallySeven · 16/09/2020 16:47

We were discussing this. I wondered if it was the time taken to get hold of someone pre mobile phone era. Who knows when Siegfried would have made it.
(I thought "failing in duty of care" was maybe modern terminology from James!)

I think the scenery is made really good use of. All in I'm really enjoying it.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 16/09/2020 16:52

Which book is it in? I remembered the calf with lead poisoning, but really don't remember much about racehorses at all.

SallySeven · 16/09/2020 16:57

Sadly I don't have the books anymore or I'd have been rereading them!

GetOffYourHighHorse · 16/09/2020 17:01

'I wondered if it was the time taken to get hold of someone pre mobile phone era. Who knows when Siegfried would have made it.'

Yes you're right, probably a longer time had elapsed and as you say no way of knowing how much longer he'd be.
