MsLatte’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama addicts #17): I need suits and dimples and questionable morals

boatyardblues · 23/07/2020 00:42

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. (MsLatte is a Her Private Life reference.) Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking, but we don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, which gets in the way of the drama.

We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when. The previous thread is here but our ‘Addicts Recommend’ list below is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads.

Shows marked with an asterisk are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance, eg about suitability for younger teens.

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, film and music when the mood takes us. Quite a few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others admittedly), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We have a few frequently used acronyms:

FL/2FL = female lead/2nd female lead

ML/2ML = male lead/2nd male lead

SLS = Second Lead Syndrome (where the FL/ML is too dense to realise the 2ML/2FL is better)
🥾🍑 (boot, peach) = kick up the arse to go to bed

We also abbreviate titles if they’re long, but usually with an obvious abbreviation. Some favourite actors & actresses have been abbreviated for speed/efficiency, eg Park Min Young (PMY), Kim Jae Wook (KJW). Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in…

I'm still sour over Dark Blue & Midnight. It was so close and then poof, all gone.

Just popping in to say it looks like kissing Kim SooHyun is an experience if Psycho but It's Okay is anything to go by. Seo YeJi looks pleased with it at least.

Yes!!! I quite agree I was all wtf at the end 😡 I did like 2ML but still wanted the OTP

Ooh haven’t got to that yet I’m a couple of episodes behind!

TheGirlWithTheArabStrap · 25/07/2020 20:08

I'm working this weekend and we've been having a new kitchen fitted (finally!!! I've had a makeshift kitchen with no sink for 2 years 😭) so I've hardly watched anything!
I'm hoping to catch up on some tomorrow night.

boatyardblues · 25/07/2020 20:26

I’m still working my way through Mrs Cop, but I’m finding all the brutalised runaways and murders hard going. There’s more Son Ho Joon now, so that’s picked up. The most fascinating aspect is Lee Da-Hee’s transformation between this and her role as Scarlet in WWW. She looks subtly different but I can’t quite pin down how.

AesopsMables · 25/07/2020 20:38

Yes Bettys it's a binger for sure. Clever plot with lots of layers. I may even go so far to say a classic?! It's so good to find one that you cannot stop watching.

bettys · 26/07/2020 18:54

Anyone up to date on It's OK? I'm very suspicious of the head nurse....

bettys · 26/07/2020 18:54

And Kim So Hyun in a suit with his hair slicked back 😮😍

boatyardblues · 26/07/2020 19:36

I’m so behind on Its Okay. Lovely pic of him and FL smiling/laughing on his Insta feed though.

I've made a slight rookie error.
Got totally invested in MGL this weekend, around ep 14 I checked to see if it was a 16 or 20 episode as so many loose ends still.
There's 52 😯!!
Up to ep18 and DH calling family intervention on me if I don't stop and spend some time with them tonight. Roll on tomorrow ...

bettys · 26/07/2020 20:02

52 Aesops!!!!!! 😱😱 That’s like Empress Ki all over again...without the poisonings presumably

I was going to start it then looked it up & realised it was the ML who had a sex scandal & wavered.....

boatyardblues · 26/07/2020 20:06

I was going to give it a go, but 52 episodes is mad. I wonder how it works out if you only watch the odd episodes and skip all the evens (finale excepted).

@headache898..
.😂😂💜... Fully fledged army here! Reporting!... Yes! I've been following the push for Moon on Twitter... Sigh! It's such a lovely song! KIM SEOKJIN!!... however! We're all on the get go for August 21st now!... New single! Arrrrgghh! Tell your daughter!... Borahae! 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

bettys · 26/07/2020 20:18

🤣🤣 Bea!! 💜💜

AesopsMables · 26/07/2020 20:33

52 Aesops!!!!!! 😱😱 That’s like Empress Ki all over again...without the poisonings presumably

Funnily enough I've paused at an overdose (so kind of poisonings)

Boatyard That's not a bad idea watching one then missing. However I'm really enjoying every single episode ( ask me again after another 10)

TheGirlWithTheArabStrap · 26/07/2020 21:13

bettys ill be up to date with It's Okay in about two hours!

headache898 · 26/07/2020 21:15

@bea Wow! We're all delighted in this ARMY household! My sons? not as much 😆

boatyardblues · 26/07/2020 21:19

Headache - even though I’m not ARMY, Bea’s fangirling meant I had planned to try & get tickets for the cancelled Twickenham gigs earlier this month. I had even lined someone up to come with me. Ah well. 2020 is turning into such a non-year for events.

BramblyHedge · 26/07/2020 21:29

I am up to date with ‘okay’ and really enjoying it. Hope the ML just decides to be happy and no noble idiocy.

boatyardblues · 26/07/2020 21:45

Aesops - I just checked My Golden Life on Netflix and I don’t think it would hurt for your family to stage an intervention. The episodes are over an hour long!

OP posts:
Bea · 26/07/2020 22:40

I WILL see them live again! And when the time comes... I'm gunning for the kit and caboodle! Vip! Soundcheck! ALL nights! After this year.... I will be relentless and Fangirl like I've never before... ⁽ⁱᵍⁿᵒʳⁱⁿᵍ ᵗʰᵉ ˢʰᵃᵐᵉˡᵉˢˢ ˢʰᵒʷ ᵃᵗ ʷᵉᵐᵇˡᵉʸ ᵒᶠ ᶜᵒᵘʳˢᵉ﹗ 😁⁾

TheGirlWithTheArabStrap · 26/07/2020 23:54

Ahh Bea your BTS excitement makes me want to go and see them too and I'm definitely not Army 😂.

I'm not up to date with It's Okay as I fell asleep on the couch 15 mins into the latest episode. But the Head Nurse was definitely a bit sus in ep 11. I'm really enjoying it! It's all so beautiful. Seo Ye Ji's clothes must cost a bomb! She definitely looked like she enjoyed the kissing. I LOLed at the supermarket scene and her demanding a son 🤣

headache898 · 27/07/2020 03:18

@boatyardblues I hope you get to see them one day :)

Bea · 27/07/2020 07:34

I've said it once and I'll say it again! Wembley was one of the most exhilarating and joyous moments of my life! I've never had so much abandoned fun!! 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜🤣🥰

Bea · 27/07/2020 07:36

However I do realise I really shouldn't be recruiting Army as it will make scramble for tickets even more of a Hunger Games scenario than it already is!! 😭

I think the pressure to get tickets for the next tour (whenever that may be) will be mental! Shock Shock
