Cheers Jamie. And Jools. (And the crew the first week)

I am currently living with 3 adult family members. Fussy ones. I’m a fairly experimental cook anyway but with locust shopping going on near me still, your programmes have given me inspiration to help me cater for them.

Thank you Smile

Two years ago Jack Monroe decided she was transgender so actually a man. And then wait no she isn’t she’s a woman again. Or no gender so still not a woman.
So not sure why all this sexist rubbish about not wanting a man to do it is flying around. Female chefs have been on telly for years too and just as successful.
JO is mildly annoying but no way as annoying as JM and her gender hopping olympics.
He’s also professionally trained and a tv personality. Why on earth wouldn’t Ch4 want him for this job...

Wolfiefan · 07/04/2020 13:20

I’ve been enjoying the Jamie Oliver isolation cooking show.
I don’t have all those exact ingredients but it’s given me ideas. I am not shopping at the moment. DH is and it’s like ready steady cook trying to cobble something together with what he has managed to get. So ideas are welcome!

Thesearmsofmine · 07/04/2020 13:21

Why is Jamie wrong to do a show about cooking using basic ingredients? Surely an experienced chef is actually the best choice to produce tasty food with just the basics? Plus he is experienced on TV. His meals look like they taste good and are things my family would eat and enjoy. As I have said I’m not a fan of his usually but I think he doing a cool job. He is also able to do it from his home with no crew, would Jack have done that? The same woman who won’t film YouTube videos because she is too timid.

I am surprised the BBC agreed to work with Jack/Melissa, although perhaps as she regularly deletes her tweets(after they have the desired effect) they are unaware of how unprofessional she is.

Deathraystare · 07/04/2020 13:58

Jack Monroe has her own show on BBC starting shortly. Weekday mornings I think, full details on her website.

I will look forward to it! Love her recipes!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 07/04/2020 15:29

Jamie has the capacity to churn out a show quickly and to a good quality. He is a more well known name to pull in viewers.

PigInASlanket · 07/04/2020 15:45

I like the premise of the JO programme, given the money he's made from recipe books it's amusing to see him saying that so much can be adapted for personal preference Grin

Can't get on with JM - pretty sure her household income is much higher than most of her followers yet still asks for their cash in donations. In the current climate I find that a bit morally wonky.

Housewife2010 · 11/04/2020 09:32

We're really enjoying it. We've just watched the Petal's birthday cake episode. They seem like a lovely family and Jamie is doing a fantastic job.

lynsey91 · 11/04/2020 11:42

I am enjoying his show. So far I have made the veggie chilli, the flapjack biscuit, the sausage, beans and bread bake and the pizza.

I am going to make pasta this week just because he made it look so easy and also the rosti and poached eggs.

I think his recipes are good and have had a lot of the ingredients he uses or certainly the ones he suggests substituting things with. Not meat or fish though as we are veggie.

I would not watch JM as I don't like her much. She seems to have a serious attitude problem

Whitney168 · 12/04/2020 16:50

Not sure why this show is being linked with Jack Monroe and budget cooking, surely it’s meant to be about cooking with what you can ge5 hold of and substituting what you can’t?

Anyway, the corner shop chicken curry from this show is fabulous!

Housewife2010 · 12/04/2020 18:41

It's linked because Jack sent a furious tweet when Jamie's show was announced as she thought she should present it. He's doing a great job.

AwrightDoreenTakeAFuckinDayOff · 12/04/2020 18:52

Well I’ll be keeping on watching Jamie. I like what he is doing. I won’t be watching the other side.

And they can send all the indignant tweets they like about that. It isn’t going to make me want to watch them.

Sorry, yes, saw that and realise she thinks she’s missed out. Just not sure why anyone else feels she’s right, when that doesn’t seem to be the message of the show at all.

(Also like Jamie.)

