Anyone remember the original and will you be watching the new one? I studied it at A Level and still have my copy with all my notes in.

I shouldn't have binge-watched them, as I got bored of "only" (rather than 'but' or 'except', nearly ironed blouses and cardis, brooches and teapots for one cup of tea.
I like Maxine Peake but felt she was too young for the role of Miss Fozard.

Am I the only person on here who watches at the time they are actually broadcast?

Possibly. Why?

I watch them as broadcast too, I'm not a binge watcher, but we're all different, I guess!

In "The outside dog" the wife knew her husband was guilty because she said he would never have allowed the dog off the lead as she hadn't been "done".
So Tina the dog couldn't have accidentally rolled in the victim's blood-smattered clothing when she "ran off" on the late night walks as it just wouldn't have happened.
This was one of the arguments that got him off the charge, and I think was before the tan trousers under the kennel revelation.

Monica Dolan was great in The Shrine but the writing was minor Bennett - it seemed like filler material compared to the others.

Yes, I thought the same. Far too young.

That's how I felt about "The Shrine" dweller - no reflection on the actress, or her interpretation and performance, but the script itself lacked any punch.

Patricia Routledge was a wonderful Miss Fozzard.

I did think Maxine Peake gave a good performance though.

Tina, the dog, was also witness to his dastardly deeds - which is why she never barked when he was at home - she knew what he was capable of and was probably terrified.

I watch when they're broadcast too, rather than binge watch so, you're not alone @eddiemairswife.

Patricia Routledge still reigns supreme as Miss Fozzard (and Irene Ruddock).

I make a pot of tea for just one cup :). I always think I'll have two but usually forget.

I've never seen them before, but Lesley Manville was breathtaking in Bed Among The Lentils.

I was hopeful for Jodie Comer playing Lesley, but talented as she is, she's too young, beautiful fresh to be believable as washed up.

I thought the actress in The Outside Dog overacted.

I haven’t watched them yet. Pat Routledge can do no wrong in my eyes. I’ve just watched Miss Fozzard again just now.
The ‘woman of no importance’ monologue is a brilliant piece of acting too.

I've only watched the first 2 so far but looking forward to the rest. "Lady of Letters" was great - studied the script at school l think but never actually watched the original!
The Ordinary Woman one completely missed the mark for me - references to "we know what the trigger was" didn't seem to get resolved the way they usually do, or did i miss something?

I’ve just watched A Chip in the Sugar. Martin Freeman does an excellent Reece Shearsmith impression. That’s who they should have got to do it!

I have always been a fan but I don't like everything he does and find some of the words he uses are repeated a little too much from one piece of his work to another. 'Denizen' being one.

I am not a fan of the Les Dawson way some of his female characters speak. We are not like this !

Apart from that I enjoyed some of the new actors and not all in the way I enjoyed some of the old actors but not all.

I loved Rochenda Sandal in 'The Outside Dog'. I thought shades of The Yorkshire Ripper but I dislked Sarah lancashire in Just an ordinary Woman. Sometimes I think Bennett goes awry and his perception of human life is uncanny but also very OTT

Maureen Lipman would be great, I remember her doing a monologue years ago about seeing her lover off on a train going to fight in the war. It was so moving.

Kirsten Scott Thomas as the lady antique dealer was fab. She did the whole ' I'm so upset , but I'll keep a stiff upper lip about it all ' so well.
Especially as the man managed to dupe her with the tactics she first pointed out she was able to spot them doing to her originally!
I love these monologues: have a few more to see yet as well.

Report
Iamthewombat · 08/07/2020 13:19

Kristen Scott Thomas was good, agreed. I think she did that monologue better than Eileen Atkins in the original. I liked the smile she kept doing when she thought she’d got the better of somebody: really brought the character to life.

I preferred the Eileen Atkins version, personally. I thought she was funnier than KST and better bringing out the conniving nature of Celia.

Re the repeat of certain words - having watched them all, someone saying "whatnot", or "and whatnot" seems to be in every one?

Seems that way to me anyway.

I didn't know she hadn't been asked. Was that in an interview?
