Anyone watching the TV adaptation of Sally Rooney's 'Normal People' on iPlayer?

OP posts:
TokyoSushi · 29/04/2020 22:08

And now I've just finished episode 4, fabulous. I love Connell so far

Travelledtheworld · 29/04/2020 22:17

Connell isn't quite what I expected, but his gorgeous blue eyes....very Irish.

whatdoyoudonow · 29/04/2020 23:58

Book sold out on Amazon now!
Ordered from Waterstones but will have to wait a week. Can't wait to read it!

Lucylocket13 · 30/04/2020 08:39

Loved this series. If I liked this what else would I like?

Mawbags · 30/04/2020 08:48

I read the book when it was released, to be
Honest it just seemed like very navel gazing young adult fiction

The series is far better.

TokyoSushi · 30/04/2020 12:25

Now on episode 5 and actually sobbing in my (home) office 😭😭😭

Yankathebear · 30/04/2020 12:35

I watched 10 episodes yesterday! I don’t normally watch tv Grin

Ludo19 · 30/04/2020 12:47

I've binge watched the full series over two days. I found it very moving, such misunderstandings and misguidedness. Really felt for the characters. loved it tbh.

TokyoSushi · 30/04/2020 13:16

@Lucylocket13 have you watched Unorthodox on Netflix? It's not at all the same as this apart from being about a relationship between two young people. But that, and of course now Normal People are the two things that I have really, really loved during lockdown.

Travelledtheworld · 30/04/2020 21:51

I think it is exquisite. I am practically holding my breath reading it.
I wish I could live my life again and go back to my first love.

Karwomannghia · 30/04/2020 22:02

Loved it. Brilliant acting.
Don’t students drink wine and smoke anymore then? Also want to read the book.

babycornplease · 30/04/2020 22:02

I've got as far as the prom episode... Where he rings her telling her he loves her and she's asleep...
I've had to turn it off... I can't take the emotion!!! I probably sound very silly, but it's bringing all the teen angst back... I am on the wrong side of 30 and I just feel so so so bad for Marianne...
It gets better right?

TokyoSushi · 30/04/2020 22:18

I've completed the whole thing now after starting about 7pm yesterday. I've basically spent the whole day crying, but I've absolutely loved it.

LaureBerthaud · 30/04/2020 22:26

The nudity and sex scenes became gratuitous.
And as for the ending
SPOILER ALERT

Don't they have creative writing courses in Dublin that Connell could have done? He'll be bloody miserable in NYC and God knows who Maryanne will hook up with now.

LaureBerthaud · 30/04/2020 22:35

@babycornplease - it gets very grim in parts.

another SPOILER alert

A couple of unpleasant BDSM scenes
And lots of misery

Bottomplasters · 01/05/2020 06:48

I'm loving this!!

whatdoyoudonow · 01/05/2020 07:00

There is one episode I wouldn't re-watch. The one where she is abroad with the 'boyfriend' .

Ispini · 01/05/2020 07:09

Students in Ireland tend to dress a bit more ‘hipsterish’ if that’s a word! It was spot on in my opinion. The whole series just brought me back to the good old days. No kid, no wrinkles!

Ispini · 01/05/2020 07:12

Sorry thought I was replying to a post on the last page! Totally loved it but found it frustrating it took them so long to get together and then he fecks off to NY!
I never thought a GAA football player could be soooooo sexy. Will definitely read her books now.

Bottomplasters · 01/05/2020 10:33

I'm sure I read Marianne is English, I thought her accent was amazing did you?

IndigoApple · 01/05/2020 11:35

@Ispini thanks for responding about clothes. DD at uni in Scotland and students seem to live in gym type stuff - leggings and fleeces. During the day anyway. They also more likely to be drinking things like gin, Kopaberg cider or Jaegarbombs (no idea if last 2 spelt right!) and she hardly knows anyone that smokes.

She still enjoyed it though and I've just ordered her the book in Amazon! Bet I read it first! 😁

LaureBerthaud · 01/05/2020 11:42

I had to put subtitles on a few times when Connell was mumbling.

Thesearmsofmine · 01/05/2020 11:43

We binged watched he whole series, I loved it and the ending reminded me of my own ex bf telling me to move away to uni instead of staying nearby for him(which 15 years on I am thankful for).

thismushroom · 01/05/2020 11:54

I read the book. It's not normally something I would but there was some hype around it and I was curious. It was lovely to read, in terms of its style and simplicity. This all seems quite lost in the series though. Simple in terms of language when reading is one thing. Less said, richer meaning etc. It seems like to recreate this they've gone with a near empty dialogue, lots of neck shots and close up of faces - it does not create the same effect. Here meaning is very subjective, you see what you think you see, and we are not learning anything about the characters.
I don't think narration would be a good thing, but there is so much internal thought, especially with Connell. Whilst watching we know none of it really and it means we move from scene to scene without really knowing what anyone is thinking. Still very watchable though, (if a bit too much female nudity than necessary). As the author also wrote the screenplay (I think that's right?) then it must be what she wanted and imagined it would be.

covetingthepreciousthings · 01/05/2020 13:18

Yes Daisy Edgar-Jones is English , I heard her speak the other day on her Insta. Her accent in this is lovely.

I love all the Irish accents, Connell's is lovely.
