Crime Drama recommendations?

HowFastIsTooFast · 27/08/2020 21:50

DP and I have discovered a shared love for crime dramas, so far we've loved Happy Valley, Luther and The Fall.

Any recommendations for other series to try? We have the usual British channels, Netflix & Now TV (so the major SKY channels).

Thanks in advance!

No Offense - bloody brilliant!

@Ginfordinner of course I meant Wallander!
I've just spent a good part of the lockdown watching the Kenneth Branagh version which makes Sweden look so nice.
Is the Swedish version available for free anywhere?

Ginfordinner · 30/08/2020 10:01

No idea, but IMO it is better than the KB version.

Username6210 · 31/08/2020 00:11

@Ginfordinner do you know if the Swedish version episodes are based on the same books/stories as the KB version?

WingingWonder · 31/08/2020 00:14

Hinterland - there are welsh and English versions so choose which ever suits!

There's a new 'young Wallander' series starting or just started, I think. I haven't even seen the Ken Branagh one though so am very behind!

Cardinal is terrific. LOVE Lise Delorme. And Hinterland is beautiful, if very sad and melancholy.

Thou Shalt Not Kill is good. Set in Turin. Beautiful interiors and locations (and cast!).

Also maybe try Valkyrien. Norwegian and not quite crime, but a thriller. It's quite unusual and high-concept.

Wisting has the same lead actor as Valkyrien and is quite classic Scandi crime – troubled detective with a turbulent family life. Nice settings.

Also Twin, I think it was called – also Norwegian. Again not totally crime but mystery/thriller/family drama. The scenery is breathtaking; it's set in the amazing Lofoten Islands.

Cosy crime not mentioned yet: Grantchester. Gorgeous 50s clothes and idyllic English village setting.

Going back a few years, but for me Inspector Morse has never been bettered.

Username6210 · 02/09/2020 22:51

@IntermittentParps I've seen the trailer for Young Wallander and it looked like an Americanised version, is more action and less slow moody panoramic landscape shots. I hope I'm wrong and will give it a go.

Dirty John
Mind Hunters
Dirty John 2 Betty Broderick story
Safe
The Stranger
all Netflix

stumbledin · 05/09/2020 20:21

I thought Lewis was better than Morse!

And Endeavour better still, but not for the main character but for his 2 superior officers.

Has anyone mentioned Spiral - best ever. French (subtitled) gritty and no frills and silliness. And as a friend of mine said, they are all so grubby but still somehow chic. Good female characters. Terrible that there never be another series.

Star555 · 06/09/2020 05:54

The Victim (2019) was poignantly suspenseful.

Midsomer Murders--the original episodes written by Anthony Horowitz (who created Foyle's War) are the best.

ohffs66 · 06/09/2020 07:19

I loved The Tunnel, and Hinterland. I also really liked Keeping Faith, not quite as dark as a lot of crime series but still an enjoyable watch.

dollypartonscoat · 07/09/2020 20:11

About to watch Hidden as it has had a few mentions here.

Username1243 · 20/10/2020 23:52

Hinterland is magnificent. I think I might watch the Welsh language version now.

Downunderduchess · 21/10/2020 00:15

I’ve recently watched No Offence, loved it, great characters & storylines.

Also highly recommend Broadchurch. Possible only the first two series though. The third was just ok.

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/10/2020 04:50
