Dh and I are watching too. We are both rooting for the young lad but at the same time just can't get past his treatment of the JC staff.

I like the two JC staff weve seen so far (Jan and is it Ama?) Jan is so right, it's a social contract and you have to do your bit. The lady who she had the sterner talk with is, imo, an absoloutley stereotypical JC service user and it's interesting seeing the way they manage those who refuse to engage properly with the "social contract"

Oh- this program is making me so sad.
How can we think it's ok for a person to have £50 for a months food and everything they need?
Hoping Karen gets good news after the adverts.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 10/08/2020 21:54

It's a crap system - has to have a prepay meter for gas and electric, because poor, yet is charged obscene amounts for gas and electric due to prepay meter.

grafittiartist · 10/08/2020 21:55

Yeah!!

grafittiartist · 10/08/2020 21:55

Yeah- Karen got the job

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 10/08/2020 21:55

Yay Karen!

cattypussclaw · 10/08/2020 22:00

I want to take Kenny home and look after him. He's just the loveliest fella.

Swingoutsistersledge2 · 10/08/2020 22:01

That was brilliant so pleased for Kenny and Karen .

I don’t think Pam is really employable

Hare hills/Leeds is not in South Yorkshire!

ilovesooty · 11/08/2020 20:42

In my last job I worked pretty closely with the Leeds job centres.

I also knew Karen, who is so, so deserving of success having been looking for work for so long. She committed to job searching and persevered where most people would have given up.

BabylovesJohnny · 14/08/2020 00:32

I think the OP got mixed up with the name ...Isn’t it Southern House Jobcentre in Yorkshire (West) rather than South Yorks?
I used to work in a different Leeds jobcentre . I recognise the Pamela type ... so frustrating when trying to help. Obviously, there can be more to it at times but on the surface, it’s hard.

purpleme12 · 16/08/2020 00:36

It's called The Yorkshire Jobcentre. It's set in West Yorkshire not South Yorkshire.

I felt really bad for Karen. She seems such a lovely person. And that person at her new job seemed lovely too.
That first interview Karen had that she told the work coach about - surely that was discrimination? And surely she could work in a call centre if they worked with her eg getting specialist equipment if needed?
Anyway she did get a job so it was ok in the end

The lad was very likeable

I couldn't cope with the rejection after rejection when I was job searching years ago. Got me down so bad not having a job
But £100 a week to live on! My rent is way more than that! I felt for the lad with his house so unfurnished with so little money.
I find it so scary the prospect of losing my job

CorianderLord · 16/08/2020 00:52

I was in awe of her positive attitude. She just kept trying. She was wonderful and yes I felt so sad for her.

purpleme12 · 16/08/2020 01:20

It's just so unfair the whole thing about job searching. It's all about selling yourself and first impressions and she's right it is about looks too.
Like she said they can't discriminate but they'll just say we've got other people who are better suited
You can sell yourself not as good as the next person but actually you might be best person for the job still!
I hate it

ilovesooty · 16/08/2020 02:39

It was certainly discrimination. It's hard enough job searching without prospective employers openly telling you that it isn't many years until you retire - and I know that happened to her. She never, ever complained about her hearing issues either. She just wanted to work and was absolutely determined to do so. She put in hours volunteering at the support centre for the elderly too.

I'm so delighted she's found employment.

ilovesooty · 17/08/2020 21:56

This is interesting. I did a lot of work with the Social Justice Team. I know Becky.

purpleme12 · 17/08/2020 22:02

Didn't know quite what to make of the woman with not a lot of hair (can't remember her name)

It was really interesting to see the other work they did with the young lad to try get him started. I'd be interested to see how he progresses

bekindtome · 17/08/2020 22:20

I think she was called rose. She seemed a lot younger than 27.

tessiegirl · 17/08/2020 23:06

Just watching this now. Rose is annoying. I don't believe all her self worth crap. Making all the excuses not to find a job.

WitchesGlove · 17/08/2020 23:37

I can’t believe Olivia was £600 a month better off not working and living on benefits- I thought UC was supposed to ensure people were always better off in work Hmm

WitchesGlove · 17/08/2020 23:40

She is a hippie dippy type that doesn’t really want to work.

Doesn’t seem that employable anyway tbh. I bet if she was given money to train as a therapist, she wouldn’t do it anyway.