AwrightDoreenTakeAFuckinDayOff · 14/04/2020 13:05

As I put on the t’other thread

Jamie - 1 JM - 0

not a surprise

I have enjoyed JO's show. Though I had a little giggle when he said he hadn't got certain veg (being like us) . I know he has a kitchen garden so must have something out there!

I have picked up some tips too from him (though whether I will remember them or not is anyone's guess.

I did watch JM yesterday (I forgot she was on). I do like her recipes and liked her books but am not on social media so missed any spats.

Who I really like are the Hairy Bikers. They do seem to be genuinely lovely blokes. Someone who met them said they were too! I love their enthusiasm over food. I have also enjoyed Ainsley Harriott- both his Caribbean and Med series.

I know this isn't budget cooking, but some still is still within our means. I also don't mind Nigella.

Ok it is a fair point that this is not budget/whatever you have in your cupboard but there is a place for it as well.

After all, at the time of Elizabeth David's writings, the only olive oil we knew about in UK was the stuff from the chemist! During the rationing years she wrote about food from the Mediterranean which was so far removed from what the UK was used to.

KaronAVyrus · 16/04/2020 10:40

I’m quite enjoying the new JO show and I don’t normally like him. But he’s a trained chef who has been on the TV for years and has managed to churn a new programme out very quickly.
I haven’t seen JM’s show yet as I don’t normally out the TV on so early. Is it any good?

AwrightDoreenTakeAFuckinDayOff · 16/04/2020 11:31

Still loving JO.

In the interest of fairness I have watched a couple of days of JM.

In answer to your question @KaronAVyrus - no. Grin

OP posts:
KaronAVyrus · 16/04/2020 11:45

Oh dear. Might be a case of careful what you wish for. Grin.

HarrietTheShy · 17/04/2020 13:17

Loving it. I have a very modest store cupboard and I could make 80% of what he's shown on the show. That stuffed naan bread? OMG. Shock

JM is not anywhere near his league.

AwrightDoreenTakeAFuckinDayOff · 17/04/2020 16:13

Still bloody loving it.

I’m not Jools by the way. I’m half her height and no doubt four times her weight and I’m unable to hold a steady camera hand for long. If at all! Grin

Thank you. My family are eating well, food is being used and never wasted and I am mixing ingredients in and out and it is working. My folks are happy. Which makes me happy. I know they are getting lovely nutritious meals and I’ve lost a little podge to boot. We are full of lovely veg and we are healthy, despite them being confined to their house and garden.

I can go to work knowing they are good.

It’s been the bollux.

Keep on cooking on matey. And cheers. SmileFlowers

Can you please link the stuffed naan bread?

KaronAVyrus · 17/04/2020 16:29

The stuffed bash bread did look nice. Sorry don’t have the recipe.

Caught a bit of JM this morning and she was very average. (And that’s me being kind) Maybe she will improve but at the moment she wouldn’t be able to carry a show by herself.

Spam88 · 17/04/2020 16:58

It's so ridiculous to suggest JO should have deferred this show to JM 😂 he has yeeeaaars oh experoence as a chef and TV chef, and a huge repertoire at his disposal that he can adapt for the premise of the show.

I've watched the first few episodes and am really enjoying it. I bought his Ministry of Food recipe fairly recently and this show is in a similar vein to that I think - wanting to show people the basics, that they can then build upon or adapt as they want. He's passionate and makes things really easy, can't say if have watched JM 🤷‍♀️

I've never made bread before but he made it look so simple I gave it a go and was so proud of myself 😂 going to give his twister bread a go this week as well, and have also put his risotto on the menu. And bought frozen green beans!

petalpower · 17/04/2020 17:30

I think tonight might be the last programme. Looks like Kirstie Allsop is on in this slot from next Monday.

HarrietTheShy · 17/04/2020 17:48

Stuffed naan (second recipe).

HarrietTheShy · 17/04/2020 17:53

If you want to watch the stuffed naan recipe, he does it in the first 10 minutes of yesterday's (Thursday) show. It should be on the Channel 4 app.
