Ros Myers - Spooks

Watching the series for the first time on iPlayer...and now at Series 9. Think Ros Myers is a superb character...so composed but compassionate. Such a strong female lead - fair, ruthless, always has a great response. Loved her fledgling romance with Adam. I am sorry I missed this the first time round....

I really loathed Ros at first but grew to like her. I never quite understood how someone who aided and abetted her traitorous father in an attempted coup was given a job but their recruiting procedures were a tad haphazard, to say the least.Grin

I originally only watched from series 7 so it's good to see it all from episode 1. I am currently near the end of series 9.

Yes I loved Ros. I think I might go back and rewatch some - do they feel dated now?

GrimDamnFanjo · 30/04/2020 17:04

I'm watching it too and up to series 8.
They don't half seem to have some odd recruitment practices.
No one does an induction or go to spy school either...
The composition of the cast is very formulaic too.
But despite that it's much better than a lot of the current output!

Similar themes but Ros really raised it to another level. Having said that, I started watching it (or thought I would give it a go) because of Keeley Hawes and Matthew McF. Am pleased they didn’t orchestrate a romance between them. I liked Adam Carter - more than I thought I would - and his exit was amazing. But I have really warmed to Ros. She is just how I would want to be. I loved how the role was written. So intelligent, witty/clever retorts.

From my reading around the series - apparently Peter Firth (who was Oscar nominated at one point in his career) who plays Harry used to get SACKfuls of fan mail. He reminds me of Ted Hastings in Line of Duty....

So much I didn't know and so much I had forgotten!

I knew about the fat fryer, remembering the hoohah at the time, but still found it shocking although not upsetting IYSWIM since we barely knew the character. So many other deaths were emotional for me, Adam Carter's was heartbreaking because of his little boy but seemed inevitable, just as Ros's did. Zaf's death for me was the worst because it was so horrible and took so long to find out the truth (and also because we know such things have happened in the Middle East.)

It was interesting to see Ruth's early years, before she stopped washing her hair Grinand I love Harry more than ever. I first saw Peter Firth about 40 years ago in "The Flipside of Dominick Hide" when we both young and skinny. Both he and Nicola Walker are fabulous actors and the relationship between Ruth and Harry is perfectly played.

I still love Richard Armitage although I found series 9's character development bizarre, and have also discovered that I really rather fancied Matthew McFadyen, despite him looking ridiculously young.

For anyone watching it again, do you see events or characters in a different light, is your favourite still your favourite?

And whatever happened to Harry's dog?

AZisgreat · 21/04/2021 18:25

I'm binge watching from the beginning and am now up to Series 8. I had never watched it before and I am absolutely loving it. I think it works because you care about most of the MI5 characters as they are fairly likeable; and they won't necessarily survive.
Whatever their salary is, it is not enough lol. Fun watching all the dated technology.
I didn't like Ros at first either but she has grown on me.
In connection with the UK coup, whatever happened to Harry's boss Julia as she was heavily involved on the wrong side but nothing seemed to happen to her as such, she was mentioned once by Harry in a subsequent episode (Julia would never plant bomb to harm UK) and then never seen again?
It's no doubt totally unrealistic...how come they never get proper medical attention after being in bomb blasts? They go straight back to work! It is a bit repetitive but surprising how many new angles they have come up with over 8 series. Bit irritating that the idea of ill-fated love interest between main MI5 male lead and blonde female CIA liaison office is being reprised.

I absolutely loved Ros, she absolutely knew how to kick ass! That era with Adam, Ros and Zaf was great.

I haven’t seen it since originally aired but distinctly remember not liking when the Richard Armitage character was brought in, the only thing which kept me watching to the end was Harry and Ruth.

It’s such an incredible show. We watched it for the first time last year and it’s stood the rest of time brilliantly. If it wasn’t for the ancient mobile phones and contemporary foreign affairs themes you wouldn’t know it was that old.

Ruth was one of my favourites.

When you’re done and need something to switch to, watch 24 if you haven’t already seen it. Stunning.

ChekhovsWorkshoppedShooter · 22/04/2021 00:05

I was obsessed with Ros in series 7 and 8. Her snarky dialogue was amazing and her plot line with Tobias Menzies was rivetting.

To this day I still wear a Nehru collared waist length jacket which doesn’t suit me at all but which I bought in a charity shop because it reminded me of her.

reprehensibleme · 22/04/2021 00:08

We came to it late and watched over the course of a year or so. Totally loved Ruth, Harry and Zaf. Roz was such a great character. I'm assuming the real spooks don't lose quite so many operatives?

I just loved Malcolm ❤️

PrincessScarlett · 22/04/2021 09:21

OMG! Loved Spooks so much. Been contemplating a rewatch for ages. All the female leads were fab. So many great plot twists and devastating deaths.

Loved Ruth, Jo, Malcolm, Harry and Lucas. That episode with Adam and Jo when they were captured and held hostage was heartbreaking.

Lucas was such a great character. Full of twists and turns and some very upsetting episodes in terms of characters' demises.

Ilovefluffysheep · 22/04/2021 11:12

We watched this recently, as my husband had never seen it, and I had watched every series and loved it. So much I had forgotten (although not the shocking deep fat fryer scene!). A brilliant programme, really miss it.

Watched the film recently, not a patch on the series.

rubyrose44 · 22/04/2021 12:13

I really like Roz too, and Harry and Ruth are just 💛😭 but my all time favourites are Malcolm and Colin! Especially fond of how Colin would go on holiday with his mate with the booze barge 😂

Hels20 · 22/04/2021 13:00

I loved Malcolm and Colin too - Colin’s demise was so sad. Made me cry.

It’s a great series and has aged really well. The chip fat scene was harrowing - but set the tone very early. No one was safe.
