MsLatte’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama addicts #17): I need suits and dimples and questionable morals

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. (MsLatte is a Her Private Life reference.) Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking, but we don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, which gets in the way of the drama.

We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when. The previous thread is here but our ‘Addicts Recommend’ list below is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads.

Shows marked with an asterisk are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance, eg about suitability for younger teens.

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, film and music when the mood takes us. Quite a few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others admittedly), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We have a few frequently used acronyms:

FL/2FL = female lead/2nd female lead

ML/2ML = male lead/2nd male lead

SLS = Second Lead Syndrome (where the FL/ML is too dense to realise the 2ML/2FL is better)
🥾🍑 (boot, peach) = kick up the arse to go to bed

We also abbreviate titles if they’re long, but usually with an obvious abbreviation. Some favourite actors & actresses have been abbreviated for speed/efficiency, eg Park Min Young (PMY), Kim Jae Wook (KJW). Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in…

Noise cancelling headphones sound amazing!

bettys · 13/08/2020 12:40

The Korean Dramaland website has lots of these places listed!

@TheGirlWithTheArabStrap

I have 2 eps of MUF to go and I really love it. I really want to know what happens with all the characters not just the leads. My eyes never drift away from the screen! It's also got lots of locations for our trip. I think the record bar was mentioned already. There's also a bar where there are fridges full of different beers that you help yourself too (and I presume you pay at the end 😂). And a restaurant by a river that the 2 MLs go to. That restaurant was featured in John Torode's Korean Food Tour too. Ive been googling but I can't find the name of it.
Oh yes, totally agree about liking ALL the characters AND the locations, including the riverside eatery. MUF was the complete package. It’s kind of spoiled me for the rest of August, as I was so sad when I didn’t have any episodes left to watch.

If they are still requiring two weeks’ quarantine in a hotel first, I’d say no. Grin

Really want to live in ^Moon Gang-Tae's house.

AesopsMables · 13/08/2020 18:11

fifilacklustre · 13/08/2020 18:21

Two weeks of quarantine to watch Kdrama uninterrupted, Bliss Grin

That website is amazing bettys 👍. I want to go to ALL the places 😂

bettys · 13/08/2020 21:25

TheGirl oh me too!!! I could spend so long going round all the places oohing & aahing, it would require another spreadsheet!

boaty I think fifi’s quarantine was hypothetical 🤣🤣

Aesops have you been sent the spreadsheet link? Have you chosen a drama?

boatyardblues · 13/08/2020 21:33

I sent the link Betty. 👍

I’m just so nosey boaty I want to know if someone’s found something good!! FOMO
!!🤣🤣

bettys · 13/08/2020 21:57

I am on ep 12 of Into The Ring and the romance actually has a couple who are quite upfront with their smooching.
Also finally getting the connections worked out with the politicians. Enjoying FLs parents with their posing by the car & drunken get to know the boyfriend sesh

fifilacklustre · 13/08/2020 22:35

Aesops, yes unfortunately hypothetical, and wishful thinking Grin. Did you find a drama?

I've spent the last few hours going between that link and looking up flights - I can but dream Grin.

Going to catch up with WIL now.

boatyardblues · 13/08/2020 22:55

I was hoping we’d get to see if the film comes off and is a success in WIL, but there’s so much focus on all the backstory I’m not sure we will. I wanted to see if Noh Ae-Jeong going out on a limb would pay off. I was also hoping for some scenes with everyone in Joseon dress-up and dodgy wigs.

At least we got a bit of gangster striding along in slo-mo with his minions behind him

AesopsMables · 13/08/2020 23:33

Thanks Boatyard
There are so many to watch! I may try extracurricular Bettys
When I log on my computer tomorrow I will update a few ratings that I've watched

AesopsMables · 13/08/2020 23:36

We are off to Portugal in a few weeks. No air bridge = 14 days quarantine when we return 👍🏽 That, combined with being a Golf Widow whilst there means I need to stock up on dramas to watch 😀

AesopsMables · 13/08/2020 23:48

The flights DH gifted me for Seoul have been exchanged for trip to KL over new year (visiting DSis) assuming we can travel there.
Once C19 is under control I'm booking another flight to South Korea in 2021 for certain. I'm so desperate to visit and eat all the dishes I've memorised. Visit a couple of cities and even try to get to Jeju
a couple of days.

Im thinking
4 days in Seoul
2 days in Busan
2 days in Jeju
2 days back in Seoul

bettys · 13/08/2020 23:56

Hmmm interesting Aesops , that itinerary could potentially pack a lot in!
By the way have you seen Stranger? It was the series that got me into kdrama. Police/legal procedural , no romance but strong on character and team-building . Series 2 is starting on Saturday so if you get into it you have a whole new series coming up - luxury! And on Netflix so downloadable Wink

boatyardblues · 14/08/2020 00:01

I saw that Stranger was returning Betty & thought of you. I just need to finish S1. I don’t know why I’m so stop-start with it, as it is excellent.
