Anyone remember the original and will you be watching the new one? I studied it at A Level and still have my copy with all my notes in.

I’ve just watched The Shrine. It was tremendously affecting, vintage Bennett. I know the stretch of road Lorna described and while I’ve never seen a woman in a Hi Vis vest kneeling in a lay-by I can well imagine there might be. Certainly seen plenty of flowers.
Not sure it needed the contributory wank in it, bit of a false note there. Roads like that don’t need you to be seriously distracted for an accident to happen. I prefer Lorna’s wondering about a bird or a badger - maybe the Kite, even, if he was a bird watcher.
How sad she had to lose him to partly discover another side to him, dislike of avocado sandwiches and all.

notacooldad · 25/06/2020 14:31

I'm just watching Martin Freeman.in a Chip in the sugar.
I have never been a fan of his citing but he is brilliant in this!

Footsanitiser · 25/06/2020 14:37

Interesting as I think SL is a great actress but me and DH started watching it and just looked at each other as in WTF are we watching /listening to!!

HUCKMUCK · 25/06/2020 14:42

Nights in the Garden of Spain is almost my favourite of the originals and I am really not a fan of Tamsin Greig so I am torn about watching that one.

Looking forward to Jodie Comer in Her Big Chance. I also love the Outside Dog from the originals. Actually I love all of them!!!

I wish I could write like that.

The80sweregreat · 25/06/2020 15:15

Martin Freeman was ace as the depressed Graham. Sad too as well.
Soldering on : how deluded was that lady?
I want to shake a few of these people ( gently) !

notacooldad · 25/06/2020 16:08

Soldering on : how deluded was that lady?
I know a lit if parents if adult children who are similar to her.
Some maybe deluded but others know what the score is but dont want to admit it to others, and often themselves.

The80sweregreat · 25/06/2020 18:32

It's so sad when parents won't admit there is an abuser in their midst. They make excuses for them , they think it's just a blip or just ignore it. It must happen more than we know. :(

SchadenfreudePersonified · 25/06/2020 20:34

Loved the Tamsin Greig one, it was Penelope Wilton in the original, if I remember rightly.

If that's "Nights in the Gardens of Spain", yes -it was Penelope Wilton. It broke my heart, that one. I'm not up to it yet with the new ones because our stupid telly won't give us BBC today.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 25/06/2020 20:36

"Her Big Chance" was very disappointing. Julie Walters version was MUCH better and more believable.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 25/06/2020 20:40

I'm looking forward to "Love Among the Lentils" - I think it was Maggie Smith in the original - I thought it was great. Her husband the vicar being thrilled to have an alcoholic wife to save, and being able to impress the bishop because "they did it together", and all the other vicars being jealous . . .

winningwhilstlosing · 26/06/2020 05:17

Does anyone know where I can watch the originals in full - I seem to only be able to find short clips?

1066vegan · 26/06/2020 05:31

@winningwhilstlosing I don't know if the originals are streaming anywhere but they're available on dvd.

WinningEveryDay · 26/06/2020 05:47

I think even though the SL one was new to TV, he either wrote it in the 80s with the others or was basing it in the 80s which is why some things didn't ring true viewed from a 2020 lens.

Some of the full versions are on YouTube

I can't get iplayer so I'm relying on YouTube uploads! Watched Jodie, Sarah and Imelda so far. KST next!

MrsGrindah · 26/06/2020 06:23

I thought Sarah Lancashire was wildly over acting. She almost made it sound like a Victoria Wood character.

1066vegan · 26/06/2020 06:27

@TanteRose I tried your YouTube link but it's blocked in the UK because of copyright.

TanteRose · 26/06/2020 06:29

vegan ohhh right!

MrsGrindah · 26/06/2020 08:02

And Jodie Cromer ( who I think is fantastic usually), is just doing a Julie Walters impression

The80sweregreat · 26/06/2020 08:07

I liked Jodie's one. Julie Walters is a hard act to follow though.
' very interesting Simon' !
I read online she had to film it in one day.

HUCKMUCK · 26/06/2020 11:54

I did like the Jodie one but her accent was a bit odd at he start - she seemed like she was doing a Keira Knightly impression - she settled in to it a bit a little way in - understandable I suppose if it was all filmed in a short time scale. I thought she played it quite differently than JW did - still great.

I loved Martin Freeman's - much better than I thought it would be.

The80sweregreat · 26/06/2020 12:15

Spoiler alert .. a chip in the sugar

I was impressed with Martin Freeman too. He was so good and made it believable.
I could almost 'see ' the diner they went to : all red and blingy and nothing like the one they always went to! Mum's ' fancy man' was very well drawn : slightly racist a bit of an aging chancer , ready to pounce on any unsuspecting female : horrible , but charming enough to draw them in , sadly.
Graham having really bad times with his mental health and not being understood by his mother.
So cleverly done.
Outside Dog was also very good.

VanGoghsDog · 26/06/2020 12:22

Women vicars were first ordained in 1994.

eddiemairswife · 26/06/2020 13:00

According to the Radio Times the Sarah Lancashire one was written in 2019.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 26/06/2020 13:12

I prefer this - I don't think any good actor needs to "copy" another -tey make their own interpretation (which the script may force to be similar in some ways).

I thought Jodie's interpretation seemed more vulnerable and hurt than Julie's. And I didn't recognise a lot of the script - not sure if it had been updated or if my old wumman memory has gone for a burton.

wewereliars · 26/06/2020 14:21

Loved the originals and have just watched the first two. Brilliant acting from Sarah Lancashire as ever, but such dark subject matter. Very uncomfortable viewing. I thought Harriet Walter's acting was phenomenal.
