seriously. i'm watching it now for work and it is terribly upsetting. Claire Verity says 'i'm a bitch, i'm mean to them but it works', no touching, no eye contact, lots of talking about 'baby', presumably because she can't be arsed remembering the name... oh it's AWFUL.

good on the social baby people - they're really making their point about her damaging methods. With research based evidence. Where's CV's I wonder?

Aitch · 20/09/2007 20:43

hey smc, best not say cretin, though, it's a bit of a dubious term in fact. but she certainly has a face like a skelped erse!

OP posts:
barbamama · 20/09/2007 20:46

is anyone else getting a sense of deja-vu?

Aitch · 20/09/2007 20:54

barba, any judge in the land would agree about her face.

From the Times article, some sensible woman called Dreena will also feature in this programme.

"Somewhere in the middle is Dreena Hamilton, 58, mother of three, grandmother to five and herself the product of a super-strict Truby King-style upbringing. Perhaps because of this, she is a passionate believer in the wisdom of Dr Benjamin Spock, whose book Baby and Child Care, with its overriding philosophy of love and understanding, shaped childhoods in the 1960s. She believes that all babies are individuals and that highly prescriptive methods are therefore misguided. Instead, mother and baby should learn from each other, doing whatever seems right at the time."

Here, here Dreena!

But wait, also in the article Miss Verity states..."Well, I always say: does a heart surgeon have to operate on himself?? Um, was that not what someone else said too? What is it they have against heart surgeons? Is it because they have no heart themselves?

Comparing heart surgery to child care says all you need to know about her really. God help anyone who listens.

TwoIfBySea · 20/09/2007 21:42

Just to add, those of us who watched Bulgaria's Abandoned Children saw exactly what happens when a baby is starved of touch and love. That is perhaps an extreme example but it is true.

Ridiculous woman. Shouldn't be left in charge of a Tiny Tears let alone a real baby. Why do these "gurus" hate babies so much?

northender · 20/09/2007 21:51

I'm sure I remember from a previous thread about CV that even Gina criticised at least part of her regime. (that thread followed an interview with CV in the Sun).
She is lower than low as is this programme as far as I'm concerned. So many people feel desperate about the lack of control in those first few months ther are plenty who will latch on to this kind of thing.

Hi kiskidee!

Aitch · 20/09/2007 22:22

twoif, the other woman seems lovely as well, it's just CV. i was telling my boss the other day that the programme is equally weighted in the manner that X Factor is. Sharron, louis, dannii and simon may get equal face time but it's always clear who the star is. this show is like that, you don't really hear what the others are saying cos you're still reeling from CV's latest outrage. (didn't watch the orphanages prog, just didn't have the strength that night...)

MadamePlatypus · 21/09/2007 08:09

Surely CV is just a rather dim woman who can't sing well enough to get famous by going on X factor. If she wasn't given publicity none of us would have heard of her.

Isn't the problem the production company, Silver River (headed by Daisy Goodwin?). They obviously wanted Gina Ford, who wouldn't (to give her credit) have touched them with a barge pole, so they just scratched around to get anybody.

Here is my new programme for them:

"Hello Matron!" Hospitals seemed so much nicer when Kenneth Williams and Hattie Jacques were in charge - we kidnapped a ward of NHS patients and with in depth advice from the chair of the "Carry On" appreciation club and using the techniques of 50 years ago, tried to find out if we could a ratings winner!

MadamePlatypus · 21/09/2007 08:11

"could create a ratings winner"

MadamePlatypus · 21/09/2007 08:14

The other thing that is nuts about this programme is how are they defining whether one system "works" better than another.

Its as though being a mother can be reduced to how much you can get your child to sleep. Why not just keep them all tranqed up until they are adults and have done with it?

(sorry for all these repeat posts)

Theclosetpagan · 21/09/2007 08:14

I still get the Community Practitioner journal (HV and School Nurse journal) and you should see the anger from the editor in there (about CV in particular).
Given what we know about the development of the brain during the first two years of life and the vital importance of affection in that development then CV's appraoch is tantamount to child abuse. The woman needs to be taken out and shot.
Anyone who doubts this needs to read "Why Love Matters" by Sue Gerhardt - evidently CV never has but the research pulled to gether shows that CV's approach is actually damaging.

kiskidee · 21/09/2007 20:35

hi northender.

[snicker]

mummytosophie · 22/09/2007 20:26

Just noticed this thread . I am very concerned as a mother and a health care worker that these methods are being aired on tv. Babies who do not receive cuddles and love can be affected for the rest of thier lives . Also to leave a baby crying is an incredibly stressful and heartbreaking thing to do , also as already mentioned possibly dangerous .I could go on forever about this . Probably should watch show to make a more informed comment but may be to upsetting !

Aitch · 22/09/2007 21:51

oh-hoooh. am watching the second show. truly CV is an unpleasant piece of work.

www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/femail/article.html?in_article_id=482838&in_page_id=1879

"the theory behind it is that babies don't need cuddles or hugs". ???????? How on earth could anybody seriously write that sentence?

Aitch · 23/09/2007 20:17

rani, like many mothers, has become conveniently amnesiac about the first three months of parenthood...

LadyTophamHatt · 23/09/2007 20:31

I can honestly say I am dreading tjis programme.
I wantto watch it but I know I'll feel ike puuting my boot through the screen....

hatjam · 25/09/2007 16:53

what production company made this? it sounds crazy irresponsible to be showing what's basically neglect verging on abuse and presenting it as a viable parenting choice.

callmeovercautious · 25/09/2007 17:45

Bump to remind us all it is on tonight, car crash tv I suspect!

nurseyemma · 25/09/2007 18:07

I'm intrigued about this programme but also concerned about the stress inducing effect it will have on my mental state. I've just read the daily Mail and Times reviews.

A positive outcome is that any parent or parent to be will hopefully be wholly put off the militarian routine b**x when they see how cruel it can be. Have never heard of her but she sounds more extreme than GF! I re-iterate the pagans adivce to read "WHy Love Matters" as do many of my colleagues in child mental health.

What is a "maternity nurse" way and what supposed expertise does it give you? I've worked closely with nurse/midwifery and HV education for 10 years and I've never heard of a course in "maternity nursing", it has no professional status as far as I'm aware and is a tenuous term these so calles "guru" types bandy about to justify their non evidence based horrible "methods".

Sorry long post rant over.
