Mad Men! Very late starter. Enthralled ...

Until last weekend I'd only watched about half of one random episode. It has completely taken over my nights and days. I'm coming to the end of Season 4 and the real world's going to seem strange and unfamiliar by the end of Season 7.

Anyone else? Or, if no one wants to play, was there ever a particularly engaged thread I can seek out in the archives?

(No, I've done pretty much nothing else all day ... Lunch was late. Supper almost non-existent. Missed Cabin Pressure. Haven't phoned beloved ancient relative. Or sent email to potential colleague.)

Now that it's back to being good, I'm contemplating rewatching the whole hundred million episodes once I get to the end ...

Sorry Marsha - crossed you!

'I think Don Draper is one of the greatest TV characters ever'

Completely agree. Brilliantly written and performed, and it scares me how much I relate to him!

ValancyRedfern · 09/08/2020 21:39

As someone who has also spent my life learning nothing and repeating the same mistakes over and over, I have a lot of fellow feeling with Don Draper!

IcedPurple · 09/08/2020 21:47

Where Don lets down the researcher woman for Megan, is perfectly done.

Yep. Dumping the intellectually challenging woman close to your own age for the pretty, non-threatening secretary 15 years your junior. Some things never change.

I love the scene where Don phones Faye to break up with her (classy!) and tells her he's engaged to someone else. "Well I hope you're very happy. And I hope she knows you only like the beginnings of things." No wonder Don felt threatened by Faye. She had his number exact.

FindMeInTheSunshine · 09/08/2020 22:20

Love this series. I never normally rewatch whole series, but this I've watched three times through and see new things each time. The Suitcase is my favourite episode too, and the part at the end where he reaches out for Peggy's hand echoing back to his rejection of her in the very first episode gets me choked up!

SunInTheSkyYouKnowHowIFeel · 09/08/2020 23:20

This thread has made me want to watch it again, such a great show.

I was going to say my favourite character is Joan but then I also like Peggy, Don, Roger and even Pete by the end of it.

My favourite 2 episodes are Carousel and the one where the guy looses his foot and then the reaction to that.

SunInTheSkyYouKnowHowIFeel · 09/08/2020 23:26

The Carousel Speech, posting here for nostalgia:

WTF99 · 09/08/2020 23:32

I've watched it all through twice, and just started on series one again. Absolutely love it!
And Jon Hamm is utterly delectable.

Nixen · 09/08/2020 23:40

I loooove Mad Men. It helps that Jon Hamm is incredible, and that I work in marketing!

MarshaBradyo · 09/08/2020 23:43

I’ve watched it through twice and I like that they build up to stuff, eg the gay Art Director really builds.

Also I love how insecure and different DD is with his flashbacks in the fur shop.

EmiIyStAubert · 09/08/2020 23:48

It's marvellous isn't it, I 've seen it twice now. The opening episode, where Don appears to be a single man, then at the very end of the episode arriving home to Betty and the children. The carousel speech, of course, then the very last episode and the advert (trying not to give spoilers)

Betty is one of my favourite characters, love/hate as has been said. Also, Don, Peggy, and even Lane.

FilledSoda · 10/08/2020 08:18

My all time favourite TV series.
I was so upset when it ended .

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 10/08/2020 08:54

loved Mad Men
it has left Netflix
where are you seeing it now?

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 10/08/2020 09:12

Prime Video.

(Just realised they omit the word Amazon from the name of the streaming service.)

Have to say Mad Men alone would more than justify the monthly/annual fee of any service.

Is season 6 the final one please ??

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 10/08/2020 09:27

Thank you @PerditaProvokesEnmity

ColonelNobbyNobbs · 10/08/2020 09:43

No there is another season after that. I gave up at season 6!

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 10/08/2020 10:01

Season 7 is split into 2 parts. Don't know why; perhaps everyone was exhausted?

Ninkanink · 10/08/2020 10:07

It is my favourite television series. You’re exactly right, the characters are so well written, so sympathetic even where they are thoroughly unlikeable - real people, with all their complexity - rather than cardboard cutouts.

And the ending was brilliant (no spoilers, don’t worry!).

I need to watch the whole thing again.

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 10/08/2020 10:09

I loved mad Men especially the first few seasons.

Xuli · 10/08/2020 10:20

I always loved how John Hamm plays Don and Dick very differently; there are odd moments when he's Don but all of a sudden he has a Dick reaction, it's so subtle but so wonderfully done.

Fab episodes are The Suitcase ("I killed 17 men at Okinawa!") and one in the second series with the priest and learning the truth about Peggy's baby.

Though Don's reaction when Peggy says her mum thinks the baby was his Grin

There's also an awesome, awesome moment near the finale with Kenny and Pete and Kenny's new job, loved that.

Such an amazing TV show. DH and I always argue over the best TV show ever, he goes for The Sopranos but I'd always go for Mad Men.

KellyMarieTunstall2 · 10/08/2020 10:28

Thanks for this thread OP, it's been 6 years since I fell in love with Mad Men and this has inspired me to watch it all again with the husband who hasn't seen itGrin

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 10/08/2020 10:29

I nag people to watch,
my dd became hooked.

EachandEveryone · 10/08/2020 10:36

Oh its bloody brilliant. Its one of those that nobody else I know could get into. Like the Wire. Christina Hendricks was made for that role. They were all so good. It pains me to see Harry Hamlin on Real Housewives of BH. I want them all to be so classy 😄
