For me, it's Pamela Rabe. So underrated but so immensely brilliant. Also think Jessica Lange is amazing.

Amanda Root in Persuasion. It’s a staggeringly good version of the book and she portrays the character’s loss and yearning brilliantly.

I've had the pleasure of seeing David Tennant on stage. He is very charismatic - incredibly so. The play I saw him in was also one of those recorded and shown on YouTube during lockdown. Seeing it recorded was not a patch on seeing him live. But that is charisma, not sure he is the greatest actor I have ever seen.

Back in the day, Derek Jacobi always put in an electric performance in theatre. I have seen him in multiple plays and always been wowed.

Colin Morgan also an amazing young talent. Also seen him in multiple plays and he is never the same twice.

I don't rate Jodie Comer at all! I'm in a minority, I think Grin

Stephen Graham is fantastic.

Lottapianos · 09/08/2020 20:46

'I don't rate Jodie Comer at all'

Shes a bit gimmicky in Killing Eve (unlike Fiona Shaw, who is PERFECTION in her every scene and looks DIVINE to boot). Jodie was flat out brilliant though in 10 Rillington Place and Doctor Foster, in fairly small roles. I think shes a real talent

SchadenfreudePersonified · 09/08/2020 20:58

Pamela Rabe is f#cking terrifying! She's a genius.

Phil Davis is always a treat too

I don't know Pamela Rabe, but Phil Davis is brilliant! Totally believable in every role I've seen him in - a huge range.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 09/08/2020 21:08

*I think Meryl Streep is like this - for me anyway - I know she’s really good as in technical - very good at the little habits and subtleties - but for me she is always Meryl Streep and quite a strong forcefulness about her as a person that is always there.

I've always thought this, too - it's her command of accents which is her most impressive talent. (Though I have to take many of them as being accurate because other people say so eg I have no idea what German spoken with a Polish accent should sound like, so . . . )

[of David Tennant] I think hes well over rated as well. Hes pretty, and seems like a LOVELY bloke, but I dont think hes that great an actor. Never seen him on stage, so I take that point

I agree - and I wasn't impressed with his Richard III. The best thing he was in was Dr Who . . . he is very pretty though . . .

Depressing that there's so few non-white actors/actresses in this thread Sad.

Supersimkin2 · 09/08/2020 21:26

Andrew Scott.
Sam Rockwell.

Was Idris Elba not mentioned?

Should have been.

Lottapianos · 09/08/2020 21:40

'Was Idris Elba not mentioned?'

Think hes seriously over rated too. Luther was utter bilge, even if he did look good in his big coat! He was brilliant in The Wire but so was everyone, so I'm putting it down to brilliant script/ direction

HeronLanyon · 09/08/2020 21:43

Love Chewitel ejiofor - first heard narrating the amazing documentary The Tower about the Pepys Estate - and has gone on to do amazing stuff.

Emmmie · 09/08/2020 21:45

David SuchetStar

Gonegrey31 · 09/08/2020 21:48

Sophie Okonedo ( in Anthony and Cleopatra ) Just brilliant

Florence Pugh in Lady Macbeth

IcedPurple · 09/08/2020 21:50

@Thateverlastingyes77

Claes Bang because he looks and acts so completely different in different roles. Admittedly he hasn’t been in much but it’s hard to believe he is the same person in each role he plays. Looking forward to seeing more of him in the future.
As I recall, we got to see quite a bit of the lovely Claes Bang in 'Dracula'. Wouldn't mind seeing even more however...

Yep. Absolutely beautiful man but only just about OK as an actor.
Cattenberg · 09/08/2020 21:56

Another person here who would like to see more of Claes Bang

fans self

Tatapie · 09/08/2020 21:58

More votes for Elisabeth Moss and Leonardo di Caprio.
Also don't think he's been mentioned but Richard Schiff is excellent.
My all time favourites are Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant.

Tatapie · 09/08/2020 22:00

Forgot Dominic West and Lester Freamon.

I don’t rate Idris Elba but I think Don Cheadle is a phenomenal actor. I particularly loved him in Boogie Nights. He and Philip Seymour Hoffman made the film.
SillyUnMurphy · 09/08/2020 22:13

Also Mahershala Ali has been perfect in everything I have seen him in.

HeronLanyon · 09/08/2020 22:13

Albert Finney (plus Chewitel).

PapsofJura · 09/08/2020 22:29

Damien Lewis in his portrayal of Henry VIII in Wolf Hall, absolutely mesmerising.

@PapsofJura

Agreed. He was exactly as I had imagined Hillary Mantel's Henry to be - a strange combination of majestic and pathetic.

Wolf Hall was brilliantly cast all round - Claire Foy as Anne, Mark Lesser as Thomas More and of course Mark Rylance as Cromwell. I'd had doubts about him at first since he really didn't fit the role physically but soon I couldn't imagine anyone but him as Master Secretary. I wonder when - or if - they're going to do a sequel? It would be great if they could get the same cast and crew together again.
