The National Theatre production. James Corden on stage at his best! We saw the original in London. The funniest play ever. Don’t miss it.

I saw this production on stage too. I'm not a special fan of slapstick either but I thought it was very well done - highly enjoyable on stage, amusing and diverting online. Yes it's a bit of fluff, but better than a lot of the BBC / ITV output at the moment.

Prefer drama, miss the theatre. Will appreciate it all the more in future.

JellyfishandShells · 03/04/2020 07:49

I saw it last year streamed to a large cinema screen - it really worked well there, not quite as good as live but still effective. Watched a bit on my iPad and I can see why some might be disappointed.

James Corden was extraordinarily good in it.

Thanks for the Joseph details!

Egghead68, yes - Cyprus Avenue worked really well on screen.

Heigh-ho - in the temporary absence of the Friday evening Archers broadcast it's good to know there's always something available elsewhere. Really must put all the various theatres' online offerings into my calendar.

I enjoyed it once I got into it.
I am loving Stephen Rea egghead thank you

Live NT screenings at cinemas work really well.

To a TV or laptop - not so good.

AllTheseThingsThatIHaveNotDone · 03/04/2020 10:21

Fuuuuccccckkkk. Just finished Cyprus Avenue. Shock

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 03/04/2020 10:22

Shhhh!

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 03/04/2020 10:29

Cyprus Avenue made me realise how much the visual noise of a TV scene diminishes our ... receptivity. We're so used to seeing certain things through the naturalistic prism of screen drama.

On a stage where everything is stark, focused, non-naturalistic - what we see is so much more powerful.

(Look, no spoilers!)

Xiaoxiong · 03/04/2020 10:36

Hmm, maybe I enjoyed it more because we have rigged up a home cinema with an old office projector and some speakers we had hanging around, and had wine and popcorn while we watched to make it an event. Lots of ugly wires but it feels a tiny bit more like being in a theatre than watching it on my iPhone or laptop.

The kids watched a few scenes with us, they were absolutely speechless with laughter at the slapstick (though we did have to have a discussion afterwards about language that only adults are allowed to use!!) so hopefully it sparks an interest in theatre.

We donated to the NT on the website afterwards as well, hope they stay afloat.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 03/04/2020 10:48

I rather enjoyed it and donated afterwards.

lynsey91 · 03/04/2020 12:00

I am not usually keen on slapstick but, as I said before, loved this show.

I thought James Cordon was very very good in it and I really don't get the hate for him

BubblesBuddy · 03/04/2020 14:33

I think if you don’t like a personality or actor it seems a bit daft to spend a couple of hours watching them! I think this set up JC and in the theatre it felt very much that he was in tune with the audience.

I noticed that Cal McCrystal was involved with this. He directs Giffords Circus and I’m really going to miss them this summer if we cannot restart gatherings. All my fun things are cancelled!

Yes Wild was good too. I had seen it live but it definitely stood up to a second viewing. I had less emotional response watching it on screen but this may have been because I’d seen it before.
